Work Text:

Grimmchild stared back and forth between the entry written in the journal to the companion next to it—visibly confused.

They had taken a break from their adventures and were currently resting at the bench within the desolate town of Dirthmouth, Ghost scribbled onto a Journal gifted to it by the Hunter while it's companion, Grimmchild watched.

"Fully grown Vessel, carrying the plague's heart within its body."

Underneath it was a drawn image of that towering creature locked up in that place, alike to a similar more healthier thing which they fought together in Godhome.

It's companion—Ghost too was a vessel it realized a while ago, what it did not understand however is that why was the locked one so large?

Is its companion a child like it? Is it yet ungrown?

It remembers seeing that large figure in its minute form, an appearance much like Ghost next to that cruel; hateful light within the palace of saws and thorns. Vessels can grow very big it learned, yet why did its companion remain unchanged?

They were surely born at the same time.

It did not understand.

Do "Vessels" grow differently?

Perhaps Ghost is like Grimmchild, it needs something to grow. For grimmchild it's flames, what then is it for Ghost?

Does it consume void? It swims in that lake which it keeps Grimmchild away from yet it drinks none, only floats and swims. It does not have a mouth to drink, can it drink from the eyes? They are hollow things.

Does it perhaps consume light? If so if they beat and eat the heart of the infection would Ghost grow then? To the same towering heights as the Locked One?

Does it need something unknown to it? If so, how does one find something one doesn't know?

Can Ghost even grow?

These thoughts swirled around its head giving it a migraine, it just could not make sense of it's companion and it's kin.

One of them could speak and cry just fine, but that was only one. It was clear she was an exception. She was also small, but taller than Ghost, she claims she lacked crucial emptiness, the darkness in that sad-scary place. So perhaps that was why she was small, she takes more after the Cruel Light?

It's mother was cold and mean but also very large, like the Locked One but unlike the Locked One and the talking one—she was one of many twisting roots.

For Grimmchild it was very simple, It would grow up to look like it's father, yet Ghosts family looked nothing alike except having pale shells.

It tried to make sense of these pieces but it simply did not understand.

It hung on the bench next to Ghost, banging it's tail in frustration. This agitation finally caught Ghosts attention—who turned towards the frustrated critter.

It had just finished adding it's own little notes to the Hunters Journal. It looked towards Grimmchild then onto where it was directing it's Ire only for it to be the image of its sibling.

Ghost titled its head to the side, seeming confused.

It showed no animosity towards them before, why does it do now?

Notes:

I thought of making this a multi chapter episodic fic about different aspects of the story but I don't know how AO3 works...

Once I do figure out however it will turn depressing real quick I assure you
