“Can I help you?” Alhaitham asked, settling back into his chair. He was never completely sure where he stood with Tighnari. Were they friends? Possibly. Probably. They drank together, at least. But Tighnari was a little too sharp for Alhaitham’s comfort; he always felt a little transparent under his eyes. But now those eyes weren’t focused on him. They weren’t really focused on anything. Tighnari looked half-mad with exhaustion, hair mussed and ears twitching wildly. He leaned one hand heavily against the doorway as he slumped in place.
“Where is the Temple of Silence?”

When Hermanubis turns against his host and leaves Cyno near dead, Alhaitham has too little time and too much desert to search in a desperate bid to find the Temple of Silence and the only people who might be able to save him. (Oh yeah. And then maybe he can confess.)

Alhaitham swallows and nods, still taking him in. “You have a new scar.”

Cyno’s jaw clenches. “This injury saved a half-dozen lives. I consider it a badge of honor.”

“I’d hardly call it that,” says Alhaitham in a faint voice.

“What do you care what I call it?” Cyno asks coolly, before pushing past him. He lowers his voice. “Are we not strangers?”

“Haven’t you heard the rumors about me?”

“I’ve heard a few.” Cyno tightens his grip on his dossier. “None that I should believe.”

“You should.” Prince Alhaitham smirks, but there’s no joy in it. His voice is bitter when he speaks. “I have a spell woven into my soul. Against my wishes, I belong to the first person that makes me laugh.”

    --

Alhaitham somehow adopts a crown and a curse: whoever is the first to make the Sumerian Prince laugh wins his heart.

Cyno simply wants to protect his queen through her doomed matchmaking ceremony with Sumeru’s Prince. He has no intention of winning any hearts, but he ends up losing his own.

“You’re in love with the General Mahamatra?” blurted the Spantamad sage, the moment the door had closed.

He was supposed to be a sage. If Alhaitham had any ambition, he would have despaired.

It sneaks up on him like Cyno did, the realisation: that Cyno had made a place for himself in Alhaitham's comfortable life, and had turned it into a home

“Natsuki’s face filled Shin’s vision, framed by the flickering fluorescents overhead. The dim light buzzed and bent around him, turning his curls into a shadowy halo, catching the edges of his features.
Dark hair, light skin, dark eyes—he was a mosaic of contrast. It made the moles on his face stand out even more, like deliberate brushstrokes. Intentional. Specific. Like a painting. But unlike a painting that face was moving.
    And oh, he was shouting.
“Do you have a fucking death wish, you shitty esper?!””

Shin, in typical fashion, ignores a blazing forest of red flags to help Natsuki trial his recent ESP related invention. The burnout was inevitable. The confession? Less so—though it had been smoldering beneath the surface for longer than either of them knew.
