In the middle of the night, people would usually hear a man talking to himself under the foot of Mt. Yougou: sometimes murmuring, sometimes loudly shouting and arguing. The rumours circulating around Grand Narukami Shrine has it that this man was unfortunately possessed by vengeful spirits of the soldiers who lost their lives during the cataclysm 500 years ago. Others assign this odd behaviour to garden-variety insanity.
Guuji Yae quickly and uncharacteristically dispelt such gossip though. For how could she allow her seniors to be treated with such disrespect? Sharing this story with the man in question, the astute Guuji was responded with a perplexed expression from the man and a high-pitched female voice.
“Well, they are not entirely incorrect, you know.”
“Hibiki, now is not the time.” A hoarse male voice retorted, but the person sitting in front of Lady Guuji hasn’t opened his mouth.
“But am I wrong though?” That female voice intoned once more.
Annoyedly, Lady Guuji’s official guest slammed his teacup on the table, attracting a great deal of unwanted attention from other shrine visitors. “Hibiki, are you calling yourself a vengeful spirit now?”
“I haven’t said that they are entirely accurate.” The high-pitched voice answered, pouting. She changed the subject. “You know, all of this could have been avoided if Nagamasa just went to sleep on time.”
That hoarse voice retaliated, clearly flustered. “H…How is it my fault that I still get nightmares?”
“Fine! It’s fine!” Lady Guuji’s honoured guest suddenly yelled out with no warning, inadvertently scaring the young shrine maiden apprentice who happened to be nearby. “It’s not like me to be worried about things like this. If they think I am possessed or insane then that would be their problem. Let’s just…worry about our businesses.”
All eyes were on him, no, three of them after the abrupt outburst. Lady Guuji’s efforts to dispel the rumours now seem to be all for naught.
