Adam stirred awake to the sounds of retching. Drowsily peeking at his cellphone on the side table next to him, he cursed at the time. 2:00 AM? He really needed to somehow tell his unborn baby to ease up on his mama. Sliding the covers off him, he padded to their en-suite bathroom to find Kim kneeling on the floor, head buried in the toilet. He bent to gather her hair in a makeshift ponytail with one hand while rubbing soothing circles on her back with the other. After a few more minutes, she stood up and wordlessly walked to the sink to rinse her mouth and brush her teeth. He leaned against the door, crossing his arms as he watched her.
“Is this the first time tonight?” Adam felt helpless during times like these, and his way of making it up to her was to just be there while she threw up, helping in any way he could.
“Yeah, thankfully. I woke up to pee about seven times, though” she said drily, glancing at him to give him a side eye.
Adam grinned. He actually lived for these small moments. Not the part where Kim suffered, of course. That part he would happily take away and do it himself if he could. But those small reminders she threw his way that proved they were having a baby. He lived for those.
“I’m sorry, baby. What can I say? He sounds like a little kicker,” he said.
“He?” she asked.
Adam shrugged. He had a feeling. Don’t get him wrong, he would be completely fine with a baby girl. But he had a feeling.
“Are you coming back to bed?” he asked, following her out of the bathroom.
“I want to, but I’m also hungry now that I’ve thrown up and I’m awake,” she said, walking out of their room and into the kitchen. She goes to the fridge, groaning as she looks it over. Slamming the door shut, she opens the freezer, groaning again.
“Ugh, I ate the last of the ice cream yesterday,” she whined. Adam chuckled at the reaction, but stops immediately at the icy glare she sends him.
“Oh, you think this is funny, do you?”
“Nope. Absolutely not. I wasn’t laughing. Nope, that was me trying to…that was…,”
“I don’t even have the patience to wait for you to figure that one out. I need more ice cream,” she said.
Adam didn’t even blink. He walked into their room to grab some clothes.
“Wait, where are you going?” she asked, following him.
“Well, you said you wanted ice cream, and there’s none at home. So I was thinking of running out and getting you some,” he said as he shrugged on a T-shirt over his sweats.
“But… it’s 2:00 AM,” she said.
“Babe, I’m sure I can find a 24 hour place,” he replied. He walked to her, pressed a kiss to her mouth, and left. She heard the jangle of the keys, the door opening and then closing. She stood there for a few seconds, then went back out to the living room, settling down on the couch and turning on the TV, mindful of the volume so as to not wake Mak up. She pressed play on an old episode of one of her favorite shows, needing some comfort and familiarity.
She was halfway through the next episode and almost nodding off when she heard the front door open again, and she sat up, peering over the couch at Adam.
“Did you find any?” she asked hopefully. He walked over to her side and stood right in front of her. He dangled a plastic bag in front of her face.
“What do you think?” he asked playfully. The squeal that erupted out of Kim’s mouth could’ve rivaled Mak’s; Adam chuckled when she shot up and threw her arms around him, smothering his face with kisses.
“Oh my god. Thank you thank you thank you,” she said between kisses. Fully laughing now, he wrapped his arms around her.
“Don’t you wanna make sure I got all the goods before rewarding me?” he said. He regretted his words immediately because she abruptly stopped.
“You make an excellent point,” she said, grabbing the bag and heading to the kitchen. She unloaded everything, snorting at the box of tissues.
“Ha, ha, very funny,” she said, holding it up.
“What? It’s an innocent box of tissues. I just noticed we ran out of the box in our room…it’s got nothing to do with you,” he said, with a small smirk on his face.
“You gotta work on your poker face, babe. You’re a cop, you can't keep getting made,” she replied. She grabbed a bowl and an ice cream scoop and started filling her bowl.
“Those are some fancy words coming from you, I saw you bawl your eyes out over that puppy commercial the other day,” he said, stealing a bite from her.
“Hey! Get your own,” she demanded, glaring at him. “Don’t you know better than to come in the middle of a pregnant woman and her ice cream?”
“No, but I do know better than to come in the middle of Kim Burgess and her dessert, so forgive me, my queen,” he said.
“Yeah, you better ask for mercy. Now, come on, I was in the middle of an episode,” she said, walking back to the couch. He followed, as if he had any other choice. He would follow that woman straight to hell.
Adam managed to steal two more bites, which earned him a very grumpy Kim. By the time they were done, she was already half asleep, and he carried her to their room and laid her on their bed.
Once he’d locked up, he slid into bed beside her and as they did every night, they automatically snuggled up.
Long minutes passed, and just as he’d thought she was asleep, she murmured his name.
“Adam?”
“Yeah, baby?”
“I know I give you a lot of shit every day about this pregnancy…but it’s just the hormones. You know that, right?” Adam was actually stunned. Is she feeling guilty right now?
“Kim…you’re carrying our child. For all I care, you could quadruple the amount of shit you give me everyday and I still won’t care one bit. I’ll take you in all your hormonal glory. I’m just so grateful for you, and our family,” he said. She smiled and snuggled closer, and they drifted off to sleep.
