Prophecies are an enormous part of any demigod’s life. Write about a line of a prophecy that most resonates with you. What was prophesied? How did it end up coming to pass? How does that affect your choices and your goals to come to NRU?

I received my first prophecy at age twelve, the summer I first came to Camp Half-Blood. I wasn’t even thirteen yet, and my only experience with prophecies so far had been the twist in the prophecy of Pokémon 2000 , and though I didn’t know it at the time, it turned out to be a very instructive life lesson.

For my first quest, I was sent on a mission to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt. The Oracle gave me a list of things I would accomplish: go west, find the god who had turned, and find the bolt and return it. The first part of the prophecy was straightforward, but it was the second bit that was hard. It told me that I’d be betrayed by someone I called a friend, and then I’d fail to save what mattered most.

I knew exactly what mattered most. Because my mother had been kidnapped by Hades, and I didn’t really care about my quest, I just wanted to save her. To be told at the beginning that I was destined to fail was a terrible feeling, but I knew it wouldn’t stop me from trying.

And that was how I found out the prophecies aren’t straight forward, just like in the Pokémon movie. Some things aren’t straightforward just because you don’t understand: we incorrectly guessed which god had been turned, and the friend who betrayed me wasn’t even on my radar. But sometimes, they don’t mean what you think. I did fail to save my mom, but that’s because she saved herself. And she likes doing that. She wouldn’t even let my dad help her, even when she was eighteen, broke, and had a baby–me.

Prophecies continued to follow me, and they continued to not be what they seemed. But the full scope of that didn’t really reach me again until I was almost sixteen, and I had fulfilled (and hadn’t fulfilled) the great prophecy that had been associated with my birth, which said that when “a half-blood of the eldest gods” reached the age of sixteen, a cursed blade would reap the hero’s soul.  I was the only demigod child of the Big Three who’d done that in seventy years. Everyone thought it meant I was going to die. But the mistake everyone was making, including myself, was thinking that because the half-blood in question was me, it meant that I was also the hero. I wasn’t, and that mistake could have been really dangerous. But by being able to accept it, and to expect the unexpected, like I had with my mom, I was able to hand the choice over to the person who was the hero. Like my mom, he had to take responsibility, and like before, I had to as well, even if my goal before had been to stop him.

It was a hard decision, but every day, my future, including at NRU, makes it clear it was the right one. We have to be on our own paths.

Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

Most people, when they first meet a child of Athena, immediately assume that they are one of the smart, studious kids. After all, with a mom like Athena, the goddess of wisdom, school must be super easy for them, right?

And in most cases, they are correct. School is easy. But that isn’t the same as being studious. Because the goal of most K-12 education isn’t to breed that kind of person.

Children of Athena are used to being the smartest people in the room. Schools don’t normally like that, especially not when you’re seven, or seventeen. There are exceptions, of course, but in general, teachers don’t like it when their students are smarter than them, and peers who don’t get that brain power is in your blood don’t appreciate it.

That was one of the reasons, I think, I was so happy when I got to Camp Half-Blood at seven years old. I was immediately swept up into Cabin Six, and even though I wasn’t always the smartest person in the room, it was alright, because these people didn’t think being smart was measured by how many chapter books you could read, or how many words you could spell. My half-siblings helped show me that wisdom could come from many different sources. And Camp came with a library written in Greek, so I could actually read it, instead of being called stupid for not liking to read books in English.

As time went on, and I grew up at camp, I did end up being the smartest person in the Athena cabin, too. And eventually I even returned to mortal school. This time aware that they were wrong, and that I could always find refuge in a place that knew I was smart.

Until I met the Sphinx. I had studied her riddles, and studied the myths. I knew them inside and out. I was so sure I could be like Oedipus and Odysseus and outsmart her. And then, instead of giving me a riddle, she started asking questions like school.

I was furious. And after some consideration, I decided I wasn’t going to participate. Because if I was not willing to participate in such dumb structures for school, why would I do so for something I respected even less, like a monster? School might be easy and dumb, but there were things I would not stoop so low to do. Like school, the Sphinx’s game was not difficult. But it was beneath me, and beneath the once majestic old monster.

So I destroyed her system with my friends. And though they were annoyed at the time, now my boyfriend thinks it was cute. I’m proud of how I measured up to the Sphinx. And now, every time I’m in a class and think it's beneath me, I remind myself I am correct. It is, so I focus on things that actually matter, like my architecture degree, and my future at New Rome University.

If you're currently applying to college, some of those essay prompts might look familiar.
