    Summary

In the Pentarchy no one of significantly high standing was permitted to marry for love. By tradition, a prince of the realm is always promised to one of the other states. To strengthen the bonds between them. Ezran’s hand had been promised to Duren’s High Queen since before he was born, but Callum had been a special case. Until just now at least. To the visceral annoyance of the other four kingdoms Katolis had made a tradition of offering every fifth prince of their realm to the lands of Xadia. No formal channels of communication existed between Katolis and the magical realms of the East, so the offer was usually attached to an arrow and then promptly fired over the border where it met an unknown fate. Many would suspect the elves of immediately destroying the parchment each time it was delivered. They had certainly never responded before. What that meant in effect was that the prince in question was given a rare gift. Once the appropriate time was given for Xadia to respond, which of course inevitably lapsed, the prince whose hand was offered would become free of their obligation. Free to marry anyone they wished.
