The Disastrous Life of Nene K

Summary:

Kusanagi Nene is your average high school girl…isn’t she?

Well, no, to give you a short answer. She’s a psychic. The supernatural kind, the abnormal kind.

And as a psychic, she has quite a few interesting adventures in her life.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Chapter 1: the adventures begin (theyre already terrible for nene)

Chapter Text

With powers, the impossible is the new possible.

My name is Kusanagi Nene.

I have psychic powers.

But because my abilities are so powerful, it is difficult for me to control them, and so I’m stuck wearing controller devices on my head.

Sixteen years ago, a normal, happy, sappy married couple had a abnormal baby girl. At fourteen days, I was able to talk silently in full sentences. At a month, I could walk. In the air. And finally, at a year, I was able to go to the market and back—using teleportation.

So, after fifteen years, I am where I am now. A first-year in high school.

So, my life must be perfect because of my power, right?

That’s more wrong than flat earthers! I’m an unhappy girl with nothing!

Telekinesis, telepathy, X-ray vision, teleportation, invisibility…blah, blah, blah.

It doesn’t matter to me, because I’ve lacked a normal life during all of my sixteen years. For example, the excitement of any surprise. It’s an unknown feeling to me, unlike the average person.

I don’t get angry or sad I guess, but I don’t get happy, either. That’s the story of my life. On the bright side, I don’t have to deal with drama.

By the way, remember my parents being sappy? Yeah, no, that’s changed. They’re not divorced or anything, but they’re not exactly lovey-dovey anymore.

“Nene, are your pork cutlets good?” Mom asks. Dad protests, looking at his shoe covered in sauce that Mom had given him for food.

For a while now, they’ve argued like this.

“Hey…Nene…can’t you do me a favor and turn the shoe into steak?” Dad asks.

The guy that is my dad, Kusanagi Yasahiro, a pathetic, lazy, irresponsible excuse of an adult. He’ll give me his chores with the excuse that my abilities can get it done faster. I’ve learned to turn him down with the cold shoulder, because otherwise he’ll get spoiled.

But he’s whining like a baby, and it’s annoying…

“Nene, keep in mind what I’ve always told you, okay? Don’t use your powers for evil, only to reward or help others…”

My mom, Ayame Kusanagi, is loving and gentle. If I’ve ever thought about turning to the dark side, she’s stopped me. But…she herself has a dark side.

“…But, please, if you want, you’re more than welcome to use them to punish your father.”

Mom catches Dad eating Nene’s food, unfortunately for him.

“Don’t you dare eat Nene’s pork, you son of a bitch.”

I could stop them at any moment, but I think I should take the role of the adult here and let them solve this on their own.

—— ☆——

Kamiyama High School. 732 students in total, and yet none have caught onto my powers. It’s easy to keep it that way when there’s not a single person that I can’t read telepathically within a 200 meter radius.

“Heyheyheyhey Nene-chan!!!”

Ootori Emu. She has good intentions, but she’s painfully loud and energetic. Most people find some reason to be friends with her, whether it be her friendly energy or understanding personality. For whatever reason, she’s taken a liking to me.

“Whatcha doing? Has it been a wondahoi morning for you???? Me and Tsukasa-kun came to see you since you were eating lunch alone again! Not that it’s bad or anything, but you look so lonely, when you have friends already!” Emu pouts, gesturing to Tsukasa and herself.

Tenma Tsukasa. A guy, who, despite being quite cringy in Nene’s eyes, is liked by every girl in school. And he’s not oblivious to it, either. He’s stuck-up, but not in the “you suck” way, more…”I’m better than everyone here and I’m glad you all can recognize it” way. He’s seen as “perfect”, but it’s tough to call him perfect when all I see is meat and bones and such—plus, he isn’t that flawless on the inside.

Tsukasa speaks up. “Yeah, Nene…you know, we can come to you for lunch everyday so you’re not alone!” Please don’t.

Nene looks up at them finally, which the pair take as a “yes”, unfortunately for the grayish-green-haired psychic.

“Yeahyeahyeah!!! Let’s do that!! Nene-chan, I’ll meet you on the rooftop everyday for lunch!” Emu smiles brightly, already excited to be spending lunch with Nene and Tsukasa.

“I’ll come along as well!!! HAHAHA!!!” Tsukasa announces, leaving Nene with her usual blank expression and Emu with a noticeable blush.

I’d turn them down, but their thoughtfulness is tempting, I guess. Plus, Tsukasa’s fangirls would go out on me if I left him feeling disappointed. Actually, I wonder why he’s taken a liking to me at all, being perceived as a perfect angel and all.

Nene nods and Tsukasa and Emu smile bigger. “Alright, it’s a deal then!”

Damn. Now, I’m stuck with these goofball idiots every lunch. An attention seeker who craves and is given praise constantly and a ball of energy. Some peace and quiet every now and then would be nice, but like they say, you get nothing out of crying over spilled milk.

——☆——

And so I find myself sitting with Emu and Tsukasa during the next day’s lunch.. Two of the most popular first-years, and in Tsukasa’s case, in Kamiyama. Damn it.

Here’s one thing about me: I hate attention. Here’s one thing about Emu and Tsukasa: they attract attention. Like, a lot.

Nene gets curious, confused, and even some jealous stares from the people around.

The antisocial psychic shrinks down as Emu and Tsukasa talk to each other, Tsukasa charming Emu naturally and Emu blushing as any normal girl would.

Neither acknowledged Nene until she made the mistake of shifting ever so slightly and reminding them of her presence.

“Nene-chan!!! Did you know that I heard a transfer student is joining class 1-C?” Emu awkwardly tries to get Nene to join she and Tsukasa’s conversation, to which in response Nene nods.

“Yeah, I heard from someone he isn’t all that liked, poor guy!! I mean, there must be a reason, but to get bullied throughout elementary to middle school would have to suck,” Tsukasa says, trying to sympathize with the unknown transfer student.

His background sounds strangely familiar…

“Awweee!! I hope he gets treated better this year!!!!” Emu pouts, earning a nod from the other two. Tsukasa glances at Nene, noticing that she hasn’t shown too much interest in the duplet in front of her.

TT: Nene hasn’t shown any interest in me—ever!!! This has never happened beforeeee!!! She will soon!!! I’m sure of it!!! I just need to try a bit harder to charm her!!! HAHAHA!!!!

“Yeah! Nene, how do you feel about it? I’d like to know…” Tsukasa asks, smiling as charmingly as he can at the grayish-green-haired diva by him.

Nene shrugs. Maybe…don’t get into strangers backstories? How did you even find out he was bullied throughout all of middle school and elementary? How nosy do you have to be? She internally sighs.

“Well…it makes sense that you wouldn’t have much an opinion on it, Nene-chan!!!” Emu smiles, as if she thought Nene was some “quiet kid” with no thoughts other than loneliness. Seriously, they must have painted her to be some pathetic, lonely girl in their heads…

Just as Nene was about to finally eat her grapefruit jelly, the bell rings to call the trio back into class. Grumbling internally, Nene takes a singular bite of the grapefruit jelly before packing up to get back to class.
