The woman and Beatrice were of the few in the coffee shop who stayed still and silent despite the news flashing on the TV, pondering: the world as they knew it would end in 30 hours to be exact.
Across the table, the woman sighed. She put her laptop away and left her backpack on the seat beside her. She strolled towards Beatrice with a smile on her lips. She extended a hand for Beatrice to shake. "Ava," the woman said.
There was a noticeable tremble on Beatrice's hands, but the woman's were firm and tender at the same time. She squeezed as Beatrice said her name.
“Beatrice," she repeated and swallowed, eyes brightening and watering as if the name had tasted almost too sweet for her. "I suggest we spend the rest of our lives together if you'd like, but there is a request - just one - I need to make." Beatrice quirked a brow, feeling her palm gather sweat. "May we kiss just before the world ends?”
