It's a Small World After All

Summary:

Of course Ice would begrudgingly support his husband in whatever he wanted to do (no matter how stupid), but accompanying (or essentially chaperoning) six grown pilots to a theme park was not his idea of a nice Saturday afternoon.

***

Mavdad and IcePops take their Dagger Ducklings to Disneyland. What could possibly go wrong?

Notes:

Hi everyone!!

I'm finally posting a TGM fic after over a year of reading all your lovely ones!! I always forget to actually bookmark them on AO3, but I have well over 200 fics saved and I love rereading every single one of them (and make sure to give all of you amazing writers kudos hehehe)

The timeline is a little bit jumbled in terms of when certain rides were actually at Disneyland and when this is actually set. Is it 2016, is it 2022? We may never know!

But other than that I hope you guys enjoy!!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Please remind me how I got roped into this?” Ice groaned as he finally saw the exit and turned off the freeway.

He still didn’t know what to expect after Maverick had come into his office earlier that week saying that for a team bonding day, he was taking his dagger squad to Disneyland that weekend and that he wanted Ice to tag along. Of course Ice would begrudgingly support his husband in whatever he wanted to do (no matter how stupid), but accompanying (or essentially chaperoning ) six grown pilots to a theme park was not his idea of a nice Saturday afternoon. But just to Ice’s luck, Bradley who had followed Maverick in, just had to give him his signature pleading eyes which always seemed to work on his Dad and Pops whenever he wanted something. It worked when he was four, and unfortunately almost thirty years later, Ice still couldn’t face it.

That’s how he somehow ended up in the driver's seat of a rental van, with Maverick riding shotgun, and six adults crammed in the back, driving up to Anaheim. Over those two hours, Ice seriously wondered how any of the pilots in the back had made it through TOP GUN, or how they were even the ones being trusted to defend the country. It felt as if he were driving literal children.

“Bagman, you kick my seat one more time and I’m going to smack you.” Phoenix threatened.

“It’s not my fault! Rooster’s going all spread eagle on me. I have no room!” Hangman complained as Bradley rolled his eyes.

“That’s what you get for putting the tallest one in the middle!” Bradley grumbled.

Maverick turned to Ice with a smile on his face, “It’s a bonding experience for the team. Plus I’ve pushed them so hard these past few months that it’s time they had some fun!”

“Yeah, come on Pops, it’ll be great!” Bradley said as they finally reached the park and parked the van after waiting in what felt like a never ending line “You used to take me all the time when I was a kid!” He added as he hopped out, giving Ice a grin.

“Kiddo I was a lot younger then.” Ice replied, as the group began to walk towards the front gate of the park.

“Don’t listen to him. He loved it even more than you did!” Maverick cut in as Ice rolled his eyes.

He would never admit it, but he did have a secret love for Disney. When Bradley was a child, the two of them used to sing songs from the movies whenever Bradley would help Ice in the kitchen, and there were many times when Maverick would come home to a full performance from the two of them. When he was younger he also loved taking Bradley to Disneyland and going on many rides, meeting characters, and indulging in the overpriced food. But that’s when he was in his twenties and thirties. It had been quite a while since then.

Maverick smiled, “It’s going to be a good day!”

The group hastily made their way up to the front gate, and scanned their tickets before heading into the park.

“Man, I can’t remember the last time I was here!” Bradley exclaimed as he looked around. “Probably close to twenty years ago!”

“This is my first time.” Phoenix said, as she and Bob followed behind, making the group stop and stare at her.

“But you’ve been to Disney World right?” Bob asked, raising an eyebrow as Phoenix shook her head.

“Nope, never been to anything Disney. I had the option growing up, but it never really appealed to me. I don’t know, it just seemed too childish.”

“You’ve never been to Disney?” Fanboy asked.

Hangman scoffed, looking genuinely offended. “What kind of childhood did you have?”

Phoenix rolled her eyes as she looked at Hangman,“One that didn’t cause my parents to spend hundreds of dollars so I could take a picture with a creepy guy in a furry suit.”

“Phoe this is about to be the best damn day of your life, and I refuse to hear any other arguments.” Hangman exclaimed, putting an arm around her.

“Since when are you a Disney fan Bagman?” Bob couldn’t help but laugh.

“Oh he’s not just a fan, he’s a secret Disney nerd.” Rooster added. “Every time we watch a movie, he suggests a Disney film.”

Hangman grumbled with embarrassment as the group made their way to Main Street.

“Alright, a few ground rules.” Maverick said, clapping his hands together. “First off, we all stick together.”

“Oh great, it’s like a Kindergarten field trip. Do you want us to hold hands too?” Hangman interjected.

“I refuse to hold his hand.” Rooster said, nodding to Hangman and crossing his arms as Ice sighed. Once again, literal children.

“The reason we stick together is because this is a team bonding trip. We all have to be able to compromise on rides, and make decisions as a group. Think of it as a training exercise. No man is left behind.” Maverick continued, “Do I make myself clear?”

The team all nodded.

“Alright, in that case, what should the first ride be?”

Hangman smirked, “I think we should introduce Trace to the most iconic Disney ride of all time. It’s a Small World .”

All the Daggers plus Ice groaned.

“Please no. Anything but that.” Payback pleaded.

“Come on Bagman, that ride’s for babies.” Bob added.

“Seriously Jake, even I hate that ride.” Rooster said, however Maverick had already made a decision.

It’s a Small World it is!”

“I thought that ride would never end” Payback groaned as they finally made their way off the boat. “That’s ten minutes of my life that I’ll never get back.”

“If I ever have to hear that song again, feel free to shoot me.” Fanboy added.

Rooster sighed, “I’m going to be seeing those dolls in my nightmares.”

“If this is what you think’s going to make me like Disneyland, think again Bagman.” Phoenix emphasized.

“You people have no imagination.” Hangman grumbled as they made their way back onto the streets.

“Ok ok Hangman chose first, so somebody else choose a ride.” Maverick ordered.

“Hey let’s go on Space Mountain!” Rooster suggested, “Phoe you should like that one! It’s a roller coaster in the dark.”

“Everyone good with Space Mountain?” Maverick asked as everyone nodded, “Ok let’s go!”

The group made their way over to Space Mountain, and was happy to see that there was only a short wait time. Eventually they all made their way on the ride, with Phoenix and Bob in the front, behind them were Payback and Fanboy, followed by Rooster and Hangman, finally with Maverick and Ice in the back. Maverick grinned as he could hear everyone whooping and hollering once the ride began. He could even feel Ice smiling next to him. Maverick chuckled to himself. It would be his mission to make Ice admit that he still loved Disney. He couldn’t help but burst into laughter as during one sharp curve, he purposely reached in front of him to grab Bradley’s shoulders making the younger aviator jump.

“Dad.” Bradley whined as Jake laughed next to him.

“Sorry kiddo I had to.” Maverick chuckled.

“So, Natasha, what did you think of that ride?” Ice asked once the ride stopped and they all got off.

“I have to admit, that one was pretty fun.” Phoenix smiled. “Definitely better than whatever Bagman picked,” She added as Hangman rolled his eyes.

“Hey! Well at least that’s still one ride closer to getting you to love Disney!” He added, pumping his fist.

“That one was fun! Almost makes me want to go to space.” Maverick said as Ice gave him a stern glare. He knew his husband, and while others would joke about going into space, Maverick would somehow actually find a way.

“Absolutely not.”

“Damn ok, I suppose the Darkstar was enough for me.” Maverick laughed as they exited back into the park. “Alright, what’s next?”

“Right over there’s the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters game! We could do that since it’s so close?” Fanboy suggested as the group all nodded.

They all made their way over to the ride and waited in the queue, before once again getting into pairs to get on.

“I better beat all these damn kids. Do they know they’re up against Naval aviators? I know how to control a real blaster.” Payback said as he got on.

“Dude it’s just a ride! Hangman called from behind. “Relax and have fun!”

“Won’t be so fun for you when I beat everyone!”

“Hey, in case you’ve forgotten, I’m your WSO. You don’t stand a chance against me.” Fanboy smirked as Payback narrowed his eyes.

“Should we make a little wager?”

“Hell no!” Rooster, who was sitting next to Hangman, also shouted from behind, “Last time you suggested a wager, we all had to do two-hundred pushups!”

“Yeah yeah, I’m still going to beat all of you.” Payback grumbled.

Soon enough, they were all moving throughout the track, aiming the plastic blasters at any target they could find.

“FUCK!” Payback yelled as he missed another one. “WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE THINGS?”

“Dude, there's kids here!” Fanboy exclaimed as Payback shrugged.

“They’ll learn soon enough.”

After only a couple minutes, the ride was over and the group was filing out.

“Hey 700,000. I’m a Cosmic Commando! Not bad!” Payback said as he looked at his score.

“Damn, Mav got 999,998! Almost the high score!” Hangman responded.

“What can I say! Years of practice” Maverick said smugly as Bradley suddenly gasped.

“Pops you got the high score!” He pointed, and sure enough right above Maverick’s score was Ice’s: 999,999.

Maverick’s jaw dropped as Bradley and the rest of the Daggers burst into laughter.

“Way to go Sir!” Bob said and Ice chuckled and raised an eyebrow at Maverick with a smirk on his face.

“Hey Mav, who’s the better pilot? You or me?”

“Unbelievable.” Maverick grumbled, heading out from the attraction as Ice walked proudly behind him.

“See, you still got it Pops!” Bradley said as Ice laughed.

“Who said I ever lost it?”

After taking a little break to grab some food, and waiting for Fanboy who insisted he had to take a picture with Donald Duck (it was his mission to get pictures with as many characters as possible), Maverick once again asked which ride would be next.

“That last ride was fun, but I need something thrilling again!” Phoenix said as they all finished eating.

“Ooo how about the spinning teacups!” Payback suggested.

“We just ate!” Phoenix raised an eyebrow.

“So? We’re in the Navy! If we can go upside down in jets, we can handle a little spinning! What do you think, Pops?” Hangman exclaimed, turning to Maverick.

“I’m going to leave that decision up to all of you.” He responded.

“Alright! Tea Cups!” Hangman ordered as Bradley audibly gulped.

He didn’t know why, but for some reason he could never handle the tea cups. Even when he was a kid, the spinning motion always left him incredibly dizzy and feeling like he was about to puke.

Unfortunately much to his luck, the rest of the Daggers agreed, and he found himself making his way over to Fantasyland to the Mad Tea Party.

“You don’t have to go on if you don’t want to kiddo.” Ice whispered to Bradley as they reached the spinning ride. “I know the spinning bothers you.”

Bradley really didn’t want to. He wanted to just sit this one out and maybe grab a churro or something. But he also couldn’t look like–as Hangman would so kindly put it–a fucking pussy. He was a grown man who was in the Navy. He had been upside-down in a jet many times and could handle it. It had been many years since he had been on a spinning ride. It should be fine. Right?

Bradley nodded, “It’s ok. That’s when I was a kid. I can do it now.”

Maverick and Ice, having decided to sit this one out, watched as the six aviators got on and piled into two teacups, with Rooster, Hangman, and Phoenix in one, and Bob, Payback, and Fanboy in the other. Before long, the ride began, and he could hear the aviators cackling as they kept spinning.

“So are you back to loving Disney yet?” Maverick grinned as Ice rolled his eyes.

“It’s been fun so far if that’s what you’re asking,” He responded.

“Oh come on you know you love it! We do have some pretty good memories here.” Maverick smirked.

Ice smirked as well, “Well that I remember.” He said, pulling Maverick close, “1987, behind Cinderella’s castle.”

“I’m surprised we weren’t caught and banned for life”. Maverick added.

“You just have to know the right way to sneak around.” Ice grinned.

“BAGMAN STOP SPINNING IT SO HARD!” They both heard Phoenix call out from the ride.

“NO WAY I’M TRYING TO SEE HOW FAST THIS THING CAN GO!” Hangman yelled back.

Ice looked over and spotted Bradley who looked to be gripping the sides of the tea cup and sighed. He could already tell this was going to end very badly.

Finally the ride stopped and Ice and Maverick observed as the group piled off. Ice watched Bradley, who looked to be having trouble keeping his balance. He appeared to be trying to find a still focal point to look at to stop his dizziness but was having no luck. It was when he locked eyes with Ice that things really got bad.

Ice could see that as soon as Bradley looked at him, a face was made that Ice recognized very well. He had seen it many times when Bradley was growing up, and it was a face that was only made seconds before disaster.

Pulling himself from Maverick’s grasp, Ice quickly made his way over to Bradley and grabbed his arm, hauling him over to the nearest trash can, just barely making it in time before the younger aviator was throwing up everything he had eaten.

“It’s alright baby, just get it out.” Ice cooed, rubbing Bradley’s back as he continued to vomit.

“Shit Roo, are you ok?” Hangman asked, worriedly coming over, however the only sounds that were made from Bradley were a couple mumbles before more puking was heard.

“It’s ok Jake,” Maverick said, quickly coming over as well, “Bradley’s always been very sensitive to spinning rides like this. Same thing happened when he was eight.”

“Yet he’s an aviator.” Hangman raised an eyebrow.

“It’s funny isn’t it. Somehow spinning or going upside down in jets don’t bother him, but the teacups are his worst enemy.” Maverick responded as Ice continued to focus on Bradley.

Eventually Bradley finished vomiting, and slowly lifted himself up from the trash can, immediately grabbing onto Ice for support as everything was still spinning.

“Need to…sit” Bradley choked out as Ice helped him over to the nearest bench and sat down next to him, pulling Bradley to lean against his shoulder.

“Is there anything I can do?” Hangman asked the two older aviators as he and Maverick followed to where Bradley was still struggling to get his bearings.

“You’re fine kiddo. How about you and the rest of the team go on a couple more rides, and we’ll meet you guys when Bradley’s feeling a bit better. We don’t want to keep you from enjoying the park.” Maverick suggested.

Jake nodded, but Ice could still see the concern plastered on his face. In all honesty, Ice found it pretty endearing to see how much the usually cocky aviator seemed to care for his son. Although they fought like cats and dogs, it was clear that there was a deeper connection. One that could only remind him of what was shared between Maverick and himself.

Ice remembered one time back shortly after their TOP GUN days and just before they started dating, when he and Maverick had both been stationed in Bosnia, and Maverick had gotten seriously injured during a routine training. There was nothing that could have prevented it, as it was chalked up to faulty mechanics of the plane, but Ice had been absolutely beside himself. He and Maverick had been bickering all morning, but seeing him lying in that small hospital bed, Ice knew that he would do anything to protect that man from harm's way. He didn’t realize until then that all that hatred and anger he had felt towards Maverick turned out to be love and fear. It was shortly after that that Ice had made his first move on his future husband.

“Don’t worry Jake. We’ll keep you updated on Bradley. But he’s going to be fine. Just a little dizzy. Isn’t that right, Gosling?” Ice asked as Bradley made a noise of confirmation.

“Mmm ok…Hangman.” Bradley mumbled, holding out a hand to Jake, as Ice could see the aviator blush at Bradley finally calling him by his true call sign. A bit of a truce.

“I’m glad Roo. I’ll see you guys in a bit.” Jake said, squeezing Bradley’s hand, before letting go as he went to join the rest of the group.

“I’m going to go grab you some water. I’ll be right back B.” Maverick said, as Bradley nodded into Ice’s shoulder.

“How’re you feeling kiddo?” Ice asked as Maverick walked away.

“Still trying to stop the spinning.” Bradley groaned, closing his eyes.

“I know, baby. It’ll be over soon. Just let me know if you think you’re going to be sick again.” Ice said.

They sat in silence for a few minutes, before suddenly he felt a weight on the other side of the bench. Ice looked over Bradley’s head and fought the urge to laugh. There on the other side of Bradley was Pluto. Pluto had always been one of Bradley’s favorite Disney characters as a child, and Ice fondly remembered the two of them taking a picture with the character when Bradley had been around seven. It was a picture that Ice still kept on his desk on the base, even when he and Bradley hadn’t been on speaking terms.

“Hi Pluto.” Ice chuckled as the dog waved its stuffed paw.

“He’s just taking his break!” Ice looked up to see a Disney cast member smiling at him.

“So is he.” Ice pointed to Bradley who appeared to have fallen asleep leaning against him.

“Aww is this your son?” The cast member asked.

“Yup, my thirty-three year old son who can take down enemy jets in the Navy, but whose greatest enemy is the spinning teacups.” Ice laughed.

“How cute! Well those tea cups can be dangerous!” The cast member grinned, “Would you like me to take a picture of you two with Pluto?” She then asked.

Ice thought for a minute. He knew that Bradley would be absolutely mortified having a picture of this moment, but Ice found the whole thing too funny to care. It would be cute to have an updated picture to go along with the one on his desk, plus this is what Bradley gets for having urged him to come in the first place.

“Why not!” Ice chuckled, handing the cast member his phone.

She snapped a picture of a smiling Ice and a still passed out Bradley with Pluto right next to him.

Ice couldn’t help but laugh when he saw the pictures. Bradley was going to be completely embarrassed but it was totally worth it! He thanked the cast member and Pluto as they got up to go to their next spot in the park, before waiting a few minutes longer for Maverick to finally come back with some water.

“Sorry about that! The line was ridiculously long.” He said, sitting down next to Bradley on the bench, grinning when he saw that he was asleep.

“Hey kiddo, I brought you some water.” Maverick said softly, trying to rouse Bradley out of his sleep.

Bradley’s eyes slowly opened, and he sighed in relief as the world had finally stopped spinning.

“Thanks Dad.” He said quietly, pushing himself up and taking the water from Maverick before drinking greedily from the bottle, and immediately felt much better after rehydrating.

“Of course baby.” Maverick said, rubbing Bradley’s back as he continued drinking.

“Oh I have something to show you two!” Ice smirked, as he took out his phone to show Maverick and Bradley the picture that had been taken of the two of them.

As soon as Bradley saw the embarrassing photo, he immediately choked on his water in surprise.

“What…the…hell?” He spluttered as Maverick was dying of laughter.

“I can’t believe I missed that!” Maverick exclaimed as Bradley groaned.

“I can’t believe I actually passed out.”

“Hey you look adorable kiddo!” Maverick cooed.

“Please Pops, you can not show anyone that!” Bradley pleaded as Ice smirked.

“Sorry B, but I had to let the rest of the Daggers know you were ok!”

Bradley felt his phone buzz, and immediately he could see the Daggers group chat blowing up with texts. Apparently Ice had sent the pictures to Jake, who had immediately shown everyone else, and now they were all joking about how adorable Bradley looked, while Fanboy was wondering where Pluto went next.

“This is going in my office! Or maybe I’ll make it my new phone wallpaper.” Ice grinned as Bradley scoffed.

“Hey in that case, I may have to show the Daggers the picture of you dressed up as Batman for Halloween when I was six”

“Oh that was a good picture!” Maverick couldn’t help but laugh at that statement, as Ice rolled his eyes.

“At least I wasn’t the one dressed as Robin.” He smirked, making Bradley laugh as Maverick grumbled.

“Yeah ok fine. Anyway , do you feel up to going on another ride Baby Goose?”

Bradley nodded, and thought for a moment.

“Before we meet up with the rest of the Daggers, there is one ride that I’d like to go on with just you two.” He smirked.

Ice was going to throttle his son.

Ok obviously he would never do that, but of course Maverick’s mischievous nature just had to rub off on Bradley.

Hence the reason why just to Ice’s luck, he found himself in the front row of the log on Splash Mountain.

“How did I get roped into this?” Ice grumbled as Bradley, who was sitting behind him, laughed.

“Come on Pops, you used to love this ride!” Bradley exclaimed as their log went through the tunnel. “I’ve seen the picture of us going down when I was a kid, and you were definitely enjoying it!”

“Well yeah, of course in my twenties I loved this. But at this age, I’m not sure how much I feel like being soaking wet.” Ice replied, glaring at the animatronics.

“Ice, you’re not even sixty! Stop acting like you’re old.” Maverick, who was sitting behind Bradley, smiled as they kept going. “Just live a little!”

“Oh I see you’re enjoying this aren’t you.” Ice rolled his eyes as Maverick smirked.

“Hey, the view back here is great!”

“Bradley, I’m giving you permission to turn around and smack your dad for me.” Ice said and Bradley grinned.

“No can do Pops!” He said, turning around to high five Maverick as they got through the dark part of the tunnel.

Unfortunately this is where the log started going up the tall ramp. Ice knew what was coming. Oh how he had to find a way to get his husband and son back after pulling a stunt like this. Meanwhile Bradley and Maverick were having the time of their lives singing Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah . Sometimes Ice found it hard to believe that those two goofballs were the ones who survived an almost impossible suicide mission only a few months ago. But thinking about how he almost lost them that day only made him glad that they were both alive, and together singing behind him.

Ice remembered the first time he had taken Bradley on Splash Mountain. The first few times he and Mav had taken Bradley to Disneyland, the ride hadn’t actually been built yet. But when Ice and Maverick had heard a new water ride was coming, they knew they had to take Bradley. Unfortunately, Maverick had suddenly been called for deployment the summer it was ready, and Bradley had been absolutely devastated. Ice still remembered all the nights Bradley had come into his room sobbing, missing Maverick immensely. Carole was already sick, so Ice had been doing most of the looking after Bradley, and both of them knew that her time was getting close.

Wanting to cheer the kid up, Ice had decided to take him to Disneyland, just the two of them, and hoped that the new ride would be something that Bradley would enjoy. They had gotten lucky and had gotten the first two spots on the log, so Ice had obviously given the front spot to the kid. However, a mischievous part of him decided not to tell the kid what would happen on this ride. He had heard about the big drop at the end, but thought it would be a funny surprise for Bradley. Bradley had been enjoying the ride going through the dark and around the turns and seemed to be giggling at the animatronics, when suddenly they had gone up the ramp. Bradley had been in awe once they had gotten to the top, when the log suddenly flew forward and straight down, eliciting happy screams out of the kid. The log had suddenly reached the bottom, sending a huge wave over everyone, but especially soaking Bradley.

It was then that he had frozen. Ice watched as the kid didn’t move for a couple seconds, and he had been worried that he had majorly fucked up. Maybe Bradley hadn’t been ready for this. Maybe it was the wrong idea to put him in the front where he’d get completely wet. The ride had come to an end, and Bradley still hadn’t moved. Ice remembered putting a hand on his dripping shoulder, when the kid had suddenly turned around with the biggest smile on his face and had burst out laughing, begging Ice to take him again. It was the happiest he had seen him in a long time, and at that very moment, he had known that no matter what happened, Ice would always be there for Bradley, and would do anything to see him smile like that. After getting off the ride, Ice had gotten a copy of the picture that had been taken of them, and had absolutely melted when he saw the happy looks on both their faces. Since then, it had always been one of their favorite rides to go on. And this was the first time in almost two decades that they had been on together again.

Ice was broken out of his memory by the feeling of the log tipping over the edge of the ramp and going straight down. He laughed as he heard Bradley and Maverick’s whooping and hollering as they went down. Ice couldn’t help it, and broke out in a big grin as he got absolutely drenched when they hit the bottom. Bradley was laughing behind him, and Ice knew he must be having the best time. He couldn’t explain it, but finally being able to go on the ride with both Bradley and Maverick even after all this time felt like a piece was finally put back into place. He couldn’t contain the happiness he felt just knowing that he had his family put back together. Before long, the ride was over, and the three of them were climbing out of the log, all soaking wet.

“God I missed that ride!” Bradley exclaimed, shaking his head to try to get some of the water out of his hair. “Come on Pops, you have to admit that you love it!”

“Ok I’ll admit kiddo, I did love that one.” Ice laughed as they made their way through to the darkroom where pictures from the ride were being shown.

“Look, there’s our picture!” Maverick said, pointing up to the screen. He couldn’t help but beam when he saw the picture. Bradley looked like he was in absolute bliss with a wide smile on his face. It was a look that reminded Maverick so much of Bradley’s childhood, and it warmed his heart to see that his son still had that part of him even close to twenty years later.

Maverick was also smiling in the picture, but what got him most of all was seeing Ice who had a genuine grin on his face.

Over the years, Maverick and Ice had been through so much with not having Bradley in their lives, Maverick’s constant screw ups and deployments, Ice’s intense work as the COMPACFLT, as well as the cancer scare Ice had a few years back. Not to mention the stress that the recent mission put on the both of them. All of that had caused Ice to lose much of his carefree attitude. The mischievousness and sometimes smugness that Ice had carried during his time at TOP GUN was replaced by a stoic professionalism that even Maverick sometimes found hard to crack. Ice had gone from being the energetic and flirtatious man that Maverick had first fallen for to being more detached and simply focusing on his work.

That is until Bradley came back into their lives. Maverick hadn’t fully realized just how much Ice’s life had also been affected by the absence of their son. And Ice had been forced to remain the strong one while Maverick had felt like he was falling apart. He was there to pick up the pieces of his husband while he himself had been hurting. But throughout the few months since they had both reconciled with Bradley, Maverick could see the old Ice coming back bit by bit. There was still a spark in his eyes which Maverick remembered seeing the very first time he met his rival turned husband. And seeing this picture proved to Maverick that Ice was truly happy again. That just like Maverick he finally felt complete. And could finally be himself again instead of hiding under the admiral mask that he had put on for so long. Seeing that picture of the three of them felt like a weight had been lifted off of Maverick’s chest. It meant that things were alright again.

“Dad, are you ok?” Maverick was broken out of his thoughts to see both Bradley and Ice looking back at him with worried looks on their faces. He hadn’t realized he had tears in his eyes until he felt one slip down his cheeks. Quickly wiping it away, Maverick gave them both a genuine smile.

“I’m ok, I promise. I’m just really happy to see that picture. Is there a way we can get a copy of it?” He asked as Bradley laughed.

“I already have it saved on my phone. We’ll all be able to have a copy.”

Maverick shook his head. “God, I am behind on today’s technology.”

The three of them made their way out of the dark room and back into the park, all grateful that it was so hot out that they would dry quickly.

“So, where–” But before Maverick could ask where they should go next, he was cut off by Bradley suddenly wrapping him in a hug.

“Hey, kiddo, what is it?” He asked worriedly as Bradley sniffled.

“Thank you for today.” He mumbled into Maverick’s shoulder. “And for being here.” Maverick smiled. It was clear that they all needed this day as a family, and that even after all this time, Bradley was finally seeing just how much love his Dad and Pops still had for him.

“Of course baby. I’m so glad that we got to recreate these memories. And I’m not leaving anytime soon.”

Bradley felt Ice rubbing his back, and turned around so he could hug him as well.

“And Pops, thanks for coming today. And for bringing me as a child. And really for everything you’ve done for me.” He said.

Ice could hear Bradley getting a bit choked up, and gently shushed him as he continued to rub his back.

“You know I’d do anything for you Baby Goose.” Ice said softly.

Bradley pulled back, wiping his eyes and looked at Maverick and Ice.

“I’m just glad we got to come here today. I hadn’t realized just how much I missed our family traditions from when I was a kid, and it was nice to have that feeling again. We have so many happy memories together, and I miss getting to make those. I feel like I’ve been saying this all the time, but I just really missed you.”

“Sweetheart, fifteen years is a long time. It’s not something that can just be completely fixed overnight. We still think about how much we missed you, so it’s completely normal that you’d still be doing the same. But the biggest thing is that we’re all together again, so when you do miss us, we’re always going to be right here for you.” Ice replied.

“And it doesn’t matter how old you are. We have plenty more happy memories to be made, and childhood traditions that we can continue! ” Maverick added as Bradley nodded.

“I love you both.” He choked out with a tearful smile.

“Oh baby, we love you too.” Maverick said, pulling Bradley back in for a hug, while reaching an arm out for Ice to join in.

“More than anything.” Ice added.

Bradley sighed as he separated from his Dad and Pops, “I uh, I guess we better go see what the group has been up to.”

Ice chuckled.

“I don’t even want to know”

“I just don’t get it!” Phoenix exclaimed as the group continued to walk around the park after getting the news that Rooster was ok.

“What’s not to get?” Hangman argued. “Disneyland is known as The Happiest Place on Earth, so the fact that you’re not absolutely in love with the place is actual bullshit.”

“I mean I would say this place is fun, but I haven’t actually been in love with it since I was a kid.” Bob interjected.

“Yeah, now I kind of just treat it as every other amusement park. Ok maybe it’s a little better than all the others, but ultimately it is just a place to spend money and go on rides. Relive some memories.” Payback added.

“I mean it’s great, I’m having fun and everything, but I just don’t understand your complete obsession with it! Seriously, what made you so connected to a theme park? Why are you so insistent that I love this place?” Phoenix asked as Hangman stopped walking and took a breath.

“Jesus ok look, my parents were shit people. You guys know that, and know that I haven’t talked to them in almost five years. My childhood was hell. No one gave a shit about me or what I did. And even though they had a lot of money, I practically raised myself. But the only good memory I have from growing up is when my parents randomly decided to take my sisters and I to Disneyland, and it’s like something magically changed. I don’t know what was in the air that day, but it’s like we were a completely different family. For once they were attentive, and took us on rides, bought us ice cream, and genuinely seemed happy to be with me. It was the first time that I actually knew what joy was. And every time I’ve come here since then, no matter how old I’ve been, I’m immediately brought back to that feeling the first time I came here. It’s a place where no matter how old you are or how much shit you’ve gone through in your life, you can just set that aside and be a kid again. So I don’t know, maybe I just wanted you to be able to feel what I did the first time I came here. To be able to just set all the aviation and mission stuff aside, and just have fun for a day.”

The rest of the group looked back with wide eyes at Hangman’s sudden outburst. This was the honest to God first time they’d ever heard him talk in depth about his childhood, and show a true form of emotion. They all paused for a second, unsure as to how to react.

“Jake–” Phoenix began before Hangman shook his head.

“No, it’s fine really. I’m sorry I got so crazy about it.”

“It’s not fine.” Phoenix interrupted, “I’m sorry I teased you about all this. I didn’t realize just how much it meant to you, and how deeply connected you are. I’m glad you wanted me to enjoy it as much as you did. While I personally can’t connect on the same level since I didn’t go when I was a kid, I get wanting to hold onto those happy memories. And even if you didn’t make too many when you were a kid, I hope that we can all still make some good ones together.”

“Thanks Phoe.” Hangman said, with a small smile as Phoenix came forward to give him a hug.

“Holy shit, Hangman and Phoenix getting along? Quick look for the pig flying, the world may be ending!” Payback joked as the other aviators rolled their eyes.

Anyway ,” Hangman smirked with an arm still around Phoenix, “Phoe still hasn’t chosen a ride of her own to go on so I think she should pick one while we wait for Roo, Mav, and Ice.”

“Is there anything specific you want to see?” Bob asked as Phoenix thought for a moment.

“I mean I still don’t know most of the rides here, but I did hear how they had a new Star Wars land. Maybe we could head over there?”

“Wait a damn minute. Is Natasha Trace a secret Star Wars fan?” Hangman smirked.

“I just want to go check out the land!” Phoenix argued as Hangman continued smirking.

“Whatever you say Trace.”

The group made the long walk over to Galaxy’s Edge, and couldn’t believe how realistic it looked. As it was the first time any of them saw it, it was cool to see it really come to life. It was as if they were actually on Batuu.

“Look at this place!” Bob exclaimed, “A droid depot, a lightsaber workshop.”

“Look at that Millennium Falcon! It looks so real! What I wouldn’t give to fly one of those!” Phoenix beamed.

“I'll take it back.” Hangman laughed, “Natasha Trace is a complete Star Wars nerd. Suddenly me being a Disney nerd doesn’t look so bad!”

“So? They were cool movies! Hot men and badass women. Also space travel and aircrafts even cooler than F-18s.” Phoenix argued, “Plus Rooster told me how you wanted to watch The Little Mermaid one night, so yeah your thing is still worse.”

“Hey, he agreed to it.” Jake argued before realizing that he wasn’t really helping his case.

“Ok ok, which ride are we going on?” Payback asked.

“I heard Rise of the Resistance is supposedly the best one!” Bob replied as the rest of the group seemed to agree.

They made their way over to the ride and were shocked to see that there was an hour wait time.

“Are you kidding me?” Payback exclaimed.

“We can’t wait an hour. Roo, Mav, and Ice will be looking for us.” Bob added. “Is there anything else you’d want to go on Tash?”

“Yeah, I’ll find something.” Phoenix shrugged, but Hangman could easily see the defeat in her eyes.

“Wait. There is a way we could wait less time. Only if everyone is willing to drop twenty bucks to pay for the lightning lane–granted it’s still available. Then it should only be about ten minutes.” He said as everyone seemed to agree.

It was an absolute miracle that they were able to find five lightning lane passes for the current time, and immediately purchased them before hopping on line. It was by far the most interesting ride the group had gone on so far. Phoenix couldn’t help but beam as their First Order Fleet Transport vehicle moved around with all sorts of effects and drop like motions that made it truly feel as if they were in a battle against the First Order. The ride seemed to go on and on, and the group was shocked when it finally ended to see that they had been on for about eighteen minutes.

“That was amazing!” Phoenix exclaimed as they all exited the ride. “Thanks for finding a way for us to go Bagman.”

“Just my Disney magic.” He replied as the group rolled their eyes.

“Way to make it weird. Anyway, Roo just texted saying they’re just leaving Splash Mountain, so we can head over there to meet them all.” Phoenix said.

“Wait! First I want to get a picture with a stormtrooper!” Fanboy said, pointing over to where one was standing. “Come on, we can get a group photo!”

The group followed, and all smiled as their picture was taken with it.

“I think I could make a pretty good stormtrooper. I’d be able to use those blasters.” Hangman said as the group walked away from Galaxy’s Edge and began heading towards Critter Country.

“Please, you’d end up thrown off the Death Star. Plus stormtroopers are known for having notoriously bad aim. There’s no way you’d make any of those shots.” Phoenix replied as Hangman shook his head.

“Man, you really are a geek.” He joked as Phoenix rolled her eyes.

The group eventually made their way over to Critter Country, where they found Bradley, Maverick, and Ice waiting by the water.

“Where’d you guys go?” Bradley asked as the group approached, “We’ve been waiting for like half an hour.”

“Sorry! We got caught up in the new Star Wars land.” Phoenix said.

“Yeah, turns out Nix here is a real Star Wars nerd!” Hangman added as Phoenix sighed.

“How much longer are you going to be on that?” She asked.

Hangman smirked, “Until I find out something else embarrassing about you.”

“Woah woah woah,” Bradley interrupted, “Did you just say Star Wars land ?”

“Yeah, it’s called Galaxy’s Edge. It’s brand new!” Bob replied.

“We just came from the Rise of the Resistance ride! Definitely one of the best rides here!” Payback added.

“Plus we took a picture with a stormtrooper!” Fanboy said, showing everyone the picture they took as Bradley’s jaw dropped.

“How did I not know this! Can we go on the ride again? I want to see it!”

“Probably not. It had like an hour wait time. We only got lucky because they miraculously had lightning lane passes left.” Hangman said as Bradley grumbled.

“Don’t worry B, we’ll check it out another time.” Ice smiled. Both he and Bradley had a love for the films, so he couldn’t help but also be curious to see what the new land was like.

“Wait, Bradshaw, are you also a Star Wars nerd?” Hangman smirked as Bradley nodded.

“Who do you think showed me the films in the first place?” Phoenix replied.

“You’ve been a Star Wars nerd and you made fun of me for liking Disney films?” Hangman gawked.

Bradley laughed, “Hangman, my choice in movies has badass characters and futuristic technology. Your choice has talking animals and musical numbers.”

“Don’t worry Jake, when Bradley was younger, his favorite movie was The Lion King, and he used to act out all the parts for us. Choreography included.” Maverick interjected as Bradley gasped, turning beet red with embarrassment.

Dad, why would you tell him that?”

“Because kiddo, you were absolutely adorable, and you can’t deny that you also like Disney films. I know I have some home videos somewhere.” Maverick grinned, turning back to Jake, “A few that may even include the all powerful Admiral Kazansky joining in.”

“Well those I have to see.” Jake laughed as Bradley rolled his eyes.

“Ok, can we just go on another ride before you say something else about my embarrassing childhood?”

“And my apparently embarrassing adult life.” Ice sighed.

Maverick nodded, before looking at his phone to see it was already around 5pm.

“It’s already the evening, so if everyone feels done with this park, since we got the park hopper tickets, we could always head over to California Adventure and check that out? We’ll come back here for the fireworks so if there’s any rides that we missed we can go on them then!”

“Oh yeah, that would be cool to see! I’ve never been before! I had stopped going by the time it was built.” Bradley said.

“Everyone good with that?” Maverick asked as the rest of the team seemed to agree.

The group made their way out of the park, and headed across to the newer California Adventure park.

“See kiddo, this’ll be our first new Disney memory together since we’ve never been here before!” Maverick said to Bradley as they reached the other park.

Bradley beamed as he looked around. It was nice to be filled with so much wonder, just like when he had visited the original Disneyland Park for the first time.

“Does anyone see any rides they’d like to go on?” Maverick asked as they made their way through the park.

“I heard there’s a Cars Land here! We could go check that out! There’s supposed to be a racetrack ride.” Hangman suggested.

Everyone agreed, before making their way over to Cars Land and to the Radiator Springs Racers, which Ice couldn’t help but be in awe of. The whole setup was pretty impressive, spanning a good portion of the park, and was decorated to mirror a canyon drive. Luckily the group had arrived when most people were heading for dinner so they were able to get right on the ride. As the cars only fit six people, the eight of them decided to split up into two cars, with Ice, Maverick, Payback, and Fanboy in one car, and Rooster, Hangman, Phoenix, and Bob in the other.

“Our car better win!” Rooster exclaimed as he sat down.

“Good luck with that kid!” Maverick called from his car with a smirk on his face, “I feel the need for speed!”

“You know it’s all random. Everything’s left up to chance.” Hangman, who was sitting beside Rooster said as the latter turned and narrowed his eyes.

“And ours better win.”

The cars suddenly took off through the racetrack, and everyone was whooping and hollering as they went through. Even Ice thought that this was a very innovative ride and was really enjoying himself. And by pure luck, his car ended up beating Bradley’s car which for some reason still left his adult son pouting.

“How? How did we not win?” Bradley grumbled as he hopped out as Maverick walked over with a smug look.

“Sorry kiddo. Nobody can beat me.”

“This isn’t over old man.” Bradley warned as Hangman rolled his eyes.

“It’s random. Roo you may win the next race.” But he could tell that his interjection was pointless.

Ice laughed as he came up beside the aviator, still watching Maverick and Bradley fake bicker, “Don’t even bother Jake. Unfortunately Bradley has inherited Maverick’s ridiculous competitive nature. Once the two of them get going, there’s no shutting them down.”

“I see that.” Jake smirked as they all headed back into the main park.

After taking a break to go for dinner at Carthay’s Circle Restaurant (which Ice begrudgingly treated all of the Daggers to for a hefty price of almost $800), and going on a couple more smaller rides (where Rooster yelled at Hangman when he tried to get them to go on the swinging gondolas on the Pixar-Pal-Around), the group finally went to do some shopping where Hangman tried to force everyone–especially Phoenix to buy a pair of Mickey Mouse ears.

“Come on! It’ll be a fun way to remember today!” He pleaded as the group all raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah, but do you really expect us to each drop thirty bucks for those?” Fanboy replied, “They’re childish.”

Hangman sighed, “Ok fine, even if you guys don’t want to get them, Phoe you have to. This is your first trip to Disneyland, and you need to have ears to show that you went.”

“We still have Bradley’s ears from his first trip. You had the classic black Mickey ears hat.” Maverick said as Bradley laughed.

“Oh God, I remember those! I can’t believe you still have them! Maybe I’ll get an updated pair. One that’ll fit my bigger head.”

“See, even Roo’s going to get some. Whaddya say Tash? I’ll even pay.” Hangman said as Phoenix shrugged.

“If you’re paying.”

The group headed over to one of the gift shops and proceeded to browse the selection of ears and headbands. Hangman couldn’t help but burst into laughter when he saw Rooster putting on the original Mickey ears.

“Hey Rooster, you look good.”

Rooster chuckled at Hangman stealing his line, “I am good, Hangman. I’m very good.”

“You look like a true Disney fan. However they still look better than your God awful Hawaiian shirts.”

Rooster smirked, “Well maybe I’ll have to wear these for our next movie night.”

Hangman couldn’t help but blush and raise an eyebrow at the comment as Rooster gave a grin.

“Ok, I think I found one.” Phoenix announced, as Hangman and Rooster’s attention quickly shifted to her, who was holding up a fuzzy brown set of Minnie Mouse ears.

“A Star Wars one, really?” Hangman asked as Rooster laughed.

“Hey it’s an Ewok! That’s so cool!” He said, high fiving Phoenix as Hangman rolled his eyes.

“Ok whatever. I’ll go pay for it.” He said, taking the headband, muttering about how they were nerds and he was about to spend forty-five dollars for this.

After Hangman made his purchase for Phoenix, which he immediately forced her to wear, and Bradley made his own purchase of ears, the group headed out of the shop onto the darkened streets.

“Ok, we should have time for one more ride before we have to head over to the fireworks, so does anyone have any suggestions for what they’d like to go on?” Maverick asked.

“Wait! I just realized something. Bob’s the only Dagger who hasn’t chosen a ride yet!” Hangman announced as the group all whipped their heads towards Bob.

“Dude, why didn’t you say anything?” Payback asked.

“I don’t know,” Bob shrugged, “I was happy to go on everything, so I really didn’t have any preferences.”

“Come on, are there any rides that you’d really like to go on?” Bradley pressed.

Bob thought for a moment, and then smiled.

“Well there is one.”

“Bob, you are a crazy man.” Hangman exclaimed as they waited in line for the Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout Ride.

“Yeah, I went on this in Disney World as the Tower of Terror, and shit’s intense.” Fanboy added.

“It doesn’t spin, right?” Bradley asked in all seriousness as Fanboy laughed.

“No, I promise you it doesn’t. It just goes up and down, making it feel like your stomach’s dropping down to your ass.”

“Ok, that I can handle.” Bradley grinned, as the group made their way through the queue and watched the preshow.

“Never did I think I’d find a CGI raccoon cool, but here we are.” Payback laughed as they finally made their way up to the lift, where just to their luck, they had the front row open.

As there were only seven seats per row, Ice decided to sit in the second row to give the younger aviators…and Mav (always a child at heart) a chance to sit up front. The group piled in and took their seats, with the row going Maverick (with Ice behind him), Bradley, Hangman, Phoenix, Bob, Payback, Fanboy.

“Why do I feel like I may regret this ride?” Bradley commented as the lift began moving up.

“Don’t worry, you won’t. But be prepared to scream!” Fanboy said.

“My dear friends, this is the moment you have been waiting for” The collector’s voice was overhead, before everyone watched as the shadow of Rocket popped up.

“Yeah, when Rocket unplugs you, AND STARTS THINGS ROCKIN!”

They all laughed as The Jackson 5’s I Want You Back started playing as everyone was instructed to put their hands up, when the doors closed, and the lift suddenly dropped, eliciting screams out of most of the daggers.

“YUP. STOMACH IS IN ASS!” Hangman yelled as the lift suddenly went up before free falling down again.

Bradley laughed as he sang along when the ride stopped for a moment before grabbing both Hangman and Maverick’s hands as the ride crashed down again.

“HOLY SHIT.” He yelled as he felt the ride jerk again. Hangman couldn’t help but blush as Rooster grabbed his hand, before yelling once again as the ride dropped, while Maverick simply cheered every time.

“Ok this is more intense than Mav’s flying. And that’s saying something.” Rooster added as he shut his eyes.

“Hey!” Maverick protested as Ice cackled behind him.

Phoenix had looped her arm with both Hangman and Bob’s as even she couldn’t help but scream at the force of the drop. Payback and Fanboy meanwhile laughed as they waved their arms in the air. Even Ice couldn’t help but laugh every time the ride dropped. It was like being in a plane, but even better!

As quickly as the ride began, it was already over, and everyone was standing with shaky legs as they all got off the ride.

“Ok that was the best ride I’ve ever been on. Bob wins!” Phoenix exclaimed as the group made their way back into the park.

“I should be offended, but she’s right. That was amazing! By far the best ride of the day!” Hangman agreed as Bradley suddenly burst out laughing.

“Guys look at the picture!” He said as he looked at his phone.

Everyone crowded around Bradley and all began laughing as they saw the picture that had been taken of them on the ride. Everyone was making some kind of emotion–Rooster, Hangman, and Phoenix screaming, Ice, Maverick, Payback, and Fanboy laughing–everyone except Bob. Bob was simply sitting with a smile on his face, looking as content as ever.

“Dude how were you not screaming?” Hangman asked incredulously.

“Or at least laughing out of fear! That was my response.” Payback added.

Bob shrugged, “Just felt like a nice bouncy ride to me. The dropping was almost relaxing. Like nice plane turbulence.”

The group all couldn’t help but chuckle. Leave it to Bob to always be full of surprises.

“Ok it’s just after 9 now, so we have just under half an hour until the fireworks. Should we head back over to the other park to get situated?” Maverick asked after checking his phone.

Everyone nodded, before they all made their way back to the Disneyland Park where they headed back down Main Street to get a front and center view of the upcoming show.

“Wait guys, look!” Fanboy suddenly exclaimed, making everyone stop walking, and pointed behind him as the group turned around.

There, only a few feet away, taking pictures with park guests, was the famed character himself, Mickey Mouse.

“Come on, we have to get a picture! It’s Mickey!” Fanboy

“Dude, you can’t be serious.” Payback groaned as Fanboy shook his head, and began ushering the group over to the character.

“Nope. Come on. We’re all getting one. He is my namesake after all!” He said as Maverick laughed.

He and Ice watched as all of the Daggers walked over to stand with Mickey as the cast member got ready to take a picture of them all.

“Wait! Mav and Ice have to be in this!” Phoenix suddenly said, noticing the older aviators standing away from the group.

“Yeah come on guys! It’s our family photo” Bob added as the rest of the Daggers made noises of agreement.

Ice turned to Maverick who shrugged, before both heading over to join the group, standing on both sides of Bradley, who smiled proudly in between his Dad and Pops.

“Ok, everyone say Disneyland!” The cast member announced cheerfully.

The group smiled as their picture was taken with Mickey, before making their way back to where they were standing for the fireworks, making it just in time. All of the Daggers seemed to be in high spirits as they waited for the show to begin.

Bradley couldn’t help but smile as he heard the music start and the castle start to illuminate with both different colors and scenes from various Disney movies. The Daggers watched both the projections on the castle as well as the fireworks that began to light up the night sky.

“I forgot how much I love these fireworks!” Payback exclaimed.

“Disney just does it in such a way that it does feel magical.” Fanboy laughed at his own cheesy statement.

“Hey,” Phoenix said, turning to Hangman and showing him her phone, a small smile on her face, “Here.”

“What’s this?” Hangman asked as he tried to figure out what he was looking at.

“Magic key passes. Or the season passes to Disneyland.”

“So you finally admit you had fun today and can’t get enough!” Hangman said smugly as Phoenix rolled her eyes.

“Look closer.”

“Wait, you got two. Why?” Hangman questioned as he noticed she had indeed bought two tickets.

Phoenix laughed, “Because you’re right, I truly did have a lot of fun today, and I loved hearing about how much it meant to you. So , I got these for the two of us, so we can come back here and you can show me more of what makes this place so special.” Phoenix replied as she watched Hangman break out in a wide grin as he held out an arm to her.

“Thanks Phoe.” He said softly, bringing her in for a hug.

Phoenix nodded with a genuine smile, giving his hand a squeeze before heading over to where Bob was standing.

“Having fun?” Jake turned to see Bradley standing next to him with a small smirk on his face.

“A very magical time.” Jake laughed as Bradley grinned.

“It really is good to be back here. So many good rides and memories.”

Jake nodded, “I am sorry about the tea cups though. Didn’t realize it would make you spew.”

Bradley laughed, “ Yeah well, those things are stupid anyway. But seriously it’s fine. Pops took good care of me.” He added, nodding to where Maverick and Ice were standing, arms wrapped around each other, before giving them a warm smile.

“I’m glad.” Jake smiled as well, “Must be nice to be here with them. To make up for that lost time.”

“It really is.” Bradley said softly, “It’s also nice being here with you…and everyone of course. Being able to make some new memories with my favorite people.”

“Yeah,” Jake coughed, “Phoenix actually bought the two of us season passes so we can come back.”

Bradley’s face dropped to that of mock disappointment.

“What? No fair, I want to come.” He whined.

Jake laughed, “Well you’re always welcome to. Although I’m not sure how much luck you’ll have convincing Tash to buy another pass, so it may be coming from your wallet.”

Bradley chuckled, “Fine by me. As long as we can have another day like this. Minus the puking of course.”

Jake grinned, “Absolutely.”

Bradley stood smiling at the other aviator. He shyly moved his hand so it was brushed up against Jake’s. Jake felt the touch, and laced his fingers with the other aviator’s. Bradley couldn’t help but blush at the contact as he moved a bit closer. No more words were said between the two of them as they continued to watch the bright lights, the two of them simply content with one another.

Maverick grinned as he watched his son make a move on the other aviator. Although he hadn’t actually talked to Bradley about his clear and obvious feelings for Jake, he had known for the past couple months that there had to be something between the two. But of course, taking after Maverick’s own heart, Bradley tended to be a bit oblivious sometimes when it came to flirtation from Jake. It was nice though to see the two of them having each other. Maverick knew from the minute he met Jake Seresin that he was a good guy. Maybe needed some help along the way, but then again, who didn’t? Overall, Maverick was glad to see just how happy Bradley truly looked. It wasn’t something that he had been able to see in well over a decade, but it seemed like now Bradley was back to his old self.

“Reminding you of someone?” Maverick turned to see Ice smirking at him.

“How so?” Maverick raised an eyebrow.

Ice laughed, “Oh just the painful flirtation and shyness before actually realizing you have actual feelings. Not to mention the obliviousness.”

Maverick scoffed, “I wasn’t that blind, was I?”

Ice rolled his eyes, “No, it only took about a year of flirting for you to finally catch on.”

Maverick laughed as he leaned against his husband, “Well I’m glad I did.”

Ice smiled, “Me too.”

“So can you finally admit you still love Disney?” Maverick grinned.

Ice sighed, a soft smile on his face as he had his husband next to him, and watched his son just in front of him, “Yeah, I think I can. It really is a place where some of the best memories are made, and the fact that I get to experience it with both you and Bradley makes me feel put back together.”

Maverick smirked,

“Mission accomplished.”

Ice rolled his eyes, but smiling as Maverick brought his face forward for a kiss. They separated, before looking up at the rest of the fireworks and wondering what would be next to come.

Once the fireworks had finished, all the Daggers surprisingly seemed ready to leave as they had been there the entire day. Ice and Maverick couldn’t help but secretly be relieved when Bradley suggested they all head out for the night. They had forgotten how tiring Disneyland was, even if they didn’t have to chase around a little kid this time.

“How are there still kids here?” Hangman asked as the group began walking out of the park, “I’m exhausted.”

“I’m definitely going to crash in the car. Someone’s going to have to wake me up once we get back.” Payback added.

Sure enough, only a few minutes after everyone was loaded back up into the van and Ice had just gotten on the highway, he looked in his rearview mirror to see all six Daggers fast asleep.

“Who knew all it took was a day at Disneyland to tire out six adult naval aviators?” Maverick chuckled softly as he watched Bradley lean his head on Hangman’s shoulder.

“I’m guessing with the busy day we had, they’re all going to sleep well tonight.” Ice responded.

“So am I.” Maverick added, “I’m getting old for this shit.”

Ice made a noise of mock surprise, “Did you, Mr. ‘Please I still have youthful energy’ finally admit you’re old?” he smirked, imitating his husband as Maverick rolled his eyes.

“Shut up. You’re older than I am.”

Ice laughed, “Only by a couple months.”

“Still counts.” Maverick smiled as he and Ice fell into comfortable silence as they headed home.

By the time Ice finally pulled up to the house, everyone was slowly waking up. Maverick offered to let the rest of the Daggers (besides Bradley) crash on the couches, but they all decided to head to their own homes for the night. Which honestly Ice couldn’t help but be a bit relieved at. While he loved the Dagger squad just as much as Maverick, he also loved being able to come home to an empty house with just his husband and kid.

Ice, Maverick, and Bradley tiredly headed into the house, as Bradley announced he was heading right to bed, once again thanking his Dad and Pops for the wonderful day.

“Wait kiddo, before you go to bed, I have something for you.” Ice smiled as he grabbed the Disneyland bag he had been slyly carrying throughout most of the night.

“Wait when did you buy something?” Maverick raised an eyebrow. “I was with you the whole time. I didn’t see anything.”

Ice smirked, “I have my ways.”

“What is it?” Bradley asked, coming over as Ice handed him the bag.

He looked inside and couldn’t help but beam. It was a stuffed Pluto dog. He remembered Ice having gotten him one similar when he had been a kid during their first ever trip to Disneyland, but it had unfortunately since been lost.

“I know it’s cheesy, and you’re far too old for this, but I couldn’t help but think it would be cute! Something to remember our first Disneyland day in many years.” Ice said as Bradley laughed.

“I love it. Thank you Pops.” He said, as Ice brought him in for another hug.

“I’m glad kiddo.”

“Thanks again for coming today.” Bradley said softly into Ice’s shoulder.

“I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

Bradley smiled as he separated from Ice before giving Maverick another hug. He once again bid goodnight to the two of them before tiredly heading upstairs, the stuffed dog in hand.

Maverick smiled as he watched the younger aviator head up the stairs, and turned to his husband with a warm smile.

“I’m glad he’s home.”

“Me too.” Ice sighed, “I didn’t know if we would be able to easily fall back into place after so many years of pain and distance, but now that we have, things finally feel–”

“Complete.” Maverick finished as Ice nodded.

Because Maverick knew he felt the same. The feeling of his heart swelling everytime Bradley called him Dad, or the pure adoration and pride in seeing Bradley in a jet, and even the warmth and protectiveness anytime he hugged his son. It was a feeling that he had been missing for the past decade. All the nights spent crying to his husband and feeling a hole in his heart were replaced by sheer love and happiness, which now that he had it again, he never wanted to let it go.

“I’m going to go make sure the hangar’s locked up. I’ll meet you upstairs.” Maverick said as Ice nodded, kissing his husband’s temple before heading upstairs.

Maverick went out to the hangar where he locked up for the night, before walking back up to the house and shutting off the lights downstairs before heading upstairs to his and Ice’s room. He was surprised however to find the bed empty as well as the bathroom, with Ice nowhere to be seen. He hadn’t been downstairs when Maverick had gone back inside the house, so where was he?

Maverick headed down the hall towards Bradley’s room, stopping when he heard the sound of a voice singing softly. He peeked his head in and absolutely melted at the sight. Bradley was fast asleep in bed, with the Pluto plush tucked in his arms, and there sitting on the edge of the bed beside him was Ice, running his hand through Bradley’s hair as he softly sang.

Come stop your crying
It will be alright
Just take my hand
Hold it tight
I will protect you
From all around you
I will be here
Don't you cry

For one so small
You seem so strong
My arms will hold you
Keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can't be broken
I will be here don't you cry

'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more

Maverick recognized the song being “You’ll be in My Heart” from Tarzan, and grinned. Bradley had already been a teenager when it had come out, so the movie itself wasn’t one of the all time favorites in the house. But, Ice had always been a big Phil Collins fan, so he wasn’t surprised that this would’ve become one of his favorite Disney songs. And as Maverick listened to the lyrics he could understand why Ice was particularly drawn to the song right now, especially after today. Ice had always been a good singer, even if he’d never reveal it to anyone other than Maverick or Bradley. But many times over the years when Maverick was either deployed or Bradley simply wanted the comfort of his Pops, Ice would sing the kid to sleep. Bradley being lulled by his gentle voice.

Even all these years later and over a foot taller, Maverick couldn’t help but smile at the fact that Bradley still managed to look so young when he was all curled up and asleep. Looking at him now, instead of seeing the grown aviator who had saved his life only a few months back, Maverick couldn’t help but still see the baby boy who he had held in the hospital, not knowing that he was going to become such an integral part of his life only a couple years later. He’d never be able to put into words just how grateful he was that he had his son back in his life, and each day he could see just how much Bradley was relieved to have his Dad and Pops back as well.

Maverick also couldn’t help but beam at just how soft Ice still was with Bradley even after all this time. Never could he have imagined that his TOP GUN rival who he initially thought always seemed to have some stick up his ass would turn out to be one of the most important people in his life as well as another parental figure in Bradley’s life. Even after Carole had died, Maverick had constantly questioned why Ice would choose to stay with him, knowing that he came with this much baggage. But seeing the adoration in his husband’s eyes each time he had looked at the kid made him realize how Ice always saw Bradley as his son, and loved him just as much as Maverick did. And no matter how old he got, both Ice and Mav would always see him as their kid.

Maverick smiled as he crept away from the door to give Ice his time alone with Bradley. Last thing he needed was for the younger aviator to suddenly wake up to find both his dads watching him while he slept. Even though Maverick would admit that he’d occasionally peek into Bradley’s room at night, just reminding himself that his son was in fact home. Parts of it still didn’t seem real.

The idea that only a few months ago, Maverick would’ve still been wondering what Bradley was doing, and worrying that he was alright, having not spoken to him in fifteen years. But now, here he was tucked in bed after spending a day at the Happiest Place on Earth with his friends and family, and would probably wake up to his Pops making breakfast while his Dad made plans for how he was going to push the Daggers the following day at training, before asking Bradley if he wanted to take a ride in the P-51 later.

He smiled as he suddenly got a text from Fanboy who had forwarded him the picture they all took with Mickey Mouse. Looking at his family which had since been repaired which now included his five new “adopted” kids, the only thing that Maverick could think of as he headed down the hallway back to his room was,

It’s a small world after all.

Notes:

I hope everyone enjoyed!

I've been working on a super long TGM fic for the past year (over 70k so far, and still going), that I'm going to wait to post until I'm finally done with it! When that will be, I have absolutely no idea!

But until then, I also have many cute and angsty one shots/shorter stories planned, so there's definitely more to come!!

Until next time!! And look for me lurking in the kudos section of other TGM fics hehehehe
