He stares up at the ceiling. He knows she’s turned to face him because he can feel her breath on his face smelling like the grape candy he stole for her because it’s her favorite. And it makes him wonder how close she is to him. He’s too afraid to check.
“Why does it matter?” He asks, and hears her sigh.
“I guess it doesn’t…”
She sounds so unbelievably sad that it does something to him. He just knows he can’t stand it.
