Two things woke Inuyasha up from an unusually deep sleep that night. First was the sound of thunder clapping loudly outside of the hut. The other was a whimpering noise that took a second for him to realize was his wife laying next him in their shared futon. "Kagome? What's wrong?" He sat up and whispered to her tentatively.
"N-nothing!" She stuttered out. Kagome was laying with her back to him in a fetal position with her hands over her ears and her eyes shut tight. "I'm fine!" He stared at her unbelieving then sighed and laid on his side.
"Turn around..."
"I said I'm -"
"Stop being stubborn and just do it already!" When she begrudgingly did, he put his arms around her to hold her close. One hand cradled her head while the other was pressed against her lower back in a gentle yet firm hold. "It's thunder. Don't get why you're so upset." Inuyasha mumbled into her hair as he nuzzled his nose into its thick, dark locks.
"I don't know either. I was never scared of storms before now!" Another clap of thunder struck somewhere nearby. Kagome winced, her hands clawing at his haori as a small whine came from her.
"You're trembling," He whispered softly and held her closer. "Need my haori?" She shook her head and exhaled.
"N-no, that's okay. Just being in your arms helps a lot actually."
"Maybe the difference is where you are," Inuyasha suggested. "Your old world had so much more safety when it came to these things, and you were used to the noise. Here there's no buffer between you." What he said made sense to her, but she still hated feeling like such a weakling over just a few bolts of thunder. Especially having way more knowledge about these things than the people of this era. "Shhh..." He tried his best to sooth her by peppering her temple and forehead with light kisses.
"Were you ever afraid of anything like this?" She expected him to huff at what he would deem a silly question, saying 'Of course not! I've never been afraid of anything like that!' But to her surprise, he didn't deny it.
"Yeah, I was. When I was little, I was terrified of these kinds of storms, mostly because of my demonic hearing. It was so loud and I wasn't expecting it. I would do exactly what you were doing, covering my ears in fear."
"How'd you get over it?" He shrugged nonchalantly.
"I got used to it. Didn't really have a choice," Inuyasha answered. He was quiet for a moment before exhaling. "That's not totally true. It was mostly my mother that helped me with it. She would hold me just like this." His voice was so thoughtful during the rare times he brought his Mother up. Picturing a little Inuyasha cuddled up to his mom and taking comfort in her embrace was such a sweet image. It always made Kagome feel so warm inside. "She would always tell me that everything would be okay because all storms pass."
"The few times I've seen her, it always struck me just how much you take after her," She reached her hand to touch his cheek. "You're shaped just like her. Your face, your eyes and the way your hair lay, even though it's messy," With a playful giggle, her hand moved up to his hair to thread her fingers through his bangs. Inuyasha grunted but made no effort to stop her. "I think it's where you got your sweetness from too!"
"Sweetness?! Where the hell have you been this whole time?!" He yelled back. Kagome laughed again at his embarrassed blush.
"Right here, with you!" She answered happily and snuggled herself further into his chest. Already, she had forgotten her earlier fears.
"Better?"
"Much! Just being here in your arms was more than enough for me. I'm happy." He tipped her chin up to give her a long, loving kiss.
"Me too. Try to get some rest. We have an early start tomorrow." She took in his earthy scent and the warmth that always emanated from his body even through all the layers he wore. It soothed her soul, and soon she was able to fall into a restful sleep in his arms. Seeing her so peaceful was enough to make him drift off comfortably again but not before burying his face further into her hair and taking a calming breath.
