Summary
These days, Kiara wakes with the sun and does yoga on the back porch of the rented house she’s deemed Pogue House. She has granola and cut fruit for breakfast, does crosswords with Pope, watches marine biology documentaries on the flat screen TV, and circles JJ like an animal, trying and failing to find the right moment to talk.
He hasn’t been ignoring her so much as deflecting, a skill she never used to notice but now does with painful clarity. When Luke was still around, JJ would tilt his head to hide a bruise; now, he cracks a joke when she asks him how he’s doing, changes the topic whenever she tries to touch on this tenuous thing between them. She knows he tries to engage—she can see him forcing himself still when she draws near, jaw working and hands twitching—but then he blurts out something impulsive and the moment passes and Kiara is left to wonder if she’ll ever hear him say I love you again.
