Releasing their webs, Miles and Gwen landed near their usual spot on the Williamsburg Bank Building. Strolling around so that they had their favorite upside down view of the city, the two of them pulled themselves to a sitting position, taking a moment to admire the scene in front of them.
“This never gets old, does it?” Miles asked as the two removed their masks.
“Never,” Gwen concurred. The two of them then scooted together, putting an arm around each other’s shoulders and pulling each other closer.
“So, ten years ago, before we even knew that the multiverse was a thing, you never could have imagined anything like this either, right?” Miles questioned.
Gwen let out a huff through her nose.
“What, that I’d be married to a guy from another universe and us taking turns spending time living in each other’s worlds?” Gwen asked. “You mean you didn’t have that on your bucket list one day too?”
Miles chuckled, but before he could reply, he felt a buzz on his phone, pulling it out to discover that it was his mom, having sent a picture of her and his dad with their eight-month old.
“Oh wow, they actually got Aaron to smile in a picture for once!” Miles noted. “I’m going to have to ask them how they pulled that one off.”
“Yeah, we really need all the tips we can get,” Gwen agreed. “They look so happy with him. You think they’ll hold him hostage to keep us from going back to my universe?”
“I wouldn’t put it past them,” Miles replied.
“How do you think your parents have been handling the whole multiverse commuting thing anyway?” she asked.
“Eh, okay I guess,” Miles replied. “I mean, these are the same people that didn’t want me to go to school in New Jersey, so compared to that, I think they’re doing okay. How about your dad?”
“He’s okay, I think,” he said. “I’ve been really lucky that he’s always given me the freedom to explore things and do what I feel like I need to do. I know it’s not easy for him either, but I he respects and trusts me, so I know he supports us.”
“He really does seem like the most chill guy in the multiverse,” Miles remarked. “Well, except for maybe the first few times he and I were face to face.”
“He always loved you, and don’t let him fool you into thinking otherwise,” Gwen assured him, climbing into Miles’s lap. He put his arms around her as she clutched at his arms, the two of them relaxing peacefully for several wordless moments.
“Miles,” Gwen spoke up again, “can I ask you something?”
“Of course,” Miles assured her.
“Do you think we’re handling things okay?” she asked. “I mean, all this travelling back and forth in the multiverse, balancing our responsibilities to each world as both our identities, plus having a kid in the mix now… I guess I just second guess things sometimes, you know, about if there isn’t something that we can be doing better to help balance everything.”
“I don’t think we’ll ever find a real balance,” Miles conceded. “I think about that a lot too; you’re right, our lives are very…busy, for sure, but I wouldn’t want to be in this with anyone else, as long as you feel the same way?”
Gwen rotated her head, glancing up longingly at him. She reached up, placing her hand on his cheek and drawing him in for a deep kiss.
“I knew what I was signing up for,” she said, “and I would do it all over again if I had to.”
She then turned back out into the city, leaning up against him more as the two of them relaxed into one another, enjoying the gorgeous, unique view they had of the city around them.
