A Matter of Perspective

Summary:

Obito makes a sound of frustration from where he’s talking to Rin instead of packing up. Lazy bastard. “Having crushes is the worst!” he declares, high and petulant. Kakashi stands, kunai sufficiently packed. “I hate always acting so stupid around them.”

Kakashi pauses. Turns to look at Obito, because the idea of Obito only acting stupid around one person is laughable; Obito is always acting stupid. “I don’t see how that’s any different from normal for you,” he cuts in, though he didn’t mean to.

Work Text:

Kakashi packs away his kunai, taking care that every one is properly wrapped.

Obito makes a sound of frustration from where he’s talking to Rin instead of packing up. Lazy bastard. “Having crushes is the worst! ” he declares, high and petulant.

Obito stiffens, shooting him a panicked glance before hurriedly flicking his gaze away. “You’re always acting stupid, even when only I’m around to see it,” Kakashi informs him.

Obito gapes at him, face rapidly gaining color. Rin and Minato-sensei look no better, though without the reddening, presumably because it isn’t them Kakashi’s called bullshit on.

Still, the weight of their stares is enough to make him want to shift on his feet. “Why are you guys looking at me like that?” He crosses his arms, keeping his discomfort carefully under wraps.

Obito looks over to Rin and Minato-sensei, then to Kakashi, and makes a sound remarkably like a cat falling down a drainage pipe, burying his bright red face in his hands.

What?” Kakashi snaps, because he doesn’t like not knowing things. “I’m just telling the truth.” It wasn’t like he’d even said anything particularly mean, just stated a fact. Obito ’s the one who lied .

Rin starts giggling. “Yeah, Obito, maybe you should explain.” Obito shoots her a rather pathetic glare—more pleading than it is threatening—his face red as the uchiwa on his back. Minato face is buried in his hands, his shoulders shaking with what must be laughter. Kakashi feels distinctly like he’s missing something, beyond just why they were looking at him weird.

Whatever it is probably isn’t important anyway. But—but Kakashi doesn’t like the idea of not knowing something, hates that everyone seems to know but him.

He stomps over to Obito, gets close enough Obito’s forced to look at him. “You have something to say to me?” Perhaps asking nicely would have been more effective, but Kakashi is irritated , and asking nicely is not a thing Kakashi is familiar with anyhow.

Obito’s face gets impossibly redder. It must be really embarrassing, then . But what does it have to do with Kakashi ? “Um.” He’s looking anywhere but at Kakashi, now.. “You know, I think I actually promised to help an old lady waterhercatokaybye!” Obito bursts out, reedy and desperate. He runs off down the street as Kakashi stares after him incredulously. He didn’t even take his supplies with him.

Notes:

OIYFWBLSJHEFRW Obito acting perfectly intelligent around everyone else is the interpretation I didn’t know I needed. I know it’s not canon but the concept is so so funny. Did horribly in the academy/chuunin exams bc Kakashi was there. Functioned perfectly fine every time Kakashi was absent. Failed horribly to demonstrate this to Kakashi in any form. The only reason he was so good when he first activated his sharingan is because Kakashi was looking the other way. Would have been able to convince Kakashi how great infinite tsukuyomi would be if only Kakashi weren’t there. Gets stupider when Kakashi is within a five meter vicinity. If I had the time rn, I'd write a longfic.
