Work Text:

"A specific day leads to a devastating death."

Ena wonders what she's done to feel this way.

She's always in her room now. Ena barely went out. She started to attend less Nightcord meetings. What was wrong with her? Nothing happened to her, nothing changed yet there was still a faint ache in her chest. Was it something that was permanent?

She got up from her desk and walked over to her bed. Her pillow was cold, fresh with tears. Ena picked it up and threw it across the room, it hit the wall with a silent thunk.

Her thoughts echoed silently in her head. They wouldn't quiet down, they were simply too loud. There was a hole in her chest, it felt so draining to breathe.

She hated this feeling. She hated being here. She hated everything. Ena stood there, silently listening to the ambience of her room. Her clock was ticking, never missing a single beat. She wished that she could just.. disappear. And her brother? God.. Akito is so fucked up. She reminded herself to go check up on her brother.

She walked up to his door and threw it open. Akito's head snapped up, he was sitting on his bed using his phone.

"Akito. Can you fucking just.. I don't know. Just do something? Please?"

"..."

"You're always in your room. God, even I go out more than you and that's saying something."

"Go away."

Ena slammed the door shut. She slumped down into a sitting position, sighing. Her brother hadn't left his room in a week. She didn't know what to do or say. She knew that he was cutting. He just knew how to hide it well, but not well enough for her to know.

Ena was running out of patience. For life, for Akito, for everything.

During the previous Nightcord meeting, She had snapped at Kanade, Which was almost impossible.

"Enanan, Are you ok? You've been a bit off this meeting. Do you want t-"

Ena cut Kanade off.

"K, can you shut up for once?"

A moment passed by as the call fell into silence. Ena didn't even mean it. She didn't mean to sound so.. mean.

"..."

"..."

There was silence on Mizuki and Mafuyu's end. Ena could only assume that they were also shocked.

"I'm going to get off early."

Ena left before she could hear a proper response. Why did she say that? Why did she lose her cool? God, She was so stupid.

She turned her monitor off and stared at the empty screen. If only she could be better.

-

Ena got up from her chair and walked down the hallway. She knocked on Akito's door.

"Go away."

She swung the door open. Akito was sitting on his bed. He had a frown on his face and god, he looked terrible. He had eyebags and his hair was messed up.

"Are you deaf?"

"No. I just.. wanted to talk."

Ena could have sworn his eyes got a bit bigger, he was scared.

"Well, Hangout. I guess, not talk."

A silent breath of relief. Ena started a conversation about drawing, and Akito quickly picked up on it. Their conversation soon turned into more friendly bickering.

"Hey, Ena."

"Yes?"

"There's a Nintendo 64 in the basement."

"What's that?"

Akito beckoned for Ena to follow him, He led her down the stairs to the basement, Trying to not make a single sound.

There, in the basement, was a very old game console.

"It was Dad's. He said that I could have it. Want me to show you how to play?"

"Yeah."

And so they played for the rest of the night until the sun came back up. It was around three in the morning when Akito suddenly dropped what he was doing.

"Akito?"

"Ena, I love you."

After that, he disappeared up the stairs. She was in shock, Akito rarely says "I love you." Ena could have sworn that his words were strained. She turned off the console and went back up to her room. She wondered why Akito would suddenly say that. About an hour later, Ena decided to find out if he was ok. She knocked on his door gently. No response.

"Akito? It's Ena."

No response. She swung the door open. Akito was sprawled out on the floor, right hand clutching an empty bottle of Prozac. His chest wasn't rising up and down, Ena's brain immediately screamed. She rushed to his side, repeating his name, and shaking him.

She checked his pulse, Nothing. It was like the world had stopped. She buried her face into Akito's chest and cried. She cried like there was no tomorrow. She cried like the world had stopped just for her.

-

There was a note on his bed. Ena grabbed it.

"Dear Ena,

I'm sorry that it had to end like this. I just couldn't go on any longer. I'm sorry for being so damn selfish. I know that you'd probably yell at me but I just couldn't. I'm so tired of living. I'm sorry. I love you, Ena.

PS. You can have the Nintendo 64 and play it all night long.

-Akito."

And another horrible breakdown from Ena happened.

-

She hit Akito, Even though he was already dead. It didn't matter. She hit him for being selfish and not reaching out earlier. She hit him for not telling her. She hit him for leaving her this early.

How could he do this?

It wasn’t fair.

Akito’s clock showed that it was around 5 in the morning. It ticked on and on. The world didn’t stop. Nothing changed, but Ena felt chunks of her heart falling out of place.

ALTERNATIVE ENDING.

There was also something else. Something that glittered on his sheets. The kitchen knife.

Ena wiped her tears. She took the kitchen knife and stared at it. Would she regret this? Would anyone care at all? It didn’t even matter.

"Stupid idiot. If you're going to die then I'm dying with you."

Ena lined up the knife with her heart. It was now or never. Ena just hoped that nobody would care too much that she died.

Ena impaled herself, squeezing her eyelids shut. It felt like a sharp punch into her chest. What was worse? Ena’s blood spilling out all over Akito or that she was in a shit ton of pain?

Seconds went by like hours, Ena’s hands still on the handle of the knife. She felt blood trickle out of her mouth. Soon enough, all she heard was a soft ringing in her ears. She took her last breath, it was painful but she didn’t care. Her body soon went limp and collapsed against Akito’s body.

Akito’s clock ticked. Nothing changed. The world didn't stop for them, the world didn't cry for them. Everything was the same and everything will continue being the same.
