Chapter Text
In the outskirt of the ruined city, a group of teens scouted the area cautiously. They remained in a group through their small journey.
“Why did Baka-Guren have to send us out? There’s nothing fucking here!” Yuuichirou complained as their squad continued to walk through the destroyed streets.
“There has been sightings of vampires by many of the patrolling soldiers. It’s only obvious that they’d send us in to take care of it.” Shinoa stated, “Besides, we’re the only squad available, so suck it up, cherry boy.”
“Stop calling me a cherry boy, damn it!” He shouted, “We haven’t seen anything for the past an hour!! How much longer are we supposed to stay out here?”
“Shut up, baka-Yuu. The hell did you expect? The vampires to come out and say “Here we are!” in front of us?” Kimizuki snapped at the raven-haired soldier.
Yuuichirou glared at the pink-haired man, “You wanna fight, telephone pole.” He said angry can be seen in both his eyes and Kimizuki’s, but before the two could continue any further, Yoichi came in between them.
“Now, now, let’s not fight. Remember we’re all a big family, right! Family doesn’t fight!” The brunette reasoned, which successful calmed the two down a bit.
Seeing that everything was a bit more quieter, Shinoa spoke, “Aside from the fight, Yuu-san does have a point though. We should’ve been able to find at least one vampire in the area... ” She thought for a bit before an idea popped into her head, “We could always try to split up to cover more ground.”
“That’s an idiotic idea! The whole reason we’re in a squad is to avoid individual work!” Mitsuba protested.
“Don’t worry, it’ll be fine. There’s only supposed to be 3 vampires anyway, and from what the patroller's claims their weapons are very weak.” Shinoa explained, “Also we’re not going to completely split up. Me, you, and Yoichi-san will be one team and Kimizuki-san and Yuu-san will be their own separate teams as they can stand against a regular vampire with ease.”
“Wait, but that’s in the case that we encounter one vampire. What if we find more than one?” Kimizuki inquired.
“In that case you are to retreat. Fend them off as much as possible until the opportunity arises. Give into your demon as much as you can without being possessed. If the vampires continue to pursue you then reunite with one of our groups. Where we’ll be shouldn’t be far from each other. Is that understood?” Shinoa was answered with five simultaneous nods, “Alright, move out.”
Yuuichirou looked around through all the buildings in his area. Shinoa’s group had gone to the park area, Kimizuki was given the shopping district and Yuuichirou was left with the main buildings. They had agreed to search each area for another thirty minutes. When the time limit was over they were to report back at the plaza.
The raven-haired soldier sighed. For the past few minutes, he’s seen nothing whatsoever. At this point he’s starting to believe that this was some sort of prank, but disagreed with that thought. This was war, after all. There was nothing to gain from endangering other except more dead bodies.
Pulling out the pocket watch that was given for the mission, Yuuichirou check the time.
Five minutes left… I should start heading back. He thought as he put the watch back into his pocket. He was ready to go back, but stopped and ran the opposite direction of the randevu place.
He heard the screech of a monster.
The vampires scowled when they had caught sight of the squad, even more when they notice that they were all equipped with powerful Cursed Gear.
“Damn livestock, they’re apart of the Vampire Elimination Unit.” One of the three vampires glowered, beginning to walk, “We’ll have to retreat for now.”
“Yes, that would be the best decision, but what about that one?” A female vampire inquired as they’re small group follows, gesturing towards a small blond child in the same, but miniature, uniform, who was not paying them any mind. He was busy admiring everything, from insects to ruined buildings, “The boy won’t do us much good.”
“Indeed, he’ll only slow us down and get us killed, if we are to get caught. That child is already trouble as it is.” The last vampire stated, “Our mission is to gather information, not be the child’s daycare.”
The first vampire continued to walk, “Leave him. If he dies, too bad. I’m not risking my life for his.”
The other two nodded in agreement and continued to move away from the human squad and the unknowingly lone young vampire.
Mikaela had no real clue as to why he was out in the human world, except for experience, but he couldn’t care less. It didn’t mask the thrill he had for finally leaving Sanguinem. He disliked being there with all the might his small body could hold. He’s glad that he was finally freed, especially from that lilac ponytailed haired man. (Mikaela was sure that he was a pedophile.) Not only that he was also able to get away from the Queen.
The boy shuddered in remembrance of her.
To her, he was nothing more than a form of entertainment, a pet, a dog. Mikaela remembers it all, the way she forced him to become a vampire, the way she forced her blood and the blood of a human afterward to complete his transformation.
It’s been a few years since that had happened, which was why he was surprised to hear that she’s let her dog off his leash.
Which, brings him to the situation he has now.
Mikaela had been so engulfed with the beautiful yet tragic view of the destroyed world that he hadn’t realized the vampires leaving him for dead. When he did, they were of nowhere in his sight.
In a slight panic, Mikaela began to look around for them.
M-Maybe they just went to make sure the coast is clear? The small vampire thought as he looked behind and inside buildings in his area. They’re just up-ahead. They wouldn’t leave!
Clinging onto that one hope, the blond vampire pressed forward in hopes of finding the vampires that he had been assigned to. However, as he continued to move, the more and more uncertain the young boy got. This continued on until his vampiric hearing had caught the sound of rubble being pushed aside behind him.
With all his fears clouding his mind, he didn’t notice the loud sounds of rubble being pushed aside behind him until it was fearfully close behind him. When he finally took notice, he slowly turned and looked behind him. He froze at the sight.
A few meters away was a Four Horsemen of John.
Mikaela looked up at the Horseman in terror and slowly stepped away from it. He had no way to defend himself. The vampires hadn’t given him any sort of weapon. This mission was only to be for experience, there had been no reason for a young vampire such as himself to be in possession of one.
He was grateful for the distance he was able to put between him and the monster, he actually believed that he’d be able to escape from it.
That was until he tripped over some rubble from the destroyed buildings.
The small vampire had yelped and fell with a ‘thud’ a little too loudly, especially with its volume being intensified of with how quiet the destroyed city had been. His noise had successfully caught the attention of the Horseman.
The beast let out a piercing screech before charging at the blonde. Mikaela quickly got onto his feet and started to run.
He was scared, he was scared of getting killed. As a vampire, he knew he couldn’t get killed easily, but against a Horseman it was a different story. The apocalyptic beast wouldn’t just kill him. No, it would tear him through, and with his regeneration abilities he would live through it all.
But it wouldn’t end there.
The Horseman would devour him alive, and in his weakened state Mikaela wouldn’t be able to make any resistance.
I don’t want to die.. I don’t want to die! Not like this!! Mikaela thought as the Horseman was closing in on him. Tears welled up in his eyes, Why did they leave..? No.. Please someone! Anyone! Save me!!
And, as if his prayers were answered, he heard the voice of his savior.
“Let’s go, Asuramaru!!” Yuuichirou called out as he unsheathed his sword and slashed straight through the Horseman. The beast fell to the ground with a loud crash. The raven-haired teen whips his sword in the air to clean it of any blood before placing it back into its scabbard.
“Now then, who was-- Whoa!!” Yuuichirou yelped when he felt a small weight cling onto one of his legs. He looked down and saw a small boy crying into his pants. He crouched down and patted the blonde’s hair with a smile, “Hey.. It’s alright you’re safe.”
When blonde child finally looked up, Yuuichirou froze. The young boy had red eyes with slit pupils. Not only that he wore a vampire uniform and two tiny fangs barely visible under his top lip.
On instinct, Yuuichirou would’ve unsheathed his sword and stabbed the vampire right though, even in its appearance of a child, but he didn’t. No, what stopped his was what he saw in those red eyes.
Fear, relief, thankfulness, hope.
In none of his years in the army has he ever seen a vampire with any of those emotions. Every bloodsucker he’s ever faced had nothing in their eyes, only hunger and coldness. That was enough to make him rethink on killing this vampire.
He spend the next few minutes waiting for the young vampire’s tears to stop, occasionally comforting him with words of reassurance or patting his head. When he did, the vampire smiled up at Yuuichirou.
“Thank you for saving me, Mister! I was really scared that I was going to die.” The blonde softly spoke, his voice a bit hoarse from crying.
“It’s fine. Also you don’t have to be so formal. You can call me Yuu.” The raven-haired soldier said politely. He wasn’t sure if he should tell a vampire his name, but this one seemed to be okay to him.
“Yuu-chan then! I’m Mikaela, but I like being called Mika.” Mikaela said happily.
“Its nice to meet you then Mika.” He smiled and then remembered he needed to meet up with the others. He patted the blonde’s hair one last time, “Anyway, I have to get going. Make sure to be safe now.” Yuuichirou said. Leaving a vampire would be alright he thought, but before he could even take another step felt a hand grab his pants.
He looked back to see Mikaela fidgeting with his head down.
He didn’t want Yuuichirou to leave… That thought alone made him scared. He didn’t want to be left alone.
Mikaela lifted his head up and stared with hopeful eyes, “Can… Can I go with you?” He asked, his voice small, close to a whisper.
Yuuichirou felt conflicted. He knew Mikaela didn’t mean any harm, but he can’t just openly take in any vampire that shows emotion. He and the blonde would get into severe trouble for this, if he agreed. He didn’t want to put the vampire in anymore danger.
“I’m sorry, but you can’t… come with me--” Yuuichirou couldn’t finish his sentence when he heard small sniffles and hiccups coming from Mikaela. Shit! He thought when he noticed that tears were beginning to form once more, “I-I mean…! Umm…” The soldier thought of the possibilities of taking the small vampire with him.
On one hand, it’d be a terrible idea because he’s from a Vampire Extermination Unit. His job is to kill vampires not take them in and care for them!
On the other hand though… Yuuichirou glanced back at the vampire, tears still threatening to fall.
He sighed, “I-I guess… I might be able to take you...” He mumbled, and before he knew it, the raven-haired teen was tackled in a hug by the young vampire, words of appreciation coming out of Mikaela’s mouth.
Guren’s gonna kill me. Yuuichirou thought briefly as he embraced the small blonde back, but it was soon pushed away when he saw the smile on Mikaela’s face. He smiled too. Well, he never was one to follow the rules anyway.
