Work Text:
At four pm, Jisung comes knocking to ask if he can borrow a pen. At four-fifteen, he needs an eraser. At four twenty-five, Jeongin doesn't wait to hear what the excuse is this time, he just snaps: "What part of 'I need to focus' did you not understand , hyung!?"
Jisung's expression shuts off entirely, he mumbles an apology and shuffles back out slowly, closing the door once it's possible to do so. Jeongin turns back to his studying, a little grumpy but hopefully able to focus now.
Except he can't get Jisung's face out of his mind. The wide eyes, the utter shock written all over his features, the slight tilt to his head, the sadness sinking in as he was shuffling backwards. He was wrong to snap and he knows, but Jisung should have listened when he said he needed to focus to get his studying done for the day.
Yet no matter how he thinks about it, it still makes him feel a little off, that haunting expression. It gets to a point where he snaps out of his thoughts only to realise he's been staring at his wall for ten minutes straight, not doing any studying at all. With a groan and a flick of his hand, he throws his pen onto his notebook and walks out of his room.
At ten past five, he knocks on Jisung's door and pops his head inside. "Hyung," he says, eyes fixing on the back of Jisung's head. He's sitting at his desk but he's got no headphones on, so it's safe to say he can hear him. "I'm getting something to drink. Do you want anything?"
"No, 'm good," is the only response he gets, Jisung not even looking back at him. He stands a bit indecisively in the door opening before eventually moving out of the room again, closing the door. He heads over to the hallway to put on his shoes, but he's not even fully put his foot in the first one when he's turning back around and heading back.
Five-fifteen he knocks on the door again. "Hyung. Come to the corner store with me? I don't want to walk by myself."
There's a longer silence than usual but right when he wonders if Jisung's going to ignore him, the older turns around to look at him. Jisung's eyes are a little red, his hair a little rumpled. Jeongin's heart squeezes in his chest.
"Just ask Hyunjin," Jisung says in a way that would be petulant if his voice didn't carry an undercurrent of badly repressed tears. "You never mind him interrupting your studying."
"Hyung," Jeongin says, trying really hard not to automatically roll his eyes. "I'm asking you. Hyunjin's out anyway. Come on."
Jisung's expression only darkens at his words, though, and Jeongin knows that he needs to rectify this situation immediately. He opens the door further and steps inside of Jisung's room.
"Hyung, don't yell at me, please. I'm sorry. I couldn't focus because I felt bad for snapping at you. Can you please come to the store with me?"
Jisung's mouth closes again, the anger melting from his features though he still looks rather miffed. It's not that Jeongin can fault him the displeasure. He'd not be very happy either if Jisung would snap at him .
"Hyung, come on. Let me try and make it up to you."
There's a brief moment's hesitation left before Jisung nods and pushes his chair back so he can stand. Jeongin waits for him before heading back to the hallway, putting on his shoes properly this time and then heading out with Jisung by his side.
Somehow they make it all the way to the store in silence. Jisung picks whatever he wants, Jeongin chooses his own drink. When he tries to pay for both, Jisung lets him. Then, as they're once again silent on the way back, he eventually speaks.
"I don't favour Hyunjin, you know. He just studies the same thing as me so usually I can ask him a bunch of questions that help me understand things, but I get upset with him too if he interrupts me too often. I didn't mean to get mad at you, but I've been trying to finish this chapter for what feels like forever, so I just-" He trails off, makes a vague hand motion and shrugs.
"You sounded really upset," Jisung agrees, and his voice is softer now, though luckily he doesn't sound on the verge of crying or anything. "I just wanted to ask if you wanted something to drink, actually."
Jeongin's heart squeezes more violently in his chest and he briefly closes his eyes, looking down at the pavement beneath their feet. He doesn't say anything more and neither does Jisung.
They get back to their dorm like that, walking through the door and taking off their shoes. He can tell that Jisung's going to simply head back to his own room, so he reaches for his boyfriend's arm before he can.
"Hyung," he says, tugging on Jisung's wrist to get his attention. It works, at least, and their eyes meet briefly. Jeongin glances away a little awkwardly, but soldiers on bravely, glancing back and then leaning in quick as a viper to press a kiss to Jisung's cheek.
When he pulls back, his cheeks feel aflame, but Jisung's expression is shifting into a small smile and that's definitely worth it.
"I love you," he decides to say as well, which only serves to turn the smile into a very pleased, wider one. "Also Hyunjin hyung doesn't get this," he adds finally, and leans in again to peck Jisung's lips instead.
"Neither do I as far as people know," Jisung protests, though his lingering smile shows he's not actually upset about that part. "You keep denying it ever happens and for some reason everyone believes you over me!"
He can't deny that he feels a little smug about that, but for the sake of the point he's trying to make, he just smiles and squeezes Jisung's wrist gently.
"But you know," he says softly. "I know. We know. I'm really sorry. I couldn't focus because of how sorry I felt, hyung. You're really important to me."
Jisung's expression mellows out, the last bit of his lingering displeasure ebbing away right there and then.
"I know, baby," he says, and Jeongin flushes again at the nickname, but he doesn't pull or even look away this time. "I'm sorry I kept interrupting. I realised I was doing it so I wanted to get you something to drink and then leave you be for real."
"Oh wow," Jeongin says with a grimace. "Way to make me feel even more like an asshole."
His boyfriend's laugh is bright and amused, a hand coming up to gently run a thumb over his pink cheek. "You're not an asshole," Jisung says softly. "Don't say mean things about my boyfriend. I happen to love him a lot and I will fight you over his honour."
Jeongin's still laughing softly when Jisung kisses him in return. For a while after that, no words are spoken at all, but neither does any more studying get done.
