Chapter Text
“This is a very good opportunity for you.” Hanazaki-san said, but the words barely registered in Izuku’s mind. “Yes, you’ll be gone for a while and your ranking will drop a little at first but after the mission it’s nowhere but up!”
“I see…” Izuku pondered. “I-I think I need some time to think about it.”
“What is there to think about?” The Agency’s manager asked. “This is the opportunity we have been waiting for to further our career.”
Hanazaki always had the tendency to say ‘we’ and ‘our’ when talking about Deku’s career, which of course was annoying, especially when the older man was trying to push Izuku into doing whatever he wanted.
“You don’t even have a girlfriend or someone to leave.”
Izuku sighed, while true that didn’t mean he didn’t have people such as his friends, his mom, and All Might that he would miss if he left for a year. “I don’t know.”
“If this is about your partner Dynamight, I’m sure I can find her a competent partner while you’re away!” Hanazaki rushed to say.
Izuku bit his lip, uncertain.
Truth be told, his apprehension had very much to do with Katsuki, Deku’s relationship with her had changed. They were still friends, best friends even, as they had been since they resolved things between them in high school, but lately, Izuku felt they were different .
He couldn’t explain it, as it often happened when Kacchan was involved, but there had been some sort of…electricity between them, that’s the only way Izuku could explain it.
And Izuku was hopeful because he had spent the better part of a decade desperately in love with his childhood friend and the notion he had a chance with the most amazing woman in the world had him literally floating.
However, Izuku couldn’t risk what he had with Katsuki for mere hope, because that was all it was, a soul-crushing maybe .
“...You know Midoriya-san.” Hanazaki-san suddenly said in an overly serious tone “Sometimes we need time to get over our issues and move on .” He emphasized.
Maybe it was time to move on.
“I…Ok. I’ll think about it, Hanazaki-san.” Izuku said, though uncertainty still crept into the corners of his mind.
“Wonderful hero Deku!” Hanzaki smiled broadly. “Your skills will definitely be useful for this mission.”
———
“So? What did he say? Did he give you one of his ‘it’s time we think about our career' speeches?” Katsuki asked as she strutted with confidence into the training room for their weekly sparing. “Fuck I hate those.” She said as she stretched.
“Err…no, I mean, kind of?” Izuku answered, trailing behind her into the room. “He offered me to go on this big classified undercover mission.”
“What, really? Motherfucker!” She frowned. “Why does he give you all the cool missions while I'm stuck with the petty crime shit!” Katsuki fumed. “What is it about then?”
“Something about a quirk drug trafficking ring.” Izuku answered.
“You lucky piece of shit.” Katsuki snarled as she got into a fighting position.
Izuku mirrored her. “Yeah, he said I would be perfect for the job because of the versatility of my quirk.” They started sparring, trading well-practiced blows with each other.
Katsuki scoffed as she threw a punch Izuku barely managed to dodge. “Of course you and your 30 quirks are good for undercover work, you just need to dye your hair and you’re a new person.” She managed to pin Deku to the ground. “How long would this mission be for anyway?”
“T-that’s the problem.” He said as he managed to flip Katsuki over. “It’s kind of a long mission.”
“What 4 to 5 months?” Katsuki said, rolling away from underneath Izuku.
“A year or more.”
She froze and Izuku stilled too, now sensing a change in her light mood. “What!? A year? What the fuck am I supposed to do for a year?! Sit on my ass because they won’t send me out without a partner?”
“K-Kacchan! Of course the agency is going to give you a new partner.” Deku tried to placate her, but that statement only made her look even angrier.
Katsuki stood up, trembling in anger. In another world she would swallow her pride and confess she didn’t want another partner, not when it came to heroics and not when it came to life . Unfortunately, pride always got the best of her and she just glared at Izuku and stomped away, leaving Izuku confused as to why she was mad at him.
———
Things were strained between them for the next couple of days, Katsuki was unusually cold and dry with Deku, who had no idea why his childhood friend was mad at him.
“I mean it’s fucking obvious why I’m mad at him!” Katsuki complained as she drank her weight in alcohol with her friends. “I just don’t understand why he wants to leave me.” She whined, clearly not as sober anymore.
“Bakubro, maybe you should confess, you know now that he is going away there’s little to lose.” Kirishima suggested
“Yeah babes! The man is not a mind reader, how can he know you’re mad at him because you love him and don’t want him to go away for so long?” Mina said, drinking her pink cocktail.
“Honestly like Kiri said, there’s no better chance than now to confess, even if he says no, when he comes back you can just tell him you got over him, even though we all know that’s not going to happen.” Sero said.
“But what if I ruin our friendship with this?” Katsuki asked, twirling her thumb around her full glass.
“You and Midoriya have been obsessed about each other for years if not decades, of course he is going to say yes!” Mina said with brutal honesty. “What if he meets someone else on this mission? You would lose your chance Kat, I say you fucking grow some ovaries and tell him you want to stick your tongue down his throat.”
That got Katsuki making a fierce nod of determination. “You’re fucking right, I’m gonna grow some balls and confess!” The Bakusquad cheered as they clinked their glasses together. Katsuki downed her drink at a record rate and stood up. “I’m going to confess right now!” Her friends tried to protest that she could wait until she was sober but she practically ran out the door toward Izuku’s apartment.
Once there she pounded the door with a determined glare.
Deku opened the door shortly after. “K-Kacchan? What are you doing here so late?”
“Shut up.” Katsuki ignored him and barged into his home and took her shoes off (obviously, she wasn’t an animal).
“...Are you still mad at me?” Izuku asked
Katsuki frowned further. “Yes, I’m so fucking mad at you, why are you such an idiot!” She fumed.
“You can’t be mad at me and not tell me why!” Deku retorted.
“I don’t want you to go on that year-long mission.” Katsuki stated, now blushing, whether the alcohol she had was catching up to her or the fact that she was confessing to the man she loved was unclear. “I don’t want you to go because….because!...” She hesitated, avoiding his gaze. “Because I love you.” She said almost in a whisper, feeling her heart in her throat.
“W-what?” Izuku’s voice trembled, thinking he may have misheard her.
“I fucking love you, you dumbass!” Katsuki cried embarrassed.
Deku crushed her in a hug, sobbing like the crybaby he had always been. “I-I love you too Kacchan, I’ve always loved you!” They parted and he kissed her softly on the lips. “Wait…y-you taste like alcohol, are you drunk?” His stomach sank, thinking Katsuki was just drunk.
The blonde punched him lightly on the arm. “Yes I drank, but I’m not drunk, so whatever your shitty brain is thinking ain’t happening, I love you, I have for years now, so don’t you dare reject me because you think this is the alcohol speaking.” She crashed their lips together once again as she led both of them to the bedroom.
Just as they fell to the bed Izuku cradled her face lovingly. “Kacchan, can I really have you?”
Katsuki’s eyes shone beautifully. “Are you going away? A lot can happen in a year.” She was insecure about where their relationship would go from there.
Izuku shook his head. “I don’t care about that mission anymore if I can’t go with you.” He said. “I have wanted to be with you for so long, there’ll be other missions, now that I know you want me too I can’t be away from you.” He started seriously before kissing her deeply.
Katsuki laced her arms around his neck, deepening the kiss and sinking into his warmth.
They spent the weekend in each other’s embrace, bathing in sweet promises.
———
Izuku is so fucking happy, he is practically floating.
Even if he had to go to work earlier than usual just to talk to his boss and reject the offer on the drug trafficking mission. Another hero can go do that while Izuku enjoys his new relationship with the love of his life.
Regardless, it looks like much to his chagrin, crime doesn’t take vacations for anyone.
“My purse!” An elderly woman cried a few steps in front of Deku as a masked man ran into an alley.
Naturally, he goes after him, lighting up in his usual green hues as Izuku chases the villain, easily cornering him in the alley and restraining him. However before Deku can put on anti-quirk handcuffs on the villain, he speaks.
“Night night, Mr. Hero~” The villain smirked, his dark eyes twinkling in mischief.
Izuku felt weak all of a sudden, losing his grip on the other man and collapsing to the ground, his last thought being Katsuki. Then he blacks out.
“Sir, sir! ” A voice was barely audible in the distance. “Are you ok?!”
Izuku felt as though he was underwater, but slowly he regained consciousness.
“Sir, do you need an ambulance?!” The man with dark eyes asked with a worried expression
“…oh my god, where am I?” Izuku rubbed his sore head. “What happened?”
“I don’t know, I found you collapsed here on the street.” The villain said.
“Oh, uh, sorry for the inconvenience…” Izuku said and stood up looking at the time on his wrist clock. He had to go to work although he was unusually early. Why was he going so early to the agency again? Must have not been really that important.
Regardless Deku got to the agency and promptly got called to Hanazaki-san’s office.
“So what was it that you wanted to tell me about your decision about the undercover mission?” Hanazaki said as he sat at his desk after welcoming Izuku in
“Huh? What about it?” Izuku asked, confused, although he couldn't shake the feeling he had forgotten something.
“…This morning you asked me to meet you today because you were going to tell me if you are going to take the year long mission.”
“Oh…uh yes, I’ll take it.” Izuku answered with confusion on why he couldn’t remember the said conversation. Maybe he was working too hard like Kacchan kept insisting.
“I’m very glad to hear you say that! This will do wonders for our career here, believe me!”
At first, Deku is worried about patrol, since Katsuki has been angry at him for some reason, which added to the fact he was going away for a year or more the following day. Surprisingly Bakugou was in a good mood, like whatever reason she had been angry at Izuku disappeared. Deku was glad for this, the last thing he wanted was for Bakugou to stay mad at him for a year, which knowing her was 100% possible.
Katsuki was even unusually happy.
“Why are you so happy Kacchan?” He asked toward the end of the patrol.
“Don’t be so cocky, shitty nerd.” Katsuki looked at him with shining eyes and rolled her eyes, though she smiled as she blustered in a ‘you already know’ fashion.
Izuku was just relieved that Bakugou was not mad at him anymore. Until the next day when Izuku was about to board the plane and he received a text from Katsuki
“How dare you do this to me?!” It read, making Deku’s eyes widen as he received another text. “NEVER speak to me again, I fucking hate you.”
Any subsequent text from Deku was answered with a simple “Fuck you.” Izuku boarded the plane for the mission, with no idea why Katsuki is so angry at him.
———
How could she be so stupid?! That is the only question rounding Katsuki’s mind as she read the agency’s notice of her change of partner. Why would she ever believe the man she used to bully would return her feelings? Was this revenge? Maybe her own karma was catching up to her? Regardless of any of it, the fact remained she had been abandoned by the man she loved after being promised the world, because like an idiot she believed him.
And now she was locked up in a fucking bathroom stall crying her eyes out like the pathetic loser she swore she would never be. Katsuki’s only saving grace was her work day was over and at the very least she could go cry in the comfort of her own apartment.
As if she wasn’t already pathetic enough a part of her was waiting for Izuku to text her, maybe even say it was a mistake and he didn’t have to go away, or at the very least reassure her he did mean the things he said, but the opportunity was just too good. But nothing, night came and went but she received not a single word.
Still crying, Katsuki texted Deku the morning he was supposed to take off to the mission, cussing him out before blocking him.
The blonde hero was a wreck for a week, requesting for the first time since her hero career began a few days off. However, on the third day, she was determined not to let this affect her or interfere with her dream of becoming number one.
“I’m a bad bitch, and I won’t let shitty Deku get in my fucking way.” Katsuki’s voice wobbled, but she still fiercely proclaimed her words. “I’m the baddest bitch in the motherfucking world and Deku can go fuck himself.”
Things got better, or so she thought until her period was late.
“It’s…it’s just a day or two late…” She told herself that night after work, staring at her ceiling begging the stars to help her just this once.
A week later, Katsuki’s still late, which can only mean one thing.
She starts to panic, what the fuck is she going to do?! Who the fuck is she supposed to talk to?! Her mom? no, that is a conversation she is very much not ready to have. Kirishima? He was her best friend but there is no doubt in her mind he would be of no help right now.
She called Mina, hysterical, not even sure of what was spilling out of her mouth as soon as the pink-haired woman picked up.
“Babes, babes, calm down, what’s wrong?” Mina asks, concerned because she has never heard her friend so distressed.
Bakugou was still fumbling in a mixture of sobs and mumbled words, breaking once she spoke to another person of what she was going through. “…I’m fucking late. My period is a week late.”
“Oh my god, so you might be…?” Mina trailed off, but they both knew what she meant.
“Yes…come quickly.” Bakugou almost begged she could hear Kirishima in the background of the call asking what was going on. She closed her eyes tightly hoping Mina wouldn’t say anything, of course, the other hero didn’t, shushing her boyfriend and saying she had to go for a few hours. Katsuki let out a relieved sigh.
“I’ll be there in an hour.” True to her word she rushed out to buy pregnancy tests and then to Katsuki’s apartment
“I got three different brands!” Mina exclaimed with nervous energy when she got to the blonde’s apartment. “Oh, honey…” She said as soon as she saw Katsuki in her very disheveled state and puffy eyes. They hugged and once again the blonde broke out crying.
Finally after some time, Mina was able to herd Katsuki to the bathroom and unpacked the pregnancy tests.
“I-I can’t do this!” Katsuki said, shaking as she stood just a few steps into her bathroom holding the numerous pregnancy tests.
“It’s going to be ok, no matter the result you have options, you are going to be ok.” Mina stated, grabbing the crying blonde’s shoulders. “Whatever happens me and the whole bakusquad is going to be with you.”
Bakugou nodded and used the tests.
After a few minutes, she walked out of the bathroom, calmer. “How long do we have to wait?”
“Uhh…” Mina read one of the boxes the test came in. “about five minutes.”
They sat in silence for a few seconds.
“So…who is, I mean who were you with, for you to suspect this type of thing?” Mina asked.
“I confessed to Deku, and he said he loved me too.” Bakugou said, voice breaking at the end. “He said he wasn’t leaving me now that he knew I love him, that he would take me on a date on our next day off, that he promised to stay with me for as long as I liked.” She continued before scoffing a watery laugh. “Obviously like an idiot, I slept with him and then he fucking left me without a word.”
Mina covered her mouth in horror. “...Oh my god Kats that awful, what an asshole.” She was surprised by the uncharacteristic behavior of her former classmate.
Just then Mina’s phone alerted them that five minutes had passed and the results were ready. Bakugou started shaking. “I can’t look at them.”
“It’s ok hon, I’ll do it.” Mina looked over, grasping Katsuki’s hand tightly.
She said nothing for a few seconds.
Katsuki had her eyes tightly shut. “What does it say?”
“T-they are all positive.”
Bakugou collapsed on the ground crying and the pink woman kneeled with her, comforting Katsuki as best she could silently cursing the man that had hurt her friend.
