Chapter 1: Memories are more fragile than me

Chapter Text

The brown haired girl atop the white sheets of the hospital bed had come to know more about the rhythmic beeps and steady hums of the machinery surrounding her than she knew about herself. She woke up in the unfamiliar setting with no idea why she was there or who she was, it took three doctors to stop her from jumping out the bed and running off. She had gotten into an accident, they explained once she had calmed down. A drunk driver hit her, throwing her into a two month long coma.

Nanashi Mumei. Her name. That was all she had, all she knew about herself. The doctors had finally left her alone after hours of harassing her with checkups and questions, however it didn’t take long for her to hear someone shouting from outside the room.

The voice was so painfully familiar, but brand new at the same time.

The sound of the door creaking open interrupted her thought as brown eyes moved to watch a tall figure step into the room. Mumei’s gaze instantly caught the woman’s blue.. everything? The sapphires seemingly in place of where her eyes should be, the dark tones of blue that made up her hair, the navy jeans covering her long legs. Mumei made note of it all, only realizing she was staring once the woman cleared her throat to speak.

“Uh- hey Mumei- Ah sorry, I should probably introduce myself first,” Her voice seemed weak when she used “introduce”. “My name is Ouro Kronii, we’re- we were good friends.” Kronii gave her a smile, Mumei could tell it was forced.

Mumei gave a disappointed sigh after a long moment of thought “I’m sorry, I don’t remember you.”

Kronii could feel her smile wavering as she heard what she already knew, of course Mumei didn’t remember her, the doctors said she didn’t remember anything. So why did it hurt so bad to hear from Mumei?

“That’s alright, I’m sure a lot of stuff will come back to you with time. Do you mind if I stay for a while?” When Mumei gave her nothing but a shake of her head, Kronii took a seat in the small chair near the bed.

The two talked for several hours, Mumei having many questions and Kronii being more than happy to answer all of them, growing happier every time she got a smile or giggle out of her friend.

One of their conversations was cut short by an alarm ringing throughout the room. Kronii quickly reached into her pocket, pulling out her phone and turning off said alarm with a large frown. She put the phone face down and looked back to Mumei, who was now looking at her with a curious face.

“I had fun talking but visiting times are up real soon, so I’m gonna have to go.” Noticing how quickly Mumei’s face saddened, she added “But I’ll definitely be back tomorrow if you’d like that.”

When Mumei watched her stand up to leave, her heart dropped. Wait. You’re leaving? No- don’t leave. I don’t wanna be alone anymore. It’s so lonely here. She quickly sprung forward, reaching out towards Kronii and half falling off the bed. Kronii’s reflexes were thankfully good enough to catch her before she really fell.

“Wait! Please wait, don't go! Please I’m scared I don’t wanna forget! I don’t wanna forget you.. I don’t wanna forget anymore.” Mumei was in tears at this point, sobbing everything she was holding in right into Kronii’s shoulder as she held her gently.

Kronii could feel her own heart shattering at the sight.

She didn’t let go of Mumei as the girl rambled out her sorrows. Soon finding herself gently running her fingers through Mumei’s long hair, her hands knowing exactly how to flow through it. Kronii had found herself in this position many times, yet this time it felt different. It hurt much more.

Once Mumei had been reduced to just small sobs and hiccups, Kronii looked down at her with a troubled expression before giving a sigh, nodding her head.

“Alright alright, I think I have a few favors I can rely on so they’ll let me stay the night” Kronii lied through her teeth. Faunas gonna give me an earful for lying to her staff. She sighed once again at the thought.

Mumei looked up at her with surprised eyes and a wide happy smile, finally leaning back into the bed, sitting up and grabbing a small notebook by the bedside. Kronii felt much more empty without the girl in her arms, but she sat back down nonetheless, watching as Mumei writes something down the notebook.

“Did the doctors give you that?” Kronii asked.

“Yeah! They told me to write stuff I wanna remember in it, in case I have a memory lapse.” She didn’t look away from the book as she responded.

“What are you writing?”

Mumei looked over at her now, a wide smile plastering her face. “I’ll tell you another time.”
