You Missed

Summary:

“Of course I remember.” March said after a moment, “Meeting the most wonderful, beautiful person in the universe… How could I forget?”

Stelle hums for a moment, nuzzling her head against the top of March’s, who was sunken slightly lower than her into the bed they were seated on. “I think of it often. Waking up, remembering nearly nothing, to Dan Heng and you. The two most important people in my life.”

March smiles, her pencil pausing against her paper. “It’s nice,” She starts, letting out a breath after a moment, “to have someone like me.”

Work Text:

They were comfortable. Together, under some blankets. It was warm, soft, comfortable. In March’s room, her plushies surrounding them in the most comfortable gathering imaginable. March’s wall of photos glowed softly in the room, only one other lamp on to illuminate the room from the darkness. The lamp beside them, also radiating a very gentle light. March noticed how it bounced off of Stelle’s face, coating her cheeks in gold while the wall of photos bathed her in blue. She looked beautiful. But before she was caught, she looks back at her notepad.

Focused, March draws loose lines on the page. Stelle is looking at the wall of photos, watching them change and rotate through an album that March is always adding to. There are photos of March, of Dan Heng. Of Stelle. Mostly the three of them, and some of the other wonderful people and beings they’ve met along the way. There are a few photos from before Stelle’s arrival, mostly of March and Dan Heng. The two of them were together a lot, sent on many missions and escapades together. Dan Heng was like a sister to March, they were very close. The three of them now were often together, doing things together and also decompressing, relaxing. Just being comfortable together.

Stelle was lost in the photos until March adjusted how she was sitting a little, grounding Stelle back in reality. Stelle adjusts as well, getting comfortable against her. “March,” Stelle says softly, “do you remember when wer first met?”

“Of course I do!” March chirped happily, glancing up from her pad of paper. “Dan Heng and I found you, we thought you were dying! Or dead! How scary would that have been… But you woke up, and oh, your eyes…” March started mumbling as she drifted into her memory.

March tried to collect herself as the person opened her eyes and sat up. The most gorgeous yellow gold stared up at her, heating up March’s cheeks like the hot coals left after a raging fire. March held her breath for a moment and then composed herself again as herself and Dan Heng helped the person up, watching her to make sure she was stable before backing up and asking her name.

Stelle.

“What do you mean?” Stelle asks, watching the photos on the wall as they talked.

“I mean… someone like me, someone who was… found, who remembers nothing from before she was found.” March mumbles, “Not that it’s a nice experience to have … But it’s nice to finally have someone who understands, even if the circumstances were different.”

Stelle hums. “I’m sorry you experienced that too, but I’m glad it comforts you. It comforts me too. Being understood.”

“Mmhm.” March smiles, then turns her head to look up at Stelle. “Can I brain your hair?”

“Okay…” Stelle nods, and they both adjust how they’re seated so that March can scoot behind Stelle, blankets billowing up around them and plushies being gently moved aside until they’re situated.

March combs through Stelle’s hair with her fingers slowly at first, gently and lovingly. Then she separates it into 3 parts and starts folding them into place; left into middle, right into middle, left into middle, right into middle… all the way down to the bottom.

Stelle is quietly playing on her phone while March braids, right up until March starts humming. She hums often, when she’s absent-mindedly doing something. She hums softly, a tune she heard recently, or one she’s known for longer. Sometimes it’s one she doesn’t know where it came from, but she knows the tune, and likes it. Stelle quietly turns her phone off and just listens to March’s humming until she finishes the braid with one of her hair ties.

March goes up on her knees, hands on Stelle’s shoulders as she leans around to kiss Stelle’s cheek. “All done!”

“You missed.” Stelle says, looking at March in the eyes, noticing the pink fade into blue. March giggles and scrunches up her nose. She leans their foreheads together, then softly kisses Stelle - properly this time.
