Summary
It was already an open secret among colleagues that Tom cared about the Potter boy. Given the obvious situation, this was well-understood and respected by all, as no one else dared to face the facts and step up. The Dursleys were wealthy and had great influence in the town, not to mention their generous donations to the school, which didn’t make it any easier to deal with the matter. The system, once again, had failed.
Tom was aware that he had long gone beyond what was considered permissible.
