Would you still love me if I was a worm?

Summary:

Phil asks an unexpected question.

Work Text:

The day at the Dan and Phil house had been oddly busy. After grocery shopping, decorating the house, and a surprise dinner with friends, the two of them had finally settled into bed for the night. Well, if one A.M is still considered 'night.'

Dan had himself propped up on some pillows as he mindlessly scrolled on his phone. Phil was doing the same, laying on his side with his back facing Dan. The silence was comforting. Every once in a while, they would send each other a TikTok even though they were less than a foot apart from the other.

Just being in each other's presence was enough.

Breaking the silence, Phil rolled onto his back and sat his phone on his chest.

"Dan?" Phil asked, staring at the ceiling.

"What?" Dan didn't look up from his phone.

"Would you still love me if I was a worm?"

The question popped Dan out of his endless-scrolling trance. He looked up and furrowed his brows in confusion. There was no right way to answer this.

He contemplated about a thousand different answers before finally saying,

"In what context? Have you been turned into a worm? Or… are you just… a worm?"

He tried to contain his giggles.

Phil looked over at him with expecting eyes.

"I dunno…just a worm…"

Dan stared at Phil with a fond, yet partially exasperated smirk. This was the person he is spending the rest of his life with.

"Well…I guess, if you were just a worm, probably not." Dan said.

"What?" Phil sounded offended. "Why not!?"

Dan's voice went up an octave as he tried to explain himself.

"I wouldn't know it was you! Can you imagine if I just picked up a worm off the fucking sidewalk and chose it to be my friend?"

Phil laughed, his tongue poking out between his teeth. Dan did have a point.

Phil sighed and said, "Okay, okay. Fine."

"Thank you!" Dan said, grinning.

Phil sat himself on his elbows. This conversation was far from over.

"What if…" Phil paused, taking a second to giggle. "What if a wizard transformed me into a worm?"

Dan threw his head back and cackled.

"A wizard!?"

"Yes!"

"For God sake," Dan shook his head. "I suppose, yes, if a wizard turned you into a worm, I would still love you."

"Good." Phil smirked. He looked way too amused with himself.

Dan leaned over and gave Phil a kiss on the forehead.

"Goodnight, worm boy."

Dan rolled over and turned off the lamp and settled into bed.

The silence lasted less than a minute.

"Would you make me my own terrarium?" Phil asked, "What color worm would I be?"

Dan stayed silent.

Phil continued, "So, you wouldn't make me my own terrarium? That's really mean, Dan."

Dan spoke without moving, "I would put you in one of our plants. And cover you in dirt. Goodnight!"

"Wow. You never answered what kind of worm I'd be."

"An annoying one."

"Hey!"

Dan snorted a laugh. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

"I love you."

"I love you, too."
