Work Text:

When it came to things, Tsukasa was always curious about them. It could be the most dangerous things ever and he'll still want to investigate and see what happens! A snake he found lying on the side of the stable that was in town, going up to investigate, he got bit.

("You're an idiot." Nene muttered, annoyance evident in her voice.

"It looked hurt! I thought it was dying! I wanted to bring it somewhere so I can give it water. You know how hot it gets sometimes!" Tsukasa explained, as Nene was patching up his bite he got on his hand. She gave him the most annoyed expression she could possibly muster. She got worried Tsukasa got badly injured. He turned out to be okay, it wasn't venomous! Yay!)

He once saw a stupid looking cactus, so he departed from Rui and went up to get a closer look at it because he found it funny. His horse ended up getting startled by something moving by it's feet, panicking and moving quickly. Tsukasa got knocked off... I'm sure you know where this is going.

Let's just say Tsukasa had a lot of cactus spines in him. It was very painful.

But, Tsukasa's stupid mishaps with his dying curiosity is not important! This isn't the main focus here! The main focus was actually his partner (romantic, and in crime), Rui Kamishiro.

His outfit was... unique. He wore this big trench coat (which was bad because it was always hot where they lived. Tsukasa has scolded him about this many times, but he hasn't bothered to change it.), a bandana around his neck that was covering the lower part of his face most of the time. He looked... very suspicious at first glance. Which he is, by the way. Mysterious, even.

(He was always the talk of the town. Everyone always talks about how he's so suspicious and means no good, mostly here to cause trouble and ruin their peace. They never  shut up about him.)

(His boyfriend's famous!!)

But, the most important part of his outfit was this big hat always rested on his head. It was always tilted to the right side of his head and covered part of his eye.

This small detail about his outfit always made Tsukasa curious. He wanted to know exactly why Rui wore his hat like that, and why it was always covering his eye.

So, that leads us here! Tsukasa and Rui getting up to their usual shenanigans... or well, not really this time. They were doing something else more tame. Sad! Well, their stupid adventures are a story for another time.

Tsukasa and Rui were putting their horses away after coming back to town, they just got done doing something super-duper important (it was not important).

It wasn't until they we're putting their horses back in their stable when Tsukasa felt his curiosity get the best of him, so he spoke up and asked the question he was dying to be answered.

"Hey, Rui?" Tsukasa called out to the other, leaning on the fence to the side of Rui, looking at him with his eyes filled with curiosity. "I have something to ask you."

Rui glanced over at Tsukasa, raising an eyebrow at him to signal him to ask his question as he was still giving pets and rubs to his horse, Bingus.

"Yes, Tsukasa? What d'you wanna know?" Rui asked, with a cat-like smile on his face.

Tsukasa stared at Rui for a second, furrowing his eyebrows. "Rui, please stop with the fake accent. I've told you many times that it—" He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose and shook his head, giving Rui a small glare. The glare only influenced Rui's grin to widen.

"Nevermind, nevermind. You're distracting me." Tsukasa said, waving his hand in the air. "I want to ask about your hat. I want to know why it's always covering your eye. Sorry if this is a question that you don't want to answer, but my curiosity... it's dying. Do you have some story behind it? Or a reason?"

Rui's eyebrows raised a bit, not expecting to be asked about his hat of all things. He thought it would of been something important and serious.

"Well, there is a reason why I wear it like that!" Rui said, nodding his head.

Rui's reply only made Tsukasa more excited to hear the answer. He started to think about cool backstories that could be lying behind it. An epic stand-off he had with someone! He nodded his head excitedly as he thought to himself about all the possible outcomes. He could write a story about this! The townsfolk loved his stories! Aside from being the town's sheriff, he also wrote stories for fun and sharing them around.

Rui noticed Tsukasa's behavior and laughed quietly to himself. "Do you really want to know? It's truly... gnarly and scary." Rui said, giving Tsukasa a wide grin.

Tsukasa snapped out of his thoughts and looked at Rui, excitedly nodding his head.

"Well, the reason why I wear my hat like this... " Rui said, slowly, dancing around the topic and making it more suspenseful for Tsukasa.

Typical Rui behavior.

"Is because I just want to appear mysterious!" Rui said, throwing his hands in the air slightly and doing small jazz hands. Yeah, spoiler alert, he was lying about it being scary. He just wanted to be dramatic.

Tsukasa stopped his nodding, and stared at Rui. His grin slowly morphed into a frown, clearly being disappointed by the answer he got. His arms that were slowly pumping in the air in excitement quickly dropped back down to his sides.

"You— You mean the only  reason you wear your hat like that is to appear mysterious?" Tsukasa asked, disappointment laced in his voice. "I thought there would be a cool reason for it! Like you were in a stand-off! Or you lost your eye in some gruesome battle!" He yelled out, waving his arms in the air.

Rui laughed again. "No, no! It's just to be mysterious! Look, my eyes completely normal!" He said, giggling to himself.

He took off his hat and pointed at his normal looking  eye. No scar. No injury. Nothing. It was just a normal eye.

"It adds character, doesn't it?" Rui asked, still grinning.

Tsukasa blinked, his mouth going into a straight line. "I mean... yeah. I guess it adds character. It suits you!"

To say the least, Tsukasa never thought he would be so disappointed by a hat, but look at where he is now. He's still upset by it to this day.
