Work Text:
Obi Wan stared blankly down at the dimmed holoprojector. It seemed absurd. Grievous was dead, negotiations had been opened between the Republic and the CIS, and the 212th had been ordered to remain on Utapau until further notice. The droid forces on the surface had already been mopped up, as had the forces in orbit around other planetary bodies in the system, so Obi Wan had put them on the lowest level of alertness he could without putting them on leave and they were taking advantage of that. There was a ruckus happening outside of the Command Tent and the sheer amount of joy, gently grief tinged in places, was going right to Obi Wan’s head.
But in the Command Tent he was in a bubble of solitude. He had had to take a call with the Council and had sent the rest of the Command Team off to have fun.
There was a rustle of fabric and Obi Wan looked up to see Cody, half stripped of his armour, ducking into the tent.
“Obi Wan.” He said, and his smile was brilliant like a sun. Obi Wan crossed the tent in three long strides and pulled him into a kiss.
“Hi.” Cody said, slightly breathless, when they finally pulled apart.
“Hi.” Obi Wan said, beaming at him. He felt a little punch drunk from all the emotions he was feeling, both his own and others. He had thrown his shields up as far as as he was comfortable putting them, but the emotions were so strong they were leaking through anyways.
“The men want you to come celebrate with up.” Cody said.
“Just the men?” Obi Wan asked, raising an eyebrow. Cody laughed.
“I want you to come celebrate too. Ghost was just incredibly insistent that I come find out if you were done with your meeting. Besides, I wasn’t sure if just me would be enough to get you out of here.”
“I would follow you anywhere.” Obi Wan said earnestly, and Cody’s smile widened.
He took one of Obi Wan’s hands and dragged him out of the tent.
Every vod they passed who noticed them called out joyous greetings as they passed and Obi Wan did his best to acknowledge all of them.
Ghost had started a fire and Drowsy was tuning her treble viola when Obi Wan and Cody arrived.
They were quickly pulled into the circle, and when Helix managed to pull the fact that Obi Wan had not eaten anything since before they made landfall on Utapau out of him, food was foisted upon him. Yeast and Nada had clearly been at work alongside Tool, their quartermaster, to distribute foodstuffs among the celebrating vode. Alcohol had also been distributed, and Obi Wan pretended not to know who that might have come from.
Drowsy started to play, and it wasn’t long before almost everyone was dancing. She had started with a traditional Mandalorian dance, one that involved a lot of stomping, and the ground was shaking with it.
She had transitioned songs several times by the time Obi Wan finished the quick meal that Helix had shoved into his hands before being pulled off by Longshot to dance. Cody, who had also been pulled away, returned as Obi Wan set his plate down and held out his hand.
“Master Kenobi, would you give me the pleasure of a dance?” He asked. Obi Wan grasped his hand and let Cody pull him to his feet.
“It would bring me no greater joy Commander.” Obi Wan said, and let Cody lead him out into the makeshift dance floor. Drowsy had been joined by Butler, Obi Wan’s aide de camp, with his Double Viol, and Birdie, one of their pilots, with her box piano, and when Drowsy caught Obi Wan’s eye, she led them into a new tune.
Obi Wan laughed aloud as he recognized it. It was the romance theme from one of the many holoflicks they had watched in the largest rec room on the Negotiator over the course of the war, and it just so happened to be one of Cody’s favourites.
“Did you ask for this specifically my dear?” Obi Wan asked, leaning in close as they waltzed over the uneven ground, the vode around them pairing up to do the same.
“Who, me?” Cody asked, pulling his best impression of Anakin and Ahsoka’s puppy dog eyes, and Obi Wan laughed again. “I did. I like it, and I’ve always wanted to dance to it with you.”
“I love you so much.” Obi Wan said, and Cody’s eyes crinkled in the same way they always did whenever Obi Wan said it, like it surprised him but in a good way.
“I love you too.” He whispered, and on they spun, like so many celestial spheres, in orbit with each other and the vode they danced with as they would be for many years to come.
