Chapter 1: The One With the Kiss

Chapter Text

Something about Caitlyn had always irked Violet. Whether that be the blue hair, the stupid sound of her stupid voice, or the way her eyes so easily trap the person she looks at, Vi would never be able to tell. Sure, it could be all of them at once, but admitting to giving that much thought to someone she hated was deeply embarrassing for her.

And yet, here she was, stuck with a stupid girl from a world above in Vi’s world below. Stuck with nowhere to go. Without her sister, Powder, without a hope in the world. “Hopeless.” She muttered, “this is hopeless. And it’s all your fault!” This brought Caitlyn to attention. She scoffed, shuffling to stand.

“My fault? How could this be my fault Violet?” The full name stung in many ways. Caitlyn stood up all the way, looking down at Vi. “Please, enlighten me.” Crossing her arms, she waited for the pink haired girl’s response. When no response came, her eyes widened, pleading for an answer.

“I…” Vi started, trying to keep her eyes from darting about; the eye contact felt like the only control she had over her situation. She’d gotten herself to a point at which there had to be more to say. And suddenly, she couldn’t think of any of it at all. “I don’t know. But I do know that I can blame all of it on you!”

Caitlyn untensed her body and turned away. “You came in too strong with all your important police talk before I could even understand what was happening with my sister. She was trying to talk to me and you just—just ruined all of it!”

But that…that wasn’t entirely true. Vi had told her to come in guns ablaze at the first sign of trouble. There had been numerous signs from Caitlyn’s point of view, from the shrill shrieks and random explosions she picked up on, hiding in the shadows during Vi’s encounter with her sister. Not to mention the overall uneasiness in Vi’s voice when speaking to her sister. Sure, maybe the sign of trouble wasn’t real, but both of them should have taken into account what the other believed a sign of trouble to be.

All this to say, no, it was not all Caitlyn’s fault. Coming to that conclusion herself, she turned back around and looked at Vi, with a newfound fire in her eyes. “No, I didn’t ruin all of it, Violet.” Vi scoffed and crossed her arms.

“Yes, you di—.”

“No. You just hate that you have to take the blame for it too, hm? You hate that because it’s so much easier to just blame another person. Especially if you hate that person, right? You just hate that you have to share the blame with me. A Piltover enforcer in training. A girl with a stupid voice who doesn’t know a thing about you and who you are and what kind of world you live in. Everything you’ve ever hated just shoved into one person and you are stuck with them. Stuck here in this place, with this person, with ideas that’ll lead to nowhere while you’re stuck the middle of a bloody void! Doesn’t that just drive you mad?” Caitlyn could tell she’d hit a nerve, and she could also tell both of them knew she was right.

Because she was. Vi hated everything Caitlyn stood for, everything she was and that hatred might as well be eating her alive. But at this current moment, the thing she hated most of all, was the fact she knew she had blame to share. If not from the past moments, from before any of this began. From the first shout she uttered at her sister that night. From the moment she believed it okay to leave Powder behind.

“But I imagine, there are plenty of other things you hate, right? Like when I touch you, it’s like a fire ignites on your arm.” Caitlyn took a step towards Vi, who stepped back, startled by a voice outside of her own head. “Or when you look into my eyes, you can feel your mind burst into flames.” Another step forward, and another step back. Caitlyn tilts her head and bites her lip. “But something I think you’d especially hate…” A step forward, with no room to take a step back. Vi had arrived at a wall and her back pressed against it. She was stuck in this confrontation. “Is if I kissed you.” Caitlyn whispered, impossibly close to Vi’s lips. She retracted herself a bit farther away from her face, but not too far. Far enough that Caitlyn could still notice the small shuddered breath Vi let out.

“What?” The words barely left Vi’s mouth with any audible sound.

“You’d hate it if I kissed you, wouldn’t you? You’d hate the feeling of everything you hate with her lips against your own, wouldn’t you? The very idea should disgust you, shouldn’t it?” Caitlyn was looking dead into Vi’s soul with a hint of a smile on her lips. Vi couldn’t decide if she could look anywhere. “And yet…here you are.” It felt like Caitlyn’s hand had suddenly appeared upon Vi’s jaw, lightly tracing the edges of her face. Her eyes were wide with anticipation and surprise and shock and confusion and a whirlwind of emotions and feelings. Tingles in her face and her spine. None of this made sense. Everything Caitlyn was saying was true, so…so why did it seem so incorrect at this moment?

Why couldn’t Vi bring herself to agree? Why didn’t the mind truly connect with what the words were saying?

“You’d truly hate it if I kissed you, wouldn’t you?” Caitlyn said, barely above a whisper. Her hand had cupped the bottom of Vi’s chin, ever so slightly pushing her head up.

And Vi was letting this happen. Why was she letting this stupid girl control her? Her body, her voice, her thoughts, her mind.

Because she wouldn’t hate it, actually.

And she didn’t. Vi did not hate when Caitlyn’s lips connected with her own. She didn’t hate the feeling of the Piltover girl’s hands rubbing her neck. She didn’t hate when the kiss deepened.

If anything? The thing she hated most was when Caitlyn pulled away. Suddenly, she hated that humans had to breathe and she couldn’t just kiss the stupid Piltover girl forever. She hated how her skin felt cold once Caitlyn pulled away.

Vi hated how easily swayed she could be about the embodiment of everything she hated by a stupid kiss.

One that made her hate the fact that things had to end, and the two couldn’t stay there forever in that moment.
