Work Text:
It was very, very cold. They should probably have expected that, this late at night, but it was just their luck that they didn’t so now here they were, shivering in just their day clothes, sprawled across the damp grass. They had been out there for quite some time, and Grian’s tie-dye shirt had become completely damp, wetness seeping through every layer until it reached his skin. He shivered, but the movement made the damp fabric drag across his back, making him all the more uncomfortable. He huffed.
“C’mon, Mumbo, it’s been hours! Isn’t this supposed to be a swarm? Shouldn’t we be seeing a bunch of shooting stars?”
“Yes, yes! We’re just passing through the– well. I forget what it’s called. But tonight is supposed to be the peak.”
“Supposed to…” Scar repeated, with a teasing lilt to his voice.
“That doesn’t sound too reassuring.”
“No, no! It’s supposed to– I mean, it’s today for sure!”
Grian resettled with another grumble, paying extra care to jostle Mumbo, who was lying beside him, as he did. The night sky was really pretty, away from the blaring lights of the shopping district. Serene and beautiful. But it wasn’t why they’d decided against sleeping on this fine night, and cold and miserable as he was, Grian was getting sick of waiting for the alleged hoard of shooting stars to appear. He’d already found every constellation that he knew of, but he ran his eyes over them again. The Glare, with Herobrine just to its left, and below that, the Mangrove and the Moobloom just barely visible above the horizon. Come to think of it, the Killer Bunny should’ve been right beside that one… He let out a noise of victory as he connected the dots. It was actually kind of fun to figure out all of these old constellations that he he’d last paid attention to seasons ago.
“Look!” Scar exclaimed beside him, almost making him jump as he swung his arm up to point to their right, “It’s you, Grian!”
He pushed himself up to his elbows, squinting in that general direction to figure out what Scar had meant. There was definitely no Grian constellation, though that group of stars did look quite familiar. Mumbo chuckled beside him. “What! What do you mean, it’s ‘me’?”
“It’s the Copper Golem!”
“A button-pressing menace, just like you.”
”Hey!” He pushed himself up, looking down at the other two with a withering glare. “That’s it! I’m done, I’m not gonna continue getting my butt frozen off just to watch a bit of space dust in the sky. I’m going inside!” He cast one last glance towards the inky-black blanket of the night sky, already moving to turn back toward his tent when–
It was a huge shooting star, illuminating the sky. It was beautiful. Perhaps not beautiful enough to warrant long hours spent freezing out in the grass, but beautiful nonetheless. It left a long streak of white before disappearing, leaving the Buttercups to gawk in pleasant surprise. Mumbo was the first to recover.
“See! I told you we’d see a shooting star!”
