They ran down the hill quickly, hand in hand.
If Dolores married Mariano now, without any prior notice or preparations, it would be quick, rushed, near-scandalous, frowned upon - but official. He couldn't marry Isabela, or anyone else. Their families would be upset, but they wouldn't be able to do anything, and they would come around eventually.
"Padre!" Mariano called. "We need you to marry us!"
The priest looked confused as the two of them came to a breathless halt before him. Addressing Mariano, he said, "Weren't you just getting engaged to her cousin Isabela yesterday?"
"Sí, but that was yesterday."
