Conversations with Pops

Summary:

Ace was angry with the world, angry with his father, and angry with all those who thought he didn’t deserve to be alive.

Unbeknownst to the young man at the time, that anger would soon be filled with a fulfilling relationship he never would have seen coming.

“Pops, you got a minute? Can I talk to you?” calls Ace, his voice filled with emotion.

Notes:

Disclaimer: These characters belong to Eiichiro Oda, and the Funimation English Dub series. Also, I just wanted it to be known that I watch the show in the English dub, so those are the voices I imagine for the characters. No monetary gain is being made from this drabble. Set before Episode 483: “Looking for the Answer - Fire Fist Ace Dies on the Battlefield” for obvious reasons. Also, much like Episode 405, that episode also had me a sobbing mess on the couch while my husband stroked my hair and let me bury my face on him as I lamented the fact that Ace and Whitebeard died together on the battlefield in Marineford…

Work Text:

Conversations with Whitebeard were difficult. Ace was angry with the world, angry with all those who thought he didn’t deserve to be alive, and angry with the man the world called his father in lineage alone. Whitebeard had made Ace an offer to run wild with his crew, to never look back at the life he once led. Even as Whitebeard accepted Ace into his ranks and began to call the raven-haired, freckled, Devil Fruit user his son, it still wasn’t enough. Portgas D. Ace tried to kill Whitebeard nearly every day that he was first aboard the Moby Dick, so afraid of what having a true connection with Gol D. Roger’s rival might do to tarnish his beloved mother’s memory.

Conversations with Pops are easy. Pops has an open door policy where his sons can come to him at any time during the day or night and he will talk. The conversations could last mere minutes or could stretch as long as a few hours and Whitebeard would accept each conversation just the same. Sometimes Pops will just listen if any of his sons simply need to vent, but sometimes Pops is the one who initiates the conversations if he can tell something is bothering one of his boys. Although originally wary of sharing the deepest, darkest parts of himself with someone other than his brother Luffy or grandpa Garp, Ace comes to realize he thrives on his father-son relationship with Whitebeard. With his skills, tenacity, respect, and overall drive, Ace has been promoted to Second Division Commander today, which makes Whitebeard’s heart soar to see his other sons congratulate Ace on a job well done. However, with the position comes great power, respect, and, above all, responsibility.

A light knocks sounds on Whitebeard’s door.

“Pops, you got a minute? Can I talk to you?” calls Ace, his voice filled with emotion.

“For you, anything, Ace,” the Captain smiles, motioning to the chair at his desk. “Come on in and tell Pops all about it,” Whitebeard offers, pouring them both some sake.

Notes:

Author’s Note: I have so much I want to say about Ace and Whitebeard’s relationship that the only way I can think to do them justice is to spam you all with Ace and Whitebeard drabbles like this one! All three of the drabbles I will be posting this week were written the very next day after my husband and I watched Episode 483 back in March or April. My sister and I are extremely close like Ace and Luffy, so that scene was particularly startling to me, as I’m the oldest of the two of us and I would never wish that pain Luffy felt on anyone, especially not my younger sister. Whitebeard quickly became one of my favorite One Piece characters after the Marineford arc, especially with the determination and dedication he had to try to save Ace’s life. Ace already was one of my absolute favorite One Piece characters since he showed up on the Alabasta arc and asked the Straw Hats to take care of his kid brother. Anyway, I could talk forever about Ace and Whitebeard’s relationship and how it impacted me, but I will let these three drabbles speak for themselves. If you enjoyed, please let me know through likes, kudos, or a comment, as those really encourage me to continue to write more after a hiatus of several years from my writing prior to this year. Until next time, dear readers! Have a wonderful day, afternoon, or night!
