Summary
Despite what her journal would insinuate, Shauna likes being invisible — well, to most people. She doesn’t want to be stared at in the hallways, doesn’t want to be the subject of rumors, doesn’t want to impede on the light shining on others because Shauna has always looked better in the dark, the abstract. The only reputation she’s built for herself is that of the unassuming sidekick, and most of the time it works because when the light is on Jackie, Jackie shines.
So it’s starting to feel a little unnerving for her as she walks through school these days. She can’t help but catch the eyes of Jeff, who she looks away from quickly and avoids at all costs, despite his idiotic insistence on seeking her out. Or Natalie, whose eyes she will let herself linger on, will stare long after Nat has looked away, and usually ends up following her into an empty classroom (or the equipment shed once, but Shauna had knocked over an entire rack of lacrosse sticks with all her enthusiasm; Nat didn’t appreciate having one or two smack her in the head), so she can do a lot more than look.
