Work Text:
“Welcome to McDonald’s drive-thru, how may I help you?”
God.
Violet hated that fucking phrase. She’s already said it in her forced-and-totally-not-fake cheery customer service voice at least 15 times in her current shift, and probably a million other times in her shifts before. She just sounded so fucking fake, her girlfriend probably wouldn’t believe this is the same Violet she’s dating, and is instead probably some poor soul brainwashed by Ronald McDonald himself wearing her girlfriend's face
The customer in the intercom seemed thoughtful for a bit, and all that can be heard is some shuffling of wheels. Violet glanced at the cameras; shitty ones, where there’s barely any color and it’s so pixelated you can barely tell if a figure is a person or just a bunch of blocks. But it still did its job somehow, and Violet just pretty much filled the blanks with what she saw. The customer seemed to be a girl, maybe around her age. She seemed to just be standing there, in a drive-thru , until Violet spotted what looked like a skateboard next to her.
Were skateboards even allowed in drive-thrus…?
Whatever. It had wheels, you can ride on it, and Violet isn’t paid nearly enough to care otherwise.
“Hmm, a ten piece nugget please.” The voice was sweet, and confident, and made Violet’s heart skip a beat…somehow.
“With fries and drinks?”
“No thanks, just the nuggets.”
Well, she couldn’t argue with that. Not that she wanted to.
Once the payment was made, the customer rolled up to the drive-thru window with, not to Violet’s surprise, a skateboard. She was a little impressed actually, and she found it a little cool. Not everyone has the balls to bring a skateboard in a drive-thru, not to mention it’s cheaper without the gas. The girl also really was about her age; with darker skin, brown curly hair, and the most striking amber eyes she’d ever seen. She also wore a blue baseball cap underneath her helmet; not very safe, but the hat might’ve been too important for her to take off. Maybe that's something to admire too. “Here’s your order. Have a nice day.”
The girl smiled and gladly took the bag, their fingers brushing slightly, just a bit. Violet felt her breath hitch, just a bit, but she ignored it. Who cares if the girl in front of her is totally hot with the prettiest eyes she’d ever seen?
“Thank you,” the girl said, still with a smile, before skating away.
Violet sighed as she shut the window.
Damn.
Not only does she have to deal with assholes and asshats on the daily, but pretty girls too?
She really is not paid enough for this.
-
20 minutes later, Violet notices a new customer in the drive-thru. She groaned at the thought of having to deal with a customer again, maybe some Karen or some other asshole. Those people were not a rare sight in places like these, after all.
“Welcome to McDonald’s, how-”
“Can I get some large fries? That’s all, please.”
Violet blinked.
It sounded like the same girl from earlier.
After the payment has been done and over with, Violet waits for the customer in the drive-thru window, and there’s no doubt now as she could hear the familiar skidding noise of a skateboard fast approaching, before she’s greeted with the same sweet smile, same curly hair, and same mesmerizing golden eyes.
“Here’s your order.” Violet handed the paper bag to the customer.
The customer gladly accepted her order, before opening the bag to make sure things were in order, as well as…”Thanks, but also-” she looked into the bag, only to find there were already extra ketchup packets waiting for her. “Oh. Nevermind. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Violet almost beamed, she’s high-fiving herself for that one. “Have a nice day.”
The girl smiled and nodded, before skating off yet again. This time, Violet let the window open for a bit instead of shutting it off immediately, as she looked over at the girl skating away.
-
“Welcome to-”
“A large iced coffee please.”
The same girl.
Violet found herself unintentionally smiling at the thought of seeing the girl again, but her smile faded into her usual frown as her coworker had this shit-eating grin while he handed her the order.
“Someone’s smitten.”
“I’m going to shove your face into the fry grease.”
Louis only laughed. He was the only other coworker her age in the branch, and pretty much her only friend. Unlike Vi, Louis didn’t really care for the shit pay, not as much as she did anyway. His family was filthy rich and his parents only made him work his own allowance after he did some stupid shit last year. So he didn’t really take his job seriously, and mostly used his time at work to talk to Violet or focus on his music.
She rolled her eyes before turning back to the window. The girl was already there, finishing off the last of her fries. “Hi,” that smile again.
Violet was not fucking smitten.
“H-hey,” Violet managed out, almost forgetting to give the drink to the customer. “Oh, shit. Sorry, here you go.”
The girl laughed. It was a pleasant laugh, unlike Louis’ shit-eating laugh that made her want to tear her hair out. Violet liked her laugh. “It’s fine. Thanks.” She winked as she received the beverage, set her skateboard back down, and skated away as she sipped on her iced coffee.
Violet blinked.
The girl winked.
Holy shit.
The girl winked.
God. Violet closed the drive-thru window and exhaled the breath she didn’t realize she held in during the interaction.
Fine, maybe she’s a little fucking smitten.

Clementine sat quietly in the fast food chain parking lot, making a makeshift seat out of some curb stop in an empty parking spot. Her skateboard sat next to her and she was sipping out of her iced coffee, made just the way she liked it, even if coffee places usually messed it up. Not Mcdonald’s though, not this branch especially, since one of the few people who knew how to make coffee just the way she liked it is…
“Any room for dessert?”
Clementine looked up and smiled. Violet was out of her work clothes, waving around a paper bag. “Hey, Vi,” she said, scooting to the left of the curb stop to make space for her new companion.
Violet happily returned the smile as she plopped down to sit next to Clementine, who wasted no time to lean towards Vi and give her a peck on the lips, to which it was reciprocated. The blonde girl then dug into the paper bag to pull out a Mcflurry, one that she made sure to put as much Oreos as humanly possible, the way both of them liked it. She dug the spoon into the ice cream and ate some.
“Done with your shift?”
“Yeah,” Violet answered, spoon still in her mouth, before she handed the cold treat to Clementine, spoon included.
“How was it? Hope there weren’t any assholes again.”
Vi pretended to be thoughtful, tapping her chin. “Nope. A pretty girl came by though, a couple of times. Made my shift feel a whole lot better, actually.”
Clementine smiled, the same smile that would make anyone swoon, and apparently, Violet is no exception. “Really now.”
The blonde laughed, for the first time today she laughed. “Yeah. Thanks, Clem. really...I just, you know, had a shitty day, and you kept showing up and…shit, yeah, I guess, just seeing you made me feel better.” She kept her eyes on the ground. She wasn’t really great at talking about feelings at all, even being in a relationship now. But she was trying. “I really love you, Clem.”
At first, there was no response, and…shit, it made Vi nervous. Did she go too far? Did she sound too mushy and too cringey? Maybe she shouldn’t have said those things–
But a hand reassuringly clasps her own, and she felt the other hand under her chin, slowly leading her face until her lips clashed with another, and she realized she felt calm and safe, and that’s the only reassurance she needed.
“I love you too, Vi,” said Clementine, deep in thought, after they pulled away from one another, “And...I’ll always be here for you, okay?”
“And I’ll be here for you too, really.”
That seemed to give Clementine an idea. “In that case, stay over my place for the night?”
“Uh, you sure about that? What about-”
“No, nobody’s home right now,” Clementine grinned, “Lee’s on a teaching conference for a few days, Carley’s covering a news story out of state until next week, and AJ’s on a sleepover.”
Violet seemed to think about it for a bit. “You know what? Fuck it, let’s go.”
