Work Text:
Wednesday walked through her garden. She was trying to shake off her sense of anxiety with the approach of tonight. Her girlfriend, Enid, was coming over tonight. To meet her family. This could go a variety of different ways. In no way was Wednesday ashamed of her family, but she was nervous that Enid would be uncomfortable or get scared by some of their more…unorthodox practices. She finally made her way back to her room and got changed into a black dress. The dinner was supposed to be formal because her parents were coming over as well. Wednesday finished getting ready and headed downstairs.
“You’re dressed nice.” Pugsley said.
“And you should be too Pugsley. They will be here in an hour.”
“You’re awfully nervous about this aren’t you.”
“I feel nothing of the sort.” Wednesday said, feigning calmness. On the inside she was absolutely exploding. Too bad Pugsley could read her like a book.
“You love her.” He teased, drawing out the vowels of the last two words. Wednesday looked away and Pugsley laughed. “You really love her.”
“Are you interested in joining the chicken in the oven for dinner? I’ve always wanted to re-enact Hansel and Gretel.”
“Hint taken.” Pugsley walked off to get dressed. Wednesday moved to set the table. Each place setting was neatly organized and before she knew it everything was ready.
“Oh don’t you look absolutely terrible!” Wednesday’s mother smiled, making her way down the stairs. “My little black dahlia.” She glided over to the kitchen to check on the food. Pugsley and Gomez were in the corner, with Gomez fixing Pugsley’s tie. After a few moments, the doorbell rang. Wednesday steeled her nerves, and opened the door.
To say Enid looked absolutely stunning would be an understatement. She was wearing a light blue dress with light ruffles on the shoulder. It was sleeveless and down to her knees. She had on some blue eyeshadow and was wearing white bracelets and white heels. Wednesday stared.
“Wednesday!” Enid exclaimed, hugging the other girl. They had established that hugs were okay, and Wednesday actually quite enjoyed them, despite feigning annoyance. The two parted and Wednesday stepped aside to allow the group in. Wednesday assessed Enid’s parents and was assaulted by the feeling that something was not right. For starters, her mother was looking around judgingly. Wednesday kept her features impassive, and led the group to the dining room. Morticia and Gomez greeted Enid and her parents, and proceeded to make small talk with her parents. Enid moved toward Wednesday. Pugsley approached.
“Hi, you’re Wednesday’s girlfriend right?” Enid’s eyes widened, and Wednesday did not miss the look she shot toward her parents.
“Uhh yes.” She responded. Enid looked nervous. Pugsley, ever the oblivious, continued.
“She talks about you all the time.” Wednesday glared at her little brother.
“Pugsley, Enid. Enid, Pugsley.” She said motioning to her brother. A smile bloomed on Enid’s face.
“Nice to meet you Pugsley. Does she really?”
“Oh yeah. And she doesn’t talk about anyone. Thing and I had bets placed for months on who would ask the other out. Speaking of, did you perchance ask her out?” Enid stifled a laugh and Wednesday glared more.
“I asked Wednesday out.” Thing, who was sitting on Pugsley’s shoulder, passed him ten dollars. Pugsley glanced at Wednesday.
“I am now starting to debate if ten dollars was worth one of my limbs.” Enid started laughing. “I’ll see myself out before my sister sees to my demise.”
“It’s cute that you think about me.” Wednesday blushed slightly.
“Would you like to take a walk to the garden?” Enid nodded. “Mother!” Wednesday called. “Enid and I will be taking a walk before dinner.” The two headed out, and Wednesday guided Enid through the yard.
“Thank you for inviting me over.”
“Thank you for coming. I know my family can be a bit much sometimes. Please let me know if you get uncomfortable.” Wednesday admitted, slightly nervous. Enid looked offended.
“Your family is amazing! How could I ever get uncomfortable?” Wednesday felt something bloom in her chest.
“Thank you. I believe that might be the first time anyone has ever said that.” Enid smiled. They made their way along the path, chatting about this and that. Wednesday eventually let her hand slip into Enid, who looked positively ecstatic. After a while, the two arrived back at the house and walked to the dining room. Morticia turned to the teens.
“You’re back just in time. Dinner is ready.” The two sat down and food was served. Enid’s mother stared at Wednesday.
“So, Wednesday,” She started, with a questioning tone. “Is it true that you were expelled from your last school?” Enid choked on her drink. Wednesday was unphased.
“Yes. That would be correct.”
“And why would that be?”
“Because I castrated a student.” Enid’s mother’s eyes widened. Wednesday continued. “To be completely honest he was asking for it.” The woman looked scandalized. She opened her mouth to speak, when Enid hastily interrupted.
“So! Pugsley, is it true you’re going to transfer to Nevermore soon?” Her mother glared. Wednesday glared back. Pugsley got the hint.
“YES! Uh- I’m looking forward to it. Although I do hope there won’t be any life threatening ordeals. As much as it would be absolutely wonderful to haunt people, I really do enjoy living.” Enid smiled. The dinner sat in silence before Morticia interjected.
“So, Enid. Wednesday tells me you’re into crochet.”
“Mhm! I actually made her a snood.”
“Oh? I haven’t seen it.”
“It uh- got burnt up in the battle at the end of last year.” Wednesday admitted.
“I have to make you a new one.” Enid smiled.
“Please do. I have to see that. The best part will be that Wednesday’ll wear it. You know. Because she’s in love with you and all.” Pugsley smiled. Suddenly it became so silent you could hear a pin drop. All at once noise filled the room.
“I knew I sensed something off here. Enid, let’s go.”
“No- Mom, that's not what he meant.”
“I will not have you associating with freaks. First refusing to go to camp and now this? We will be having quite the talk, young lady.”
“No- Mom please!” Enid stood up and grabbed her mom’s arm.
“I will not have a- a freak in my household!” She yelled, and Wednesday stood up. How. Dare. You. Wednesday thought. Before she knew it her mouth was open and words were flying out.
“How dare you? How can you come into our home, insult us and our style of living, and then just expect to leave? I quite honestly thought you were smarter than this. Might I remind you I castrated the last person that insulted someone I cared about? So what do you expect to happen to you? A person who not only insulted my whole family, but also one of the most wonderful people in the entire world? Enid means the world to me, and I would gladly commit a murder if it means she would be happy. Of course seeing as you are her parents, I’ll let you off with a warning, and a suggestion that you Take. A. Seat.” She turned to Enid, voice lightening considerably. “Enid, would you like to join me upstairs?” She nodded quietly and went to follow Wednesday, who sent a look to the other Addams’ that said “take care of it’ and led Enid to her room. They sat in awkward silence on Wednesday’s bed. “Hey.” Wednesday finally started.n”I’m sorry if that was too much. I-” Enid interrupted.
“Thank you.”
“What?”
“Thank you. My parents aren’t the most…supportive. As you can uh- tell. I’m sorry they called you a freak.”
“I’ve been called worse. And to be completely honest, I mainly take it as a compliment. Normal has never been my thing. I do hope I didn’t scare you though?”
“You didn’t scare me at all.” She mumbled something after that.
“What was that? I didn’t hear you.” She mumbled again. “Enid, you need to speak up. Whatever it is, I'll be okay.” Enid put her head in her hands and spoke.
“It was actually really hot, okay?! Don’t laugh at me!”
“What?” Wednesday said, surprised. “You found me threatening your parents…hot.”
“Maybe?” She responded. “Listen-” Wednesday was smugly smiling.
“I knew I loved you for a reason.” Enid started to laugh. Wednesday turned and kissed her on the cheek. “You’re very cute sometimes, Enid.” She stood up and moved to her closet. “I suppose now is as good a time as any for this kind of thing.”
“What thing?”
“I have something for you. I was going to wait until later, but I think this is a good time too.” She took a small box down from her shelf. She sat down on the bed and opened the box to reveal a white flower necklace. Upon a closer look, it matched the black flower necklace that Wednesday had on her neck.
“Are these matching necklaces?” Enid asked. Wednesday nodded. “Thank you Wednesday!” She hugged the other girl.
“Do you like it?”
“I love it!” Wednesday let out a breath.
“Okay good.” Enid paused.
“You were nervous about this?” Wednesday nodded. “Of course I love it. I love you. ” Enid smiled and they shared a quick kiss. Wednesday helped Enid put it on. “I’m sorry tonight didn’t go as planned. I had hoped we could do more stuff.” Enid sighed.
“We can still do things. I have a feeling your parents have retired to the basement.”
“What does that mean?”
“Oh nothing.” The moon was beginning to rise. “Would you like me to play you something?” Wednesday asked, motioning to her cello.
“Yes please!” And so she took her seat and began to play. They talked as she did, and Wednesday even tried to teach Enid how to play, but after failing miserably a few times, they decided to do something else. Wednesday opened her window and moved to step out. “What are you doing?” Enid asked cautiously.
“It’s completely safe.” She stepped onto a thicker branch of the tree outside her window and smiled, extending her hand for Enid. When the other girl took it and stepped out, they both settled down and sat, swinging their legs back and forth. Pugsley ran out underneath them and looked up. He smirked.
“Wednesday and Enid sitting in a tree!” He began. Wednesday reached into a nook of the tree and took out a crossbow.
“Pugsley get away from me.” She finished.
“I’m not scared of you!” He yelled.
“You should be.” She replied darkly. A voice came from inside the house.
“Pugsley stop torturing your sister, there will be plenty of time for that later.”
“Yes mom! Anyway, I brought you two ice cream.”He threw a carton of vanilla ice cream followed by two spoons.
“What about the bowls?” Wednesday asked. He shrugged.
“You two are basically married anyway. Sharing ice cream won’t kill you.”
“It might kill you later!” Wednesday offered. He stuck out his tongue and ran into the house. Wednesday shook her head as she watched him go.
“You really love your family don’t you?” Enid smiled. It was nice seeing Wednesday so comfortable. She nodded.
“We’re a little unorthodox sometimes, but I think it’s better this way.” They stared up at the stars for a while, taking bites of ice cream.
“I think this is the most stars I’ve ever seen in my whole life.”
“Really?” Wednesday asked.
“Yeah.” She responded.
“Do you know your constellations?”
“No.” Enid answered. Wednesday pointed to a group of stars.
“That’s Ursa Major.” And another. “That’s Ursa Minor. You can see the North Star is right there. It’s called Polaris.”
“Where did you learn all this?”
“My Uncle Fester taught me.” Wednesday took a spoonful of ice cream.
“I would love to meet him sometime.”
“I would enjoy that.” The two looked at various constellations for a while, with bites of ice cream in between before eventually falling into a comfortable silence. “Wednesday and Enid sitting in a tree.” Wednesday said suddenly. Enid smiled and opened her mouth to say something before Wednesday leaned forward and kissed her. It was long and sweet, with both tasting like vanilla ice cream. Enid started laughing through the kiss. Wednesday pulled back. “What?”
“First of all, great use of that rhyme.” She said, “And second of all your mouth is really cold.”
“We were just eating ice cream.”
“Yeah but it was surprising.”
“You’re surprising.”
“How am I surprising?”
“You thought me threatening your family was hot.”
“You’re never going to let me live that down are you?”
“No I don’t think I will.”
“Fine. Then you owe me more ice cream.”
“Come over more often and you have yourself a deal.”
“WHY DON’T YOU JUST MOVE IN!” Yelled a voice from inside.
“How many fingers would you like to lose tonight, Pugsley?!” Wednesday yelled back.
“DID YOU CONVINCE HER TO MOVE IN YET WEDNESDAY?” Gomez yelled from inside. Wednesday facepalmed.
“My family likes you a lot.” She sighed. Enid was frozen. Suddenly she burst out laughing. “Yes yes have your laugh. Meanwhile they’re probably going to make me look at engagement rings after you leave.”
“Who says I won’t be the one proposing first?” Wednesday’s eyes widened and then narrowed playfully.
“Game on Sinclair.”
“I love you Wednesday.” Enid sighed.
“I love you too Enid. More than anything else in the world.”
