Work Text:
** 1# Shinigami **
It was quiet.
The other detectives were gone, Yuma and Desuhiko had no idea where they actually went but that didn't matter, the only thing that did matter right now was the fact that the two of them could finally be alone for a moment. Their shoulders and legs were touching, Desuhiko had his palm resting on his thigh and held Yuma's in it, both of their hands were slightly sweaty but neither of them dared to point that out.
It had only been a short time since they had said their true feelings out loud and there was still an extremely nervous atmosphere lingering around them. When Desuhiko first mentioned that they should kiss and officially start their relationship, he looked really determined and had a shit-eating grin on his face but now, he looked like he'd rather sink into the ground when the moment of the promised kiss actually came.
Their grip tightened even more and Yuma nervously looked at him, Desuhiko's cheeks were perhaps even redder than usual and when the other man felt eyes on him, he looked back at the slightly shorter detective.
"Are you... sure you want to do this, Yuma?"
It still surprised him how Desuhiko actually managed to restrain himself when it came to potential partners. Yuma certainly wouldn't have let him touch his lips the first time they met, but the more he got to know him, the more he realized that Desuhiko was actually kinda harmless. He would never do anything Yuma didn't want him to and when he revealed his true feelings about the other detective, the smaller man couldn't believe his ears.
He also liked Desuhiko, but if the disguising detective never confessed, it would most likely remain a secret he would take to his grave.
"Y-Yeah..."
Desuhiko slowly began to approach him and Yuma would have closed his eyes if he hadn't suddenly heard a voice behind him, which painfully pulled him back to reality.
"I can't believe you want to give your first kiss to such a disgusting worm! Have you lost your mind, Master?!"
Yuma immediately looked at the spot next to Desuhiko where Shinigami floated in the air. She looked seriously mad, her Master knew very well how much she hated Desuhiko, but that didn't mean she could control what Yuma did with his mouth at all.
"Leave me alone, Shinigami! I like Desuhiko and it's just a kiss! I trust him."
"I was surprised to find out that men are also in your sights, but Desuhiko?! Don't you want me to erase your memories again? I think you'll feel healthier if you forget about this idiot, kyahaha!"
"No, I don't want that at all!"
Shinigami didn't speak anymore and after a while Yuma realized why, Desuhiko was looking at him with confusion in his eyes and suddenly sat a little further away.
It wasn't until a few seconds later that the detective realized that he had accidentally said his last words out loud, surely creating a situation where it seemed like Yuma changed his mind.
"I-I mean... I... God, I didn't mean to-"
"H-hey, it's cool, man! I don't want to force you into anything, it was my idea anyway."
He mentally cursed himself and when he heard Shinigami laughing with joy, he wanted to punch her even though he couldn't. How the hell was he supposed to handle this situation? He didn't want Desuhiko to get it all wrong!
"No, Desuhiko, I'm sorry, I want to kiss you, really, I just..."
I was just talking to the Goddess of Death that haunts me and with who you flirted until you completely forgot she existed. Yeah, maybe it was better if Desuhiko had a different idea about what happened.
Feeling a hand on his shoulder, Desuhiko sat closer to him again, after seeing that Yuma had calmed down, and tried to show him one of his sweet smiles. But Yuma could feel the disappointment in him.
"Dude, don't apologize! I don't want you to do anything you're not comfortable with, okay? And I... I don't want to mess this up. So let's kiss another time!"
But Yuma doubted that there would be a situation in the near future where he would be able to kiss Desuhiko without the presence of Shinigami reminding him how much she disapproved of it.
Until then, he'll just have to learn to ignore her ominous presence.
** 2# Halara **
Raindrops fell on the steel structure that Desuhiko and Yuma were currently standing under. The rookie was leaning against it while the full-fledged detective stood just a step away from him, looking into his eyes and smiling as he saw that Yuma was much more confident today.
It will work out now, for sure. Shinigami was watching them but Yuma wasn't listening to her. Desuhiko had his eyes on the submarine and if anyone wanted to disturb them, they would have plenty of time to act like nothing happened before it surfaced above water.
But of course, none of them knew that one of the detectives wasn't inside and instead headed towards them.
"Looking at you like this is like being in heaven, Yuma. So cute..."
“D-desuhiko...” With blushing cheeks, he lowered his head a little and swallowed. He wasn't quite used to his compliments yet. He knew that he gave a lot of them to literally anyone when they were just passing through Kanai Ward as colleagues but once he confessed to Yuma, he stopped and only sent his sweet words to the detective standing right in front of him.
Desuhiko would definitely never tell him that whenever those words came out of his mouth and he was rewarded with Yuma's blushing cheeks, his heart pounded so hard that he was afraid it would soon fall out of his mouth. He couldn't believe that Yuma liked him too, Desuhiko was so sure he had a crush on that girl from the academy...
"You can kiss me, Desuhiko. I'm ready, I promise."
Yuma slowly grabbed his hand and smiled, Desuhiko leaned towards him again with full determination and before he could touch his lips, something metal suddenly hit him in the head.
"Ow! Shit, that hurt! What the hell?!" He immediately pulled away from Yuma and began to rub his head, now full of pain. The object that hit him was still in the air but the way it bounced, it returned to its owner's hand.
"I don't really care what you do in your free time, Desuhiko, but I don't appreciate it when you harass our colleagues."
Halara tightly clutched the coin in their hand and came closer to Yuma, a hint of worry appearing on their face. Yes, they had become close after their last case, but Yuma would never have guessed that they would become so concerned about the rookie's safety.
"Halara, he didn't do anything to me, we... w-we..." He didn't finish his words, clutched his shoulders in his palms and remained silent as Desuhiko gave Halara an annoyed look. They stood still, a neutral 'Oh' came out of their mouth after a while and Halara put both hands in their pockets.
"...it seems like I misunderstood the situation. My apologies, Yuma."
"Maybe you should apologize to me!" Halara completely ingored Desuhiko's complaints and Yuma finally collected himself as he took a step closer to them.
"You're not going to tell anyone, are you? Me and Desuhiko haven't been together that long, we're still getting used to everything actually, I don't want others to misunderstand..."
Halara was silent, Yuma didn't get to see Desuhiko's confused and hurt face and the tall detective straightened their glasses.
"...is that a request?"
At that moment, Desuhiko stepped in front of Yuma and if he wasn't so afraid of Halara, he probably would have grabbed them by the collar. But he was obviously too small and agitated for that.
"Of course it's a request! Can't you see how uncomfortable you're making Yuma feel?!"
“50 000 Shien can keep my mouth shut." But Desuhiko's immediately opened after hearing such a high amount. Halara didn't seem interested, they probably didn't even care at all what were the detectives from the agency doing, but as soon as there was a chance to make money, they would probably take it.
"So much money just for that?" Yuma spoke up immediately, his face still all red, and Desuhiko definitely agreed.
That rotten, money-grabbing detective!
"I told you I don't work for cheap."
"What work? I call it 'decency'!" Desuhiko got angry again but Yuma stopped him with his arm before he would try to threaten Halara in any way.
Maybe he was just too used to the way the Halara worked.
"I don't have that much money, but... can you not tell anyone about it anyway? Please..."
But Halara was about to leave, Yuma had already given up and when Desuhiko saw his defeated, hurt face, he let out a loud sigh, trying to overcome the nervousness and fear of what the whole situation was implying.
Why didn't Yuma want Halara to tell anyone about this at all costs? Was it really that bad?
"Halara, wait. I'll pay you the cash."
With that he got their attention again, Yuma looked at him in surprise and before he could say anything, Desuhiko smiled at him and pointed at the submarine that Halara had managed to summon in the meantime.
“Maybe you should go inside, it's getting pretty damn cold in here."
“But Desuhiko-”
"We wouldn't want our cute detective to catch a cold, right?"
That managed to silence Yuma and when he saw that his mind probably wouldn't change, he nodded again with blushing cheeks and hurried inside.
Halara certainly didn't waste any time when he disappeared.
"So, about the payment..."
** 3# Yakou **
They were standing on the roof that Yuma loved so much and where he could get lost in the view of the whole city. Desuhiko held the other detective by his side while the other boy held an umbrella above them. After all, this was his favorite place and no one would disturb them here, it had to work out today.
“You really didn't have to pay Halara anything, Desuhiko, that was a lot of money."
"Don't worry about it, it was nothing! They could have asked for a lot more..."
Yuma really wanted to tell him that it wasn't about how much money he paid, but he guessed that Desuhiko wanted to hide their relationship as much as Yuma did. Neither of them really knew what this was about, whether it would become more serious between them or whether they were drawn to each other only because of the situation they found themselves in. If it was the second option, the fact that the other detectives would know about them kissing each other would be just embarrassing. Besides, they were supposed to be working here, Chief Yakou would surely kill them with his own hands if he had any idea that they were hanging around outside, doing god knows what!
"This is a nice place isn't it Desuhiko? How about we... you know..."
"Y-yeah, man! This is the perfect place. For real this time, right?"
And even though Desuhiko wanted to take it slow, he was starting to worry if he would ever kiss Yuma ever, considering that this was already their third attempt. He placed his other hand, which Yuma wasn't holding, on Yuma's shoulder and was beginning to have hopes that they would finally move somewhere.
But then the door to the roof opened, Yakou was already lighting a cigarette in the doorway which he must have come here to smoke, and both men got scared by him. Yuma dropped the umbrella he was holding onto and Desuhiko screamed, scaring the other detective a second time. But the Chief remained standing in the doorway, it was clear to him what was going on before he interrupted them and for a moment, it looked like he wouldn't say a word out of shock.
"Yuma, I sent you to get food, what the hell are you doing here?!"
Oh, Yuma completely forgot about that. He wanted to show Desuhiko what it looked like on the roof and then go buy something to eat, but they got carried away.
"Maybe you could have fetched it yourself if you have time to smoke, old man." Desuhiko was pissed off, but he was holding back so he wouldn't get into more trouble. Even Yuma looked defeated, holding his face in his hands and Shinigami, who he started paying attention to again, was laughing like never before.
"First Halara and now the Chief, they fight for justice and the safety of your lips, Master!"
"And since when are you two a thing? What have I missed?!"
The price Desuhiko paid for their secret was suddenly completely unnecessary because if things continued like this, the whole agency would soon find out.
"That's none of your business."
"Of course it's my business if it gets in the way of Yuma getting dinner! And since when did you start bothering guys too, Desuhiko?"
"Since forever, man! Yuma, come on, we'd better go." He grabbed the other detective's hand and handed him back the umbrella that had been rolling on the wet ground until now. Yuma nervously looked between his boss and his new partner, but Yakou stopped them immediately.
"No way, I won't take the risk of no one bringing any food back! Yuma, go alone. Until the fridge in the submarine is full, Desuhiko will not move from this roof."
"What? Why do you go to such extremes, Chief Yakou?" But Yuma visibly didn't want to contradict his boss, he let go of Desuhiko with a silent apology and then hurried down the stairs instead.
"Someone needs to teach you that I'm your superior and that assignments are done! At any moment, the Peacekeepers could come after us and lock us up, maybe worse! And I need every single detective at full attention, you can't just-!"
But Desuhiko wasn't listening to him, he banged his head against the door in frustration and sighed loudly.
Fate hated them.
** 4# Fubuki **
Yuma was washing dishes in the submarine's kitchen when he heard footsteps behind him. Someone's hands grabbed him from behind and hugged him, the little detective jumped slightly in surprise and turned around to meet Desuhiko's smiling face.
"O-oh, Desuhiko! Back from the mission?"
"That's right, the Chief has nothing to complain about because I did a perfect job!" He looked at the plate in Yuma's hands and let out a loud sigh, letting him go and the other detective started washing it again to make it clean.
"Did he make you wash the dishes?"
“Yeah. I'm still a rookie after all, he can't just send me out and I've caused more trouble than necessary already..."
Before he could reach for another plate, Desuhiko carefully turned his body around and Yuma took a step back, his back meeting the kitchen counter and as he leaned back, Desuhiko moved over him.
"I just... I really want to kiss you, Yuma."
It didn't look like Yakou had told anyone about their incident on the roof, most likely due to Yuma bringing his favorite food earlier than anyone expected. The only person in the submarine right now was Fubuki, who fell asleep on the couch a while ago and so, another situation arose that Desuhiko couldn't afford to miss.
"Then please, go ahead, let's finally do it."
Now! This was the moment when nothing would stop them, when their lips would finally touch and when they would make sure that they would kiss many more times in the future!
"Yuma, what's going on? Are you under Desuhiko's attack?!"
A new voice forced Desuhiko to get up in a flash and because of that, his head bumped into the cabinet's door which Yuma had left opened while he put clean dishes in it. Fubuki was standing right next to them and it looked like she had been watching them for a while, but she still had her smile on her face as she made sure that nothing serious was actually happening.
"Fuck, my head! Why does this keep happening!"
"Desuhiko!" Yuma was right next to him, checking to make sure he hadn't hurt himself too much, but it didn't seem like it was too bad. Therefore, he focused his attention on Fubuki, she was still just standing there, looking like she was looking for something in the kitchen.
"Looking for... something, Fubuki?"
"Ah, I woke up and I am feeling very thirsty. Were you kissing Yuma, Desuhiko?"
As Fubuki pulled him into the conversation, Desuhiko raised his palms defensively and nervously laughed.
"N-no, no! I was just... helping him wash the dishes to get it done faster!" The girl thought about his words for a moment before smiling again and nodding, it looked like she believed Desuhiko too quickly and Yuma didn't know if it was a good or a bad thing.
"Oh, that's nice of you, Desuhiko! But that position looked very uncomfortable, is this some new way to wash dishes I don't know about?" She looked too excited and Yuma thought he saw stars in her eyes.
"Y-yes, something like that..." Yuma answered her and sighed, it seemed that they wouldn't have to explain anything to Fubuki and she wouldn't tell anyone, which obviously bothered Shinigami who was now laying in the sink.
"Silly me, I really thought you two were creating love here! I really need to stop making things up as I see them, although it sure would be cute."
Yuma and Desuhiko exchanged glances and sure enough, they were thinking the same thing. Fubuki was incredibly nice and even if she realized what they were really trying to do, she certainly wouldn't tell anyone.
Even so, they wanted to wait until the kiss actually happens before telling anyone about it.
"Ah, you said you were thirsty, didn't you? Let me make you something to drink, Fubuki." Yuma offered himself immediately after blushing at her words and at that signal, Desuhiko made way for him.
He looked at them for a moment before leaving to sit on the couch without any words.
Desuhiko was in hell.
** 5# Vivia **
They were the only ones in the hotel's restaurant, Desuhiko was quietly eating his breakfast and Yuma stared at him from time to time as he minded his own his meal. Although he didn't live in the hotel like the other detectives, Desuhiko got him something to eat at the bar despite his protests. He didn't want him to feel awkward while he was treating himself to something good.
"Desuhiko?"
"Hmm?"
"It's... quiet... And nobody's here."
"Hmm…" He continued digging into his food and Yuma looked at him with a little surprise. After all, he had to know what Yuma was getting at, Desuhiko was an expert at these signals!
"Don't you want to kiss?"
"You still want to?" Desuhiko finally looked at him, stopped eating and for the first time, Yuma felt like he didn't know what to say to the other detective.
"Huh? O-of course I want to, we just haven't had a proper chance yet!"
"And you think it will be different today? It always happens as soon as I get close to you, Yakou will jump through the window or Halara strangles me from behind, what if Fubuki arrives here out of nowhere as a waitress? What if Vivia's reading under our table?!" He was gradually getting more and more angry and Yuma knew why, he was slowly losing his patience himself. Therefore, he got up from his seat and walked around the table to be closer to Desuhiko.
"We have to try!"
He squeezed Desuhiko's hands tightly in his and put on the most determined expression he could muster. This silenced the other man, he didn't dare say anything else and just nodded slowly.
"But if something happens again-!"
"Nothing will happen! We're alone here, Desuhiko, I'm sure of it! Chief Yakou must have other things to worry about and Halara has stopped caring about us thanks to you, Fubuki is on a mission and if I pull back this tablecloth, you'll see that Vivia is definitely-"
He ran out of words as soon as he actually grabbed the cloth and pushed it away, Vivia stopped reading under their table and raised his head with a tired expression to look Yuma in the eyes.
"Oh... you can continue... Just ignore me..."
Desuhiko slammed both fists on the table and stood up, breaking out of Yuma's grasp and walking towards the exit.
"D-desuhiko, wait!"
But the detective didn't stop, he left the hotel and Yuma lowered his head in disappointment, looking at Vivia and asking for any explanation of what he was doing under their table. The green haired detective pointed to his book.
"It was cold at the piano today... and here, under the table... it was so pleasant..."
Yuma let go of the tablecloth and hid Vivia again, settling back into his chair and pulling his knees to his chest with a sigh.
'Kyahaha, you must listen to what's the universe telling you, Master! Because it definitely doesn't want anything to happen between you and that little bastard!"
'Leave me alone, Shinigami.'
** +1 **
"We're leaving, you two! And I'd like to remind you once again that we'll be gone and won't be back until the evening!"
Yakou was currently telling them this for at least the tenth time before pushing the other detectives out of the submarine. It took Yuma a while to realize what he was trying to do, but since he had at least some detective experience left in him, he was able to figure it out on his own. Since most of them now knew what was going on, they most likely felt guilty for how many moments they had unintentionally ruined and now created a situation where he and Desuhiko could solve everything in peace and with privacy.
But the other detective was sitting far away from him, not paying attention to what Yakou was saying, not even showing any effort to do anything with Yuma. It had been a few days since the fiasco with Vivia, and Yuma felt like they had grown incredibly distant since then. Desuhiko no longer hugged him and no longer tried his sweet words on him, he stopped looking for any moments when they could finally kiss and Yuma didn't want to force himself onto him.
He felt desperate and Shinigami wasn't helping him one bit.
"So it looks like Fubuki already knows too, haha..." He couldn't be any more nervous but even after that, Desuhiko didn't react to him in any way. When Yuma checked on him, he saw that his arms were crossed and he was staring at the ceiling, as if completely ignoring the other detective's presence.
Was he... sulking?
'Of course not, he's just lost interest in you, Master! You know how it is, he tries to flirt with everyone and he can never last with any of them, kyahaha!'
And even if he wanted to tell her that it wasn't true, he couldn't. Because the chances of Desuhiko getting bored of him were extremely high. It wasn't his fault, Yuma was just sure that he himself was really boring.
But besides being boring, he was also determined. That's why he needed to know what exactly he did wrong.
"Desuhiko, what's going on? Why aren't you talking to me?"
It came out in a strange tone and he must have sounded really desperate, because the other detective finally turned to him with concern.
"Are you ashamed of me, Yuma?"
He had to think for a while before he realized what Desuhiko was asking him, since he was sure this conversation would go in a completely different direction.
'Of course he's ashamed of you, you're a lost cause!'
Ignoring Shinigami completely, he quickly stood up to approach Desuhiko with worry.
"W-what? Where did this come from? Why would I be?"
"Isn't it clear? It just seems as if... as if for you, the fact that others would know that there is something between us, is the worst thought in the world!"
Yuma didn't understand. Yes, he was a little embarrassed to think that others knew what was going on between them, but he would never mind being seen with Desuhiko together. Why would he have such a bad thought?
"... when Halara came, one of your first words were 'You're not going to tell anyone, are you?' And you looked so desperate, I could smell the fear right off of you, Master!'
Yuma didn't turn to face her but once he heard her words, it started to make sense to him. When he heard the amount Halara was asking for, his first thought were not 'I don't mind if you tell someone' but 'I don't have that much money, can't you keep quiet for free'?
“When Halara saw us... Desuhiko-”
“I only gave them the money because you looked like you were going to die if Halara told anyone."
He was beginning to understand.
'And when the Chief saw you, you didn't even think of disobeying him and staying with Desuhiko, you didn't even look at him! He looked seriously disappointed when you left, Master!"
"After that show with the Chief, I went with the flow, mainly so that you wouldn't be the 'one who wanted to kiss Desuhiko'... I had enough of hiding, so I stopped trying. I'm sorry."
He looked seriously defeated, even now that he had told Yuma everything, and the rookie couldn't just let it go.
"Don't apologize, Desuhiko! I should be the one to say sorry, I'm such an idiot..."
He lowered his head in defeat as well and after a moment of silence, Desuhiko moved a bit to make room for him on the couch. As soon as Yuma settled there, he felt tears in his eyes and Desuhiko immediately began to panic.
"H-hey, Yuma-"
"You should be the one ashamed of me! I was so sure you wouldn't want to be seen with someone like me, with such a loser... But you wanted to, all this time... All this time you didn't care who he knew and I was a fool, I just hurt you."
Shinigami surprisingly had no comments, she was most likely also hurt to see her Master cry and didn't want to be another reason for those tears. But Desuhiko started laughing out of nowhere, Yuma wiped his wet cheeks and when he looked at him, full of surprise, the other detective put an arm around his shoulders.
"Wow... we're both just stubborn idiots, huh? To say I should be ashamed of you, who would be ashamed of such a cute and smart detective as a boyfriend? I don't care who's watching, and if you also-"
Before he could finish his words, Yuma immediately leaned towards him and finally connected their lips for the first time. Their fingers entwined in their laps and Desuhiko was able to realise what was happening quickly enough but even so, their first kiss was rather awkward.
'He got so cocky and now, he looks like he has no idea what he's doing, Master!'
But he ignored Shinigami again, instead smiling at Desuhiko as soon as they moved away from each other and pointed to the kitchen.
“I... I want us to make up for all the times we were interrupted."
And the other detective quickly nodded, pulled him into the kitchen and there, he leaned him against the counter where the kissing began again. They held each other the whole time as they left the submarine and leaned against the metal structure where they kissed again, and again as they walked past the hotel. They laughed like idiots as they ran up the stairs to the roof where Yakou had interrupted them that day and when they were holding onto the railing, they pressed themselves together and exchanged the last kiss that was stolen from them earlier.
This time, Yuma didn't have time to grab an umbrella so they were both completely drenched, which didn't matter to them at the moment. But Desuhiko took off his waterproof hat anyway after a while and put it on his boyfriend's head, Yuma snuggled up to his side and they started to look at the view that made them love going to the roof so much.
"M-my anger was just a test, okay? I was just faking it..." Desuhiko finally said with red cheeks and Yuma smirked.
"Of course."
'Sir, you want to stay in a relationship with him?! You only fought with each other because of how stubborn you both are, this is not going to end well!'
'We didn't fight, we just talked. You see only the bad sides of everything, Shinigami!'
She knew he wasn't going to change his mind, so she gave up and sighed as she started to look at the view with them.
It was true that Desuhiko was at least fun when he was around. Maybe it won't be so bad, she thought.
