“Ha!” Tengen laughs louder now. “Don’t you think there’s something special about this town, Kyo? You chose to stay here as well, didn’t you?”
“That’s true.” He ponders what exactly made him settle down here and not in the dozens of other places he had traveled through after he left home. “I guess it was the people. Everyone was so kind and generous, and there just so happened to be a space for me. They welcomed me like I had lived here my whole life.”
“Ah, the people! That’s it!”
“That’s what?”
“People are fascinating, don’t you think?” Tengen’s eyes wander, a wistful air about them. “All of them so different from one another, wonderful and kind and terrible and cruel and everything in between! You could travel the earth for eternity and never know them all, always finding something new and surprising!” He speaks with a passion Kyojuro hasn’t heard from him before, like he’s speaking straight from the core of his heart, taking it and holding it out for the world to see. “But something ties them all together, creates bonds that last no matter the distance or time between. Rivalries and friendships over generations, hatred and love so deep it stirs the soul!”
