    Summary

She was willing to let a laugh slip through her teeth in response to my joke. The only one unafraid, even when nobody backed her up. I knew from that moment that she was a real one. The one person brave enough, interested enough to talk to me after the teacher cut me up. We were out of place together – we always were. A dark room with the quiet shutter of the film – and somnolent classmates. That’s where we swapped words about my joke that wasn’t funny, but smart. I know her – light and warm - anywhere she smiles would be.

When you know, you know. I could still hear him though, ‘Not quite there yet, nephew. You gotta play the game right.’

I know that too. He would say to me that the bag was being fumbled. And at this point, I don’t know which of the two of us is fumbling it – the girl struggling to share her secrets or the boy willing to give her as many turns as it took. Forever if it came to that.

I want her to know for a minute that she could let that breath out.

Cuz I see her holding it.

I see her glossed over eyes, baring her teeth, saying nothing with all those words she’s trying to distract us all with…

Gwen could fool the world if she wanted to, but she’d never get that past me.
