Glowing Petals

Summary:

Lee has been working on a spell of his own for weeks, and it keeps failing.

Work Text:

His hands were covered by a green glow, and his fingertips felt warm– yes! It would work!

Lee’s eyes shone with excitement, ready to see the finished product; he had been working on that spell for weeks, it should work… but it didn’t, just like it had happened the previous thirty, forty attempts. He had lost count of them after some days.

He knew it was a pointless thing– Neji had scowled when he had told him of his idea, and Tenten had just chuckled, calling him a ‘hopeless romantic’ and suggesting giving up. But he refused!

Magic didn’t come to him as easily as it did for others, and it was only thanks to his never ending effort that he had been accepted by Gai as an apprentice. He couldn’t disappoint him! And so, Lee had decided to hide away in the forest close to his home, a clearing where the chirping of birds would help him focus on his self-imposed task.

He tried again, and again, and the sun began setting on the sky. There was still light outside, so the boy decided to go on… until he heard footsteps nearby, yet Lee still tried using his spell and try to make it work.

“Oh, Lee! I wasn’t expecting to see you here!” a familiar voice said, and soon one of his friends appeared from behind him– Sakura… the one he was doing magic for. She had just become a magic apprentice the previous year, yet there was nothing she couldn’t heal with the usual chants of medicinal magic. She was awesome…

She didn’t know about his forming gift, though. A blush appeared on his face as she sat down by his side, peeking over his shoulder to check what he was working on. The glow on his hands became stronger, warmer than his cheeks somehow.

“Sakura! I… I am working on something special,” he explained, not willing to separate his palms in an attempt to keep focusing his magic there. “But I have been trying for almost a month, and I can not manage to do it…”

“I don’t know anyone that works harder than you, Lee. I’m sure your spell will work sooner or later!” the girl said, her head resting on his shoulder and making his cheeks feel hotter in response.

Her smile and words were genuine, he could tell. Lee felt a proud grin appearing on his face, and– the glow on his hands disappeared from a moment to another, making him feel disappointed for a second before looking down…

… only to see a beautiful pink flower, which glowed just like any crystal you could find in the deepest caverns of Konoha. It was almost as blinding as the sun.

“It worked! Sakura, it worked!” Lee announced, feeling tears threatening to fall from his eyes by how happy he felt. Before his companion could reply, he carefully offered the flower to her, looking away at the same time. “I… I wanted to make it for you, Sakura. It is okay if you do not want it, and I will understand.”

Giggles filled the air, and for a moment the boy felt fear – until he felt a pair of lips placing themselves on his cheek, a hand holding his own. His face burnt once again, almost as if someone had turned up a bonfire right in front of him.

“Why wouldn’t I want it, Lee? It’s beautiful, and you made it for me. Nobody had ever done something so cute for me!” Sakura replied, and he could see a smile on her face now. She placed the flower behind her ear and Lee felt himself grinning– magic truly was unpredictable!
