Work Text:
Getou Suguru knows his hair is getting too long.
Everyone keeps telling him to cut it, it’ll be less of a burden that way. So one evening he finally decides to give in.
But with the scissors poised over a thick wad, he pauses. He likes the long hair. Likes the way it fits into buns so easily. The way he can get it out of his face, or cover the emotions showing on his face, whenever he wants to.
And deep down in the back of his mind, he likes the way it reminds him of him. Being in high school, tying his hair up really quickly before opening the door to see the cheerful face of his partner in crime.
He never knew what he would face. Every single time they hung out it was an adventure. Whether it was skydiving or trying to find the best sushi restaurant in the city, he knew that with Gojo Satoru, he could get his mind off of his everyday problems.
Plus, it was the only time he ever remembers feeling truly happy.
Those moments are suddenly shattered by the others creeping their way into his memory. The blood. The sound of screaming. And finally, the betrayal. He sees the only one who he ever truly loved vanish in a puff of smoke.
Fast forward several years later. He’s greeted with those same eyes and enthusiastic grin. They’ve both gotten more powerful. A war ensues, the two in the center of it all. He barely makes it out alive.
The last face he sees before blacking out, slumped against a wall, is Satoru’s. And suddenly he’s hurled back into high school, replaying every single memory he can of the two of them.
He thinks he’s going to die. Through his half shut eyes, he sees a flash of purple. A soft “ Goodbye” as he slowly succumbs to the darkness.
But he had woken up in a hospital. He blinked as two people came into view, and it took him a second to recognize them.
“ You didn’t kill me after all?” were the first words out of his mouth.
Satoru stood up. “ Believe me. That’s what everyone wanted me to do. Would’ve solved many of my problems.” The words were slow and quiet.
“ So why didn’t you?”
And he will never be able to forget the next words that came of his mouth. “ I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I loved you too much to be able to do that.”
Before he knows it, his old friend envelops him in a hug, even as he’s sitting right there on a hospital table. The repulsive feeling is forgotten. He’s overtaken by an outpour of comfort and remembrance.
He wants to stay in the place forever, being embraced by this guy forever. It’s embarrassing to think, but this guy just feels like… home.
They end up moving in together, raising a batch of four unruly little kids together. It takes some coaxing and bribery to warm his two girls up to his other boy and girl, but in the end, they manage alright.
But tonight, after tucking all the kids in for bed( it was his turn), he sprawls next to the toilet, grasping the scissors, wondering if he did the right thing.
Because he loves him. And although their ideas about the world are different from each other, he would die for this guy. He doesn’t regret anything.
But in the other hand… he can’t help but feel his dark thoughts rise up every time the two are outside their own world. He feels the urge to murder again.
And in a way, he misses it. That feeling of power. In his own twisted way, he felt like he was changing the world for the better.
What qualifies good and evil anyway?
