Chapter Text
Blaine walked down the hall, arm in arm with his favorite girl, Tina. She was excitedly chattering about some sale or another and laying down plans for a subsequent trip to the mall. Normally Blaine would be listening (or at least trying to) but right now his mind was completely elsewhere.
In front of him stood the glorious Kurt Hummel, taking books out of his locker and hairspraying his perfectly coiffed hair. He was long and lean with perfect alabaster skin and wearing a cheerio uniform that did everything to enhance his most desirable features. He had a sharp jaw, high cheekbones and the most gorgeous blue eyes Blaine had ever seen. His lips looked so soft and pink and-
“Hey dudes!” Sam came up behind them throwing his arms around them both and almost making Blaine trip and drop all his books. Blaine noticed Kurt turn towards the noise and his cheeks reddened instantly.
“Hey Sam,” Tina said laughing and Blaine mumbled something in agreement, his eyes downcast.
When he looked up again Kurt was walking away.
He sighed as he watched him disappear around the corner. He had had a crush on him for two years now and he was no closer to actually talking to him now than he had been at the beginning.
“Hello. Earth to Blaine.” Sam waved his hand in front of his eyes. Blaine startled and looked up.
Tina rolled her eyes. “Don’t bother, he’s pining over Kurt again.”
“Am not,” Blaine said stubbornly and adjusted his books in his hands.
“Dude, you share a class, just talk to him!” Sam exclaimed. “Ask him to loan you a pencil or something.” Their patience for Blaine’s crush had begun to dwindle about a year and a half ago.
“I can’t just talk to him Sam, he’s-” Blaine huffed out. “I’ll stutter and blush and it’ll just weird him out.”
“You don’t know that.” Tina said sympathetically.
“Yes I do.” Blaine argued. “I do it when I’m just looking at him, if he’s in front of me and actually speaking to me, I’m pretty sure I’ll faint.”
Tina chuckled and Sam sighed. “Okay then, do what you want.” Sam said. “But he’s just a guy, he doesn’t bite.” He leaned in closer. “Unless he does,” he stage whispered.
Blaine pushed him off with an indignant scoff and Sam went off laughing to his next class.
“He’s not just a guy,” he said, annoyed to Tina.
Tina patted him on the back. “I know, I know, he’s your guy.”

The class Blaine shared with Kurt was History, fourth period with Mrs. Walters in room 12. It was a class Blaine both dreaded and looked forward to the most. By some miracle or misfortune his regular seat was directly behind Kurt
After a long and monotonus lecture about the beginning of the Great Depression (of which Blaine did not hear a word) Mrs. Waltes concluded her class with an announcement. “Alright class.” she clapped her hands. “Today we will begin our project about the Great Depression. Of course, if you have read my syllibus you already know about it.”
Blaine paused. He had not read the syllibus.
“As you know,” Mrs. Walters continued, “you will not be working alone. Front, third, and fifth row, look at the person behind you. That is your partner for this project.”
Blaine froze in his seat. His face grew hot as Kurt Hummel slowly turned around and gave him a neutral look.
“Hey, Blaine right?” Blaine’s heart skipped a beat. He didn’t trust himself to talk so he just hummed his approval. Kurt Hummel knows his name.
The bell rang and Blaine jumped. Mrs. Walters cleared her throat. “Okay guys, this will largely be an independent project. Find time outside of school to meet up with your partner and prepare.”
Kurt turned around and started packing his things. “I have cheerio practice today but we can meet up tomorrow to continue.”
“O-okay.” Blaine stammered out.
“Great. Give me your phone.” Kurt held out his hand.
Blaine blinked at him before digging his hand in his pocket and fishing out his phone. He handed it to him wordlessly.
Kurt typed in it and gave it back. “Text me so I have your number too and I’ll text you my address.” He gave him a small smile and walked out of the class.
Blaine looked after him. He was almost afraid to look at his phone, as if that would make Kurt’s number vanish. But when he finally did he saw Kurt’s number in his contacts under “Kurt - history”. Blaine quickly deleted “- history” and stared at the contact. Simply seeing “Kurt” there made his whole body feel warm and tingly.
The bell rang again and only then did Blaine realize he was the only one left in the classroom. He hadn’t even begun packing his things.
He came late to math class but he couldn’t bring himself to care. All he could focus on was the steady weight of his phone burning a hole in his pocket.

When he came home he ran straight to his room and closed the door. He sat on the bed as he pulled his phone out and just stared at it.
Kurt had told him to text him. He just kept staring.
What the hell do I text? The question took over his mind, blocking out all possible answers.
Typing in the text box seemed too risky so he opened his notes app. His fingers hovered over the keyboard. He slowly typed. “Hey, this is Blaine from History class! You told me to text you so here you go!”
He immediately erased it.
Different variations of the same vague greeting and explanations were typed and deleted over the next 20 minutes. Blaine groaned and buried his face in the pillows. He rolled over and brought the phone to his face once more before quickly typing out “Hey, it’s Blaine from history :)”.
He silently counted to three before copy-pasting it into Kurt’s text box. His finger hesitated over the send button.
He huffed out. This is so stupid. His finger hit send.
The regret came instantly.

It never came.
