Work Text:
"Hey, can I come in?", Jin's voice was heard from the doorframe.
"Of course, hyung", Jungkook said, as Jin's head peeked inside before he entered.
"I asked since you might be busy with a case and...", Jin trailed off. He knew that the leads are confidential, so he didn't want to accidentally see anything.
"Since when are you asking? You usually barge in, hyung", Yoongi raised an eyebrow.
"Well, you got me there", Jin chuckled.
"Your shift starts soon?", Hoseok asked.
"Yeah, I wanted to drop by and see you guys before clocking in", Jin nodded. "Also, a birdie told me some great news", he smirked at Yoongi.
"That's a very talkative bird", Yoongi pretended to glare at Jimin, who was not returning the older's gaze, while trying to hold in his laugh.
"Great news deserves to be shared!", Jin exclaimed. "Lieutenant Min "
"It's not official yet", Yoongi protested.
"The ceremony is in 5 days, hyung", Taehyung mumbled. "I'd say it's pretty much official"
"Are you relocating?", Jin wondered.
"Are you gonna miss me, you love me that much?", Yoongi said with a smug look on his face. "I'm not going anywhere, all of you are stuck with me". Jin mumbled yes I do under his breath. "Love you too, hyung", he scrunched his nose.
"I wouldn't wanna have it any other way", Jin smiled. "Alright, that's enough. I'm leaving now"
"Go save some lives, hyung", Namjoon patted him on the back.
"Right back at you", the oldest waved over his shoulder as he walked away. As soon as he was out of sight, one of the desk phones rang, the boys glancing at it before looking at each other.
"Looks like we're up already", Jimin said before he picked it up.
"Where do you need us?", Yoongi asked, as he and the other boys walked up to the incident commander, exchanging bows.
"Thank you for coming so quickly", he replied. His name tag read 'Deputy District Chief Kong Sanwoo'. "We have been after an offender for a week now. He was spotted around here, but my district is under-staffed after the recent building fire...", his voice trailed off at the memory, his voice solemn. A few days ago, the 17th district's building had caught on fire, trapping inside and claiming the lives of all police officers that had remained behind, while Kong and his team, along with some patrol officers, were out on call. More than 50 officers died that day, but the ones who had to carry on living didn't want to get more than 2-3 days off, saying that the civilians need them (and they could use the distraction)... Neither the city nor the police academy has managed to appoint new officers in such a short notice, yet they have managed to secure another building as a touchbase, and are slowly getting back on their feet. "Would really appreciate it if you could join us on the knock-and-talk", he gestured around the neighborhood, no civilians having stepped outside as there was no commotion.
"Of course", Yoongi said, the others nodding. They all exchanged bows, before they formed duos and went their separate ways.
"I'm sorry I called you all this way for nothing", the Deputy District Chief sighed regretfully, after they were done with the search.
"Sir, please, it's okay", Taehyung shook his head.
"And it wasn't for nothing ", Hoseok corrected. "No civilians were harmed and we know he didn't come here"
"He 'll show on radar at some point", Jimin smiled encouragingly.
"Thank you", Chief Kong smiled back.
"Feel free to call on us if you need assistance again, and also to let us know when you catch him . We know you will, Chief", Namjoon inquired.
"I appreciate it", Chief Kong lowered his head. "Will do"
"Have a safe shift, sir", Jungkook said as all boys bowed. "We're hoping for good news"
"You, too", the chief bowed back, before the boys got in the cars and returned to their station.
"Don't bother", Sergeant Chae shook her head as soon as she saw them enter through the front door. "You're going back out there"
"Where was he seen, Sergeant?", Hoseok asked, catching on the vibe.
"Indigo Plaza", Sergeant Chae replied.
"Say no more", Yoongi spoke over his shoulder as they were running out the door. After arriving at the plaza, they searched the place, which proved to be difficult with all the civilians roaming around, and there was no sign of him .
"Splitting up to cover more ground?", Jungkook suggested.
"Copy that", came from his five hyungs, before they formed 3 duos and split up. They were too far from each other to hear the two youngests getting attacked.
Taehyung was awaken by a slap to the face. Awaken ?! He didn't remember blacking out. His whole body and his face was in pain, as he squirmed and tried to take in his situation. He was loosely tied up, the rope falling off as he sat up. Weird ... Glancing around, he tried not to show his shock with what he saw. Ahead of him was Jungkook, also beaten up, on his knees, his head down as if he was unconscious, his hands tied up at the wrists and held upwards, a man standing behind him and holding the ropes up.
"Rise and shine", the man snorted, glaring at Taehyung.
"H-Hyung", Jungkook lifted his head up in surprise. Taehyung's stomach dropped when he saw his only dongsaeng with a black eye, a broken nose, torn lips, scarlet liquid trickling down his chin. He couldn't tell how bad any other possible injuries were due to the semi-darkness and the younger's dark clothes covering almost every inch of skin.
"I'm okay", Taehyung reassured. "You?", his eyes didn't leave the younger's, the latter nodding. "Let him go", his tone was harsh, the words directed at the man behind Jungkook.
"You're in no position to make demands", the man scoffed.
"Let him go", Taehyung requested. He didn't make a move to get on his feet, not wanting to aggravate him and cause Jungkook more harm. "Take me instead"
"What-", the man blurted out, failing to hide his surprise.
"Take me instead", Taehyung repeated. "You have my word, as a police officer, that I won't try anything funny. All I want is for him to be out of harm's way", he nodded towards Jungkook.
"What a noble sacrifice", the man teased. "You do have me intrigued, not gonna lie", he eyed Taehyung up and down. "Fine, I'll untie him, you come here". Taehyung nodded.
"Jungkook, don't do anything", Taehyung said, slowly getting up and just as slowly making his way towards the man, who was untying Jungkook.
"You didn't make any rush moves, I see", the man observed, his eagle eyes following Taehyung's movements, until the boy was standing next to Jungkook. The man shoved Jungkook to the left, still staring at Taehyung to see his reaction, while Taehyung wanted to run and check on Jungkook but stayed still.
"I said I wouldn't try anything funny, I needed to prove it", Taehyung replied. He knew the man had his gun (Jungkook's too), so he didn't wanna risk any shots firing.
"That's a first", the man snarled, before he punched him in the stomach. Taehyung groaned, almost doubling over.
"Hyung!", Jungkook exclaimed, trying to find some strength, to hopefully get up and be ready to defend himself and Taehyung.
"I'm fine", Taehyung rushed, his voice strained. "Go"
"Hyung-", Jungkook was cut off.
"Go!", Taehyung shooed him away with a nod of the head, as the man was tying his hands behind his back and kicked him in the back of the knees to make him kneel.
"We're both officers-", Jungkook began to protest.
"I'm your hyung and that's an order!", Taehyung raised his tone. Jungkook froze, his eyes misty, as he returned Taehyung's pleading gaze. The man held up Taehyung's gun which he brought to the latter's left temple.
"No-", Jungkook tried not to panic. Taehyung kept his eyes on Jungkook.
"Go", Taehyung's voice remained calm. Jungkook was in shock, stalling. "For the love of God, get lost!", this time his voice was filled with urgency. Jungkook struggled to get on his feet, stumbling away.
"Anything?", Jimin asked, when he and Namjoon were reunited with Yoongi and Hoseok.
"No", Hoseok sighed as Yoongi shook his head.
"Taehyung and Jungkook?", Namjoon asked. The boys looked around, before he reached to his com. "Officer Kim, Officer Jeon, do you copy?". Silence .
"Dispatch, can you please locate Officer Jeon's and Officer Kim's coms?", Yoongi reached to his com.
"Tracking now", the dispatcher's voice came in. A few seconds passed. "Their last ping shows them at Indigo Plaza before the signal was gone. It's like they've gone off grid". Namjoon sighed heavily.
"Thank you, dispatch", Jimin responded. All four boys turned towards the sound of someone's heavy steps, their eyes widening in shock just as Jungkook came into their view. The youngest's eyes rolled back and he collapsed in front of them.
"Thanks for letting me crash at your place, Soojin", Jin took off his shoes before entering Soojin's apartment.
"Hey, no worries", Soojin did the same before putting on her slippers and rushing to bring a pair for her guest.
"It's just... I always nag at the others when they get hurt, they'll call me a hypocrite if I show up like this ", Jin explained.
"And they would be right", Soojin sassed, but she wasn't smiling as her eyes went to the cut on his forehead and his ripped sleeves with fingernail scratches underneath. She stepped away to get the first-aid kit, setting it down and opening it next to Jin. She didn't need to tell Jin to take off his button-down, keeping his white t-shirt on. They were silent as she began disinfecting the cuts, Jin trying not to wince or pull away, on his forearms, before she looked up to his forehead.
"Hey, lighten up", Jin urged, seeing the serious look on her face, as she reached and put his hair up with one hand and keep it in place. In response, Jin reached over her hand, her pulling away, and Jin pinning his hair back himself.
"It's kinda hard, considering you're like this because of me", Soojin replied. "I asked for your help, the patient had a reaction to the meds and...", she sighed, her voice trailing off, preoccupying herself with the cut on his forehead.
"I'm okay", Jin reassured. "Things happen... Besides, of course I'd help you". He noticed a slight nod from her.
"All patched up", Soojin fake-cheered, pulling her hand away, closing the first-aid kit and picking it up to put it away, before she returned.
"Hey", Jin nudged her with his shoulder, after she sat down next to him.
"Just give me a sec", Soojin sighed. "Wait, it just hit me. I mean, you staying over is no problem, of course. But the boys are gonna see you tomorrow. You know cuts don't heal overnight, right?"
"Shoot", Jin shut his eyes as he thought about it. "Well, I'm gonna be wearing long sleeves so they won't see my arms", his eyes went to his bag -he always had a change of clothes with him. "I don't know about the cut on my forehead though", he played with his hair. "Can you see it?"
"Hold on", Soojin reached and adjusted his bangs, before leaning a little back and then on both sides to check from different angles. "No, you're good"
"Great", Jin smiled.
"Alright, I've already placed a robe and towels for you in the bathroom. Why don't you go and freshen up, while I set up the couch?", Soojin asked.
"Sounds good", Jin got up, went to his bag to grab his toiletries, a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt, and headed to the bathroom. Soojin made her way to a little storage room, coming out with a pillow, a pillow case, a matching sheet and a duvet, hugging them as she went to the couch. She took off the pillows and prepped the pull-out couch, before laying the sheet and placing the pillow on one end and the duvet on the opposite end. As if on cue, Jin returned, having changed in his 'PJs' and drying his hair with one towel, his toiletry bag secured under one armpit.
"Good night", Soojin greeted him.
"Good night", Jin greeted back, and then she exited the living room.
"Jungkook!", all four of Jungkook's present hyungs exclaimed, rushing to the youngest. Jimin pulled him to his lap, Jungkook rolling onto his back. Through the dull lighting provided by the lampposts, they saw Jungkook had been through it . Out of all six of them, he was the most skilled fighter, and for him to be out like this...
"Jungkook?", Hoseok gently pat him on the cheek, his hand getting dyed red. Jungkook remained unconscious.
"Dispatch, this is Detective Kim Namjoon. Please roll an ambulance to Indigo Plaza. Officer down, with superficial wounds and possible-", he lifted Jungkook's shirt up, noticing the youngest's bruised midsection and torso, "certain internal bleeding", he rephrased, lowering the shirt back down.
"Copy that, Detective. Ambulance is 1 minute away", came the dispatcher's voice.
"Where's Taehyung?", Yoongi asked, looking at the boys. Namjoon's breath got caught in his throat and his heart dropped to his stomach.
"Helloooo!". Taehyung winced at the loud voice and the fingers snapping him awake. He forced his eyes open, noticing that his surroundings were different from last night. Last night?! When did he lose consciousness again? And where was he? The sunlight was coming from somewhere, and the place looked somewhat familiar for some reason... Taehyung blinked. "It'll wear off soon", the guy held up a syringe. "Sorry, I'm not a good host"
"What do you want?", Taehyung asked, although he was still half out-of-it.
"Playing with fire was boring", the guy said. "Wish I could admit that it was planned and take the credit, but it wouldn't be right. Although, 50 cops died", he smirked. Taehyung tried not to widen his eyes.
"Did you just admit to setting the 17th district on fire? It was you?", Taehyung questioned, more awake now.
"I said I can't take the credit, it was an accident", the other rebutted. Taehyung glared at him.
"Jungkook", Taehyung mumbled, looking around. It seemed like it was just the two of them in the building.
"I let him go just as you asked", the guy said.
"How can I trust you?", Taehyung stared boldly.
"You gave me your word, when you asked to take his place, that you wouldn't attempt anything. You proved it as you switched with him... Not sure how far he got, though", the other shrugged. Taehyung squeezed his eyes shut. Please be okay, Jungkook , he thought. I really hope he made it to the others... The others-
"Still with me?", the man snapped his fingers again. "I didn't drug you this time". Taehyung opened his eyes.
"Where are we?", Taehyung looked around again. The man raised an eyebrow as in saying 'You really think I'll tell you?'. "It's not, like, I'll call for help or tell someone..."
"Well, you got a point", the guy rubbed his chin with his index finger. "Why don't we go down the memory lane?", he pasted a fake smile on his face, as if he was reminiscing. "Word is it was the first time you got taken"
"Wang", Taehyung murmured with wide eyes, the hair at the back of his neck standing up and his blood running cold. "How-"
"He got me so intrigued", the guy sighed. "Why did he go to such length, escaping prison and abducting you again... I can see why he was interested, you have pulled me right in". Taehyung realized now why this place seemed familiar. This is where Wang took him, the case that started everything, almost dying, finding his family... "Uh", he brought a hand to his mouth, faking surprise. "I've already said too much. Time for you to take a nap. It's not gonna be comfortable, so I need you asleep for the time being"
"You could have sneaked up and ambushed all of us... Attacking me and Jungkook, letting him go and agreeing to take me in his place...", Taehyung shook his head, his voice trailing off. He winced, as the guy slammed the needle in his arm.
"Aren't you smart?", the man faked a praise. "You're right. I deliberately attacked only you and him. Although not everything went according to plan, but it all worked out in my favor in the end", he smirked. Taehyung felt the drug working, his brain barely managing to register his next words before he lost consciousness. "You were my target all along "
"Where-", Jin's voice was heard, as he pulled the door and the curtain open and found the treatment room Jungkook was in. The others were with him, their eyes going to the oldest.
"Hyung, I'm fine-", Jungkook was interrupted.
"Fine ?!", Jin almost spat. "What part of all of this", he gestured at Jungkook hooked up on monitors, a morphine drip connected to him, his external injuries patched up, "do you think looks fine to me?". He paused, regaining his composure. "How are you feeling?", he said in a softer voice.
"Still on morphine, so I'm pain-free", Jungkook gestured with his left hand (the one not connected with the oxymeter, the IVs nor the monitors), towards the IV drips. "Taehyungie hyung...", his voice trailed off.
"What the hell happened?", Jin asked, his eyes going to the others.
"We split up, in pursuit of an offender... Taehyung and Jungkook were attacked", Jimin explained.
"Jungkook stumbled his way and passed out in front of us. And from what he told us, after he woke up in here a couple hours ago, is that Taehyung made a deal with the offender: Let Jungkook go and he'll take his place ", Yoongi recited.
"And for some twisted reason, the guy agreed", Jungkook spat. "Taehyungie hyung ordered me to leave, using his hyung priviledge ... I shouldn't have listened!", he almost choked.
"Hey", Jin's eyes went to the heart monitor, the youngest's BPM spiking briefly.
"Jungkook, we're gonna find him", Namjoon spoke -the first time he opened his mouth since Jin entered the room.
"Hyung", Jungkook called. Namjoon reached and stroked his head.
"You've been here for hours... Why didn't you call me? Why did I have to find out just as I clocked in for my shift?", Jin eyed the youngers again.
"We got a feeling Jungkook wouldn't want us to", Hoseok said.
"That's true", Jungkook confirmed. "You were tired from your shift and you left on time for once, hyung", he looked at the oldest. "Even if I was awake, I wouldn't have contacted you. I would have waited till the morning, you need the rest"
"I'm sorry I'm making you worry, but I should be worried about you right now, not the other way around", Jin displayed a kind smile.
"We have to get back to the station", Yoongi piped up. "We gotta catch that son of a b-", he paused, reconsidering his words with Jin present. He cleared his throat. "We gotta catch him and save Tae", he rephrased.
"Feel free to swear", Jin shook his head. "I have all types of things to call the guy that has taken my brother, but I'm about to interact with patients so... I'm keeping them to myself"
"We'll keep you posted, hyung", Namjoon looked at Jin.
"Please do", Jin nodded in appreciation. Jungkook pushed the covers past his hips and tried to sit up.
"Where do you think you're going?", Soojin's voice came in before she entered. The boys exchanged bows with her.
"Don't have time for this", Jungkook mumbled, successfully sitting up. Jimin tried to hold him down, but Jungkook was stronger.
"Jungkook, no", Namjoon said. "You're injured. You have to stay here"
"Hyung, no, please!", Jungkook begged, his eyes getting teary. "Taehyungie hyung-"
"We'll handle it", Hoseok gestured at the others and himself.
"Please!", Jungkook whined. "I promise, I'll stay at my desk, help remotely! Please!". Jin and Soojin exchanged glances.
"What are we gonna do with you...", Jin exhaled. He extended a hand towards Soojin, and she handed him a document -They already knew so they came prepared. "Can you vouch that he'll keep his word about desk duty and not run off to play cops and robbers, risking his already-compromised condition?", he sneaked a peek at the others over the paper sheet, pen in hand.
"We'll strap him to his chair", Yoongi reassured, half-joking.
"What if I need to use the bathroom-", Jungkook was interrupted.
"We'll put you on a catheter. Or figure it out", Jimin mumbled. Jin raised an eyebrow. "That's your concern?"
"No, I'm sorry. Whatever , just not me sitting here doing nothing", Jungkook lowered his head. "I promise, I won't leave the station, not even our floor", he reassured. Jin approached, placing the document on Jungkook's lap and putting the pen in his right hand. Jungkook signed the 'Leaving against medical advice' paper, the others helped him change, before assisting him out, Soojin slipping a painkiller prescription through Hoseok, before they were out.
"Taehyung is gonna be okay. They're gonna find him", Soojin held onto Jin's biceps.
"Yeah, I know", Jin lowered his head, trying to collect himself, before putting on the Doctor Kim Seokjin facade. Soojin patted him before they left the room.
"How are we gonna find him?", Namjoon wondered, as soon as they had stepped foot in their office. Sergeant Chae reassured that they're all in on it, and Taehyung will be back in no time, the boys thanking her before they climbed up the stairs. "His com is not working, not to mention that he has both Taehyung's and Jungkook's guns...", he almost choked.
"Hey", Yoongi approached and placed a hand on the younger's shoulder.
"I'm sorry, I can't help it", Namjoon rushed. "Who knows what he has done to him, where he 's keeping him. What if Taehyung-", he couldn't bring himself to finish that thought.
"Hyung, no", Jimin looked at the taller boy with big eyes. "You have to believe Taehyung is alive"
"What does your gut tell you, hyung?", Jungkook asked, as Hoseok and Jimin were helping him towards his chair.
"That he's alive", Namjoon mumbled, but the certainty in his tone was evident, albeit with a hint of fear.
"He is alive ", Yoongi emphasized. "And we're gonna find him". Namjoon nodded, inhaling deeply to compose himself.
"So, coms and phone are out of the question", Namjoon's eyes went to Jungkook, the latter nodding slightly.
"That's the Namjoon we all know and love", Hoseok smiled, going to bring the white board closer, shooting a glare at Jungkook who tried to stand up and winced.
"Force of habit", Jungkook let out an empty chuckle.
"Let's get to work", Yoongi clapped once.
Taehyung gasped as he was water-slapped in the face, water going up his nose. At the same time, he squeezed his eyes shut at the stinging sensation the water made when it came in contact with the somewhat dried-up blood on his face. When he could open his eyes again, he glanced upwards, taking in his situation: His hands tied above his head with a rope hanging from the ceiling, his feet barely touching the ground, ropes around his ankles keeping his legs more than shoulder-width apart. He was completely immobilized.
"Are you comfortable?", the guy snorted, earning an unamused glare from Taehyung. The guy smiled as he put the now empty bucket down on the side and approached, his smirk disappearing before he grabbed Taehyung by the hair. Taehyung tried not to look away. "You haven't seen anything yet", he roughly let go off Taehyung's hair, reaching in his pocket and getting out a box cutter, pushing up the small lever to expose the tip of the sharp metal inside. He went behind Taehyung, the younger not able to turn his head completely, but he felt a sharp pain at his forearms when the guy flicked the cutter horizontally. Red liquid trickled down to his shoulder before it continued down, Taehyung wincing. The guy flicked the cutter again, this time from Taehyung's left shoulder to his right lower back, before he repeated from his right shoulder to his left lower back. Taehyung's shirt was ripped, pieces hanging, while the blood steeped through.
"We've all put criminals behind bars", Jungkook admitted, as they were trying to think of someone who would do this.
"Someone with a grudge against Taehyung specifically?", Yoongi sighed. "Hana's uncle", he added after a few seconds.
"Or...", Namjoon was heard, looking at each brother. "Wang". Sign of recognition in their eyes, as the memories of how they met Taehyung resurfaced, how they found the boy after both encounters with said criminal.
"He's still locked up", Sergeant Chae's voice came in. The boys turned around, seeing her enter. "I checked with the prison as soon as I knew about Taehyung missing"
"Thank goodness", Hoseok sighed in relief. After Wang escaping and abducting Taehyung for a second time, they made sure it never happened again. "He's alone, but we know what he's capable of". A guy like Wang definitely has connections on the outside, while he's locked up, someone that could get things done for him if he wanted to.
"He is now , not the first time he was locked up", Yoongi thought out loud.
"Right... He could have talked with other inmates...", Namjoon's voice trailed off.
"I'm on it", Sergeant Chae rushed away.
The guy threw the cutter over his shoulder, coming in front of Taehyung this time. Taehyung hissed in pain.
"I'm sorry I can't give you something for the pain", the man fake-pouted. He clenched his fists before he turned Taehyung's midsection into his punching bag, and the boy being unable to muffle his groans. Fresh blood dribbled down Taehyung's chin and onto his clothes. The guy stopped only when some ended up on his hands. "That's enough of that . Give me a minute", he took a step back and looked at Taehyung from head to toe, as if admiring a piece of art, with a satisfied look on his face. "Not all there yet", he rubbed his chin, before scanning the room for something he could use. He spotted a knife he had left in the corner, a smile blooming on his face. He went to grab it, looking at Taehyung as he made his way back.
"I haven't done anything to you", Taehyung struggled to keep his voice stable. "Why are you doing this? Did Wang put you up to it?"
"NOBODY made me do ANYTHING", the guy barked, any hint of a smile (or sanity, if he had one) gone. "This is all ME", he buried the knife in Taehyung's left thigh, the boy screaming.
"Yes, Sergeant Chae", Hoseok picked up his desk phone. "Thank you", he put the phone down.
"What?", Yoongi asked.
"She found the list of inmates Wang had roomed with back at his first holding facility", Hoseok replied, staring at the fax machine. "There were three others with Wang. One was attacked and killed by other inmates in the community room, another was transferred to the medical ward because of a collapsed lung which led to a stage 4 cancer diagnosis, and the third guy...", his voice trailed off, as the fax machine was getting noisy. A 3-page file emerged, Hoseok reaching out his hand to grab the sheets. "Is out", he placed the sheets in front of him, all boys looking at the name and the face.
"Out ", Namjoon repeated.
"He broke out almost a month ago and they haven't been able to track him ever since", Hoseok said. "It's like he 's a ghost". A knock on the door was heard, all boys turning towards the sound.
"Chief Kong", Yoongi called, the boys exchanging bows with the older man, as the latter entered.
"I've been meaning to visit after hearing that two of the officers were attacked and one is also missing", Chief Kong's eyes went to Jungkook who had remained seated. "I feel guilty, especially since it's my case and my suspect that led to this... How are you feeling, Jungkook?"
"I'm fine, sir", Jungkook reassured. "And it's not your fault, so please don't blame yourself!"
"Jungkook is right, sir. Danger, and situations like this as much as we hate it, is part of the job", Jimin added.
"How are you holding up? Anything on Taehyung?", Chief Kong asked, his eyes leaving Namjoon for last.
"Nothing yet, sir", Namjoon shook his head. "But we're working on it"
"Anything on your suspect, sir?", Hoseok wondered. Chief Kong's eyes went to Hoseok, before they landed on the piece of paper in front of him.
"Is there something wrong, Chief?", Yoongi asked, frowning.
"That's the guy we're after", Chief Kong pointed at the piece of paper in front of Hoseok. With quick steps, he approached to take a closer look. "I'm 100% certain, it's him . Why...", his voice trailed off.
"Are you familiar with the Wang Shihyun case- cases , sir?", Jungkook asked.
"I am", Chief Kong nodded. "Both cases involved Taehyung as the victim. Did Wang manage to escape again?", his eyes were wide.
"No, sir", Hoseok shook his head and Chief Kong sighed in relief. "We've already checked. He's still locked up"
"This guy, your guy , turns out was one of Wang's roommates back at his previous jail placement. From the other two roommates, one was killed and the other is in the medical ward with stage 4 cancer. Wang could have talked...", Jimin mumbled.
"I see", Chief Kong nodded in understanding. A desk phone rang again.
"Officer Jeon", Jungkook picked up the phone. His eyes grew wide as he listened to Sergeant Chae on the other end of the line. Silence had fallen in the room, everyone's eyes on the youngest. "Thank you, Sergeant"
"Jungkook", it was Chief Kong who urged on the younger.
"Someone called and reported a screaming. A male screaming", Jungkook relayed. His hyungs' hearts skipped a beat.
"Where?", Yoongi asked.
"Building J-7", Jungkook eyed the others.
"Isn't that-", Jimin was cut off, the boys' eyes going to Namjoon.
"Where we found Taehyung, almost a year ago. Wang had shot him twice and left him for...", Namjoon spoke, his eyes not focused. He inhaled shakily through the nose and exhaled through the mouth.
"Vest up", Yoongi eyed the youngers, except Jungkook.
"Do you mind if I join you?", Chief Kong asked.
"Not at all, sir", Yoongi shook his head, the boys bowing in appreciation.
"I'll let Jin hyung know", Jungkook nodded from his seat, as the others ran off.
When the four boys and Chief Kong arrived at the J-7 building, they couldn't hear anything. They couldn't hear Taehyung . After a quick glance around, seeing no one or nothing moving (the woman who had reported the incident was advised to stay inside in case shots were fired), their vests properly worn and guns in hand, they proceeded to silently and stealthily enter the structure. Jimin, who was at the head of the line, raised his left fist in the air, signaling the others to stop moving. They could hear someone speaking but it was too muffled to make out what he was saying. But , they could tell where it was coming from, so they moved that way.
"-Still there, Taehyung ?". That was loud enough, Namjoon freezing, and Yoongi almost bumping into him. Namjoon took a deep breath, before he moved again. All of them stuck their backs against the wall, on either side of the door frame. "I thought you would be tougher, as a cop", he spat. A faint whimper from Taehyung the others almost missed. Namjoon clenched his gun tighter.
"Wooden door?", Chief Kong whispered, receiving a nod from Jimin who briefly placed a palm on the surface. "On the count of three, I'll kick it open", he said, before coming in front of Jimin. "Namjoon, you're gonna go to Taehyung. Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir", Namjoon complied.
"Okay, get ready", Chief Kong urged. "One, two, three". He kicked the door open, Hoseok and Jimin sprinting towards the offender and tackling him, putting cuffs on him, while Yoongi and Namjoon rushed to Taehyung. Taehyung who was laying on the floor, lifeless , his shirt a blood-stained and ripped mess, a knife stuck on his thigh.
"Taehyung", Namjoon almost choked. The younger's eyes were closed.
"Suspect is apprehended and secured. Paramedics!", Yoongi used his com.
"How?", the guy barked, struggling against Hoseok and Jimin's weights on him, immobilizing him against the floor. "I searched him! Where was the wire or whatever? Did you hear everything? About the fire that killed 50 of you bastards?"
"What- It was you?", Chief Kong turned to him. The guy's face dropped, going from anger to the expression someone pulls when he knows he messed up. "Detectives Jung and Park, I'll take him. You take care of your brother, okay?"
"Copy that, sir!", Hoseok and Jimin said in unison. After pulling the man to his feet and Chief Kong getting a good grip on the cuffs and the guy's nape, he started pulling him as the paramedics entered. Hoseok and Jimin ran with the paramedics to Yoongi, Namjoon and unconscious Taehyung.
"Oh lord", Jimin exclaimed in a low voice, taking in Taehyung's condition.
"We're not gonna pull the knife out", one of the paramedics eyed the officers.
"They'll do it at the hospital", Hoseok voiced, receiving a nod from the EMTs.
"Can you hear me?", the other paramedic lightly tapped on Taehyung, before her hands went to his eyes to check pupil response. "Pupils reactive". Taehyung squeezed his eyes shut before forcing them half-open, and groaning in pain.
"Shhhh it's okay, Tae", Namjoon gently stroked the younger's hair. "We got you". The EMTs were very careful as they wrapped a bandage around the knife and Taehyung's leg, securing it in place so it wouldn't move when they rolled Taehyung on the backboard, or due to the vibrations while the ambulance was on the way to the hospital.
"He's having some difficulty breathing, so we'll bag him", the male paramedic placed an oxygen mask over Taehyung's nose and mouth, as the backboard was lifted off the ground and rushed to the back of the ambulance. After loading him in, the female paramedic and Namjoon climbed in, while the male EMT got in the driver's seat, switched the sirens on and stepped on the gas. The others ran to the cars and followed suit.
"I'm here, you're gonna be okay", Namjoon said softly, holding onto Taehyung's left hand, while the younger whimpered in pain and tears rolled down his temples, before he lost consciousness right as they reached the emergency department doors.
"Oh my goodness", Jungkook exclaimed as he listened to Hoseok on the other end of the line. "I want to come there so bad. I'll see if I can find a taxi-"
"No need for that", Jin's voice came, the oldest entering the office. Jin ended up coming to give him a lift to the hospital because, knowing how things go whenever Taehyung is missing, he'll definitely need it, as much as everyone wished he didn't.
"Jin hyung?", Jungkook called. "See you soon", he replied to Hoseok, before the older ended the call. Jungkook dropped his phone in his pocket.
"I came to pick you up", Jin said, assisting Jungkook in standing up and supporting him towards the elevator. "Jimin already called me, the ambulance", his voice shook slightly at the last word, "is on its way to the hospital"
"Thank you, hyung", Jungkook lowered his head.
"Heeeeey", Jin dismissed him. He was supporting most of the younger's weight. "How are you doing today?"
"I'm better", Jungkook smiled. They greeted Sergeant Chae as they passed by, before Jin helped him to his car and they rushed back to the hospital, getting there before the ambulance.
"I hope you don't think you'll go in there", Soojin voiced when she met Jin, who was supporting Jungkook, at the waiting room.
"I know", Jin murmured, helping Jungkook sit on a chair. "Will you let me just see him at least?"
"Did Jimin tell you Taehyung's situation?", Soojin asked.
"Not much, they were in a rush. He did say that... It's pretty bad ", Jin said, nervously glancing at his watch.
"Seokjin, I don't think you should see him", Soojin's tone was cautious.
"I need to see him, Soojin", Jin begged. "Please"
"Okay", Soojin gave in with a sigh. "But, just a glance. Let me save him and then you can look at him all you want"
"Thank you", Jin forced a smile. "I know he's in the best possible hands". The doors opened, his smile fading at the sound. He turned around just as Soojin grabbed a pair of gloves and put them on. Jin followed behind her, but stayed at the back after letting her team pass, as they rushed to the elevator. He managed to get a glimpse of Taehyung before the doors closed and he was taken to the operating room, any color draining from Jin's face.
"Hyung?", Jungkook called, having stood up but leaning against the wall for stability. "How is he?", he asked when Jin made his way back.
"Bad ", Jin exhaled shakily. "He was unconscious. Face blooded up, clothes ripped, bruises and bloodstains everywhere... A knife lodged in his left thigh...". Jungkook's eyes widened, a breath getting caught in his throat. Jin helped him sit back down, just as the others ran in.
"Tae?", Hoseok asked.
"Rushed to the OR", Jin said. "Soojin is treating him". Again . Namjoon was absent-mindedly wiping his blooded-up palms with a wet tissue.
"What about... him ?", Jungkook asked his other hyungs. "Is he dead or in custody?"
"In custody", Jimin replied. "Deputy District Chief Kong took it upon himself to get him to a holding cell and interrogate him, ushering us to come here and be with Tae". Jungkook nodded in understanding. And then they went silent, switching from sittting to pacing (except for Jungkook), waiting for updates from Soojin.
"Tae?", Jin called softly, noticing the younger squeezing his eyes tightly. Taehyung slowly opened his eyes, blinded by the bright room at first. After squinting and blinking, he managed to open them and register his brothers and Soojin around him. All of his brothers. He must have subconsciously stretched his lower body, because a sharp pain shot through his left thigh, radiating to his upper body. He winched, tears rushing down his temples, while blindly searching for something to hold on to. He found someone's hands, which without even guessing, belonged to Hoseok and Jimin.
"Do you want me to up your morphine?", Soojin immediately went to the IVs, her hand reaching the one administering pain-relief in Taehyung's system and increasing the dosage slightly. Taehyung sniffled, but his face relaxed and he managed to open his eyes again. Namjoon reached to wipe the younger's tears, as Taehyung released his grip on Jimin's and Hoseok's hands.
"Thank you, noona", Taehyung smiled at Soojin, with her returning the smile and shaking her head. A million questions were rushing through his mind and he didn't know where to start. That's when his eyes focused on Jungkook. "Jungkook, oh thank goodness", he sighed in relief. Pain that the morphine couldn't fully mask jabbed at his ribs, but he ignored it. "How are you doing?"
"How am I doing, hyung?", Jungkook repeated in disbelief. "I-I'm fine...". Taehyung's gaze scanned him from head to toe."It's you who...", his voice trailed off.
"I'm...", Taehyung thought about it. "I'm healing "
"Let's roll the story back to fill in any gaps", Yoongi suggested. Taehyung nodded. "When we split up, you and Jungkook got ambushed"
"When I regained consciousness, Jungkook was beat up, on his knees, and he was behind him", Taehyung said.
"Then you made a deal with him . He lets Jungkook go and you take his place", Hoseok continued. Taehyung nodded.
"I'm sorry, hyung! I should have-", Jungkook began.
"I'm glad you listened", Taehyung said, his hand briefly going to Jungkook's. "I can't imagine what could have happened to you if... He said I was his target all along, before he drugged me unconscious". He saw they wanted to ask what he was drugged with, but it would have showed up on the tests if it was still in his system, so they didn't. Besides, it's not like he knew what he was getting drugged with.
"Jungkook stumbled back and fainted in front of us" Namjoon said.
"It was such a shock seeing him like that and not finding you", Jimin added.
"We took him to the hospital right away", Yoongi piped up. "Turns out he had some serious internal bleeding, and it would take a while for him to be pain-free, but he was mostly clear. He wouldn't sit his butt in the hospital, and we almost had to tie him to his chair, but he did stay at the office"
"Thank goodness for that", Taehyung mumbled, knowing that his only dongsaeng had a hard time sitting still or be on desk duty.
"Yeah. He's gonna be on desk duty until I clear him. Same goes for you", Yoongi glared. Taehyung accepted his fate.
"We proceeded to try and find you, starting from 0, since we didn't have any leads", Hoseok spoke. "Trying to think of criminals who had a grudge against you..."
"Hana's uncle came to mind", Namjoon cut in. "But also..."
"Wang", Taehyung voiced.
"Thinking that he was roomed with other inmates the first time around, we looked for his roommates. If Wang had talked...", Jungkook's voice trailed off, shrugging.
"He did, apparently", Taehyung said bitterly.
"Wang had three roommates. One is dead and the other is with terminal cancer in the prison's medical ward. So, that leaves one... And he had broken out of prison almost a month earlier", Jimin said.
"He did it. The fire at the 17th district", Taehyung's eyes widened slightly. "He accidentally admitted it to me"
"We know he was the one behind it", Yoongi spoke. "He unintentionally gave himself away when we captured him , shocked that we managed to find you. Chief Kong had dropped by the office and saw his file, saying that's his guy"
"And that's when Sergeant Chae called us to inform us that someone reported a male- you - screaming", Jimin spoke. "It was the same lady who had called us about the car outside of the abandoned building where Wang had took you the first time. Where he took you, too"
"Deputy District Chief Kong asked to join in", Jungkook inquired. "I called Jin hyung to inform him", he eyed the oldest, "and he also came to pick me up so I can be here"
"So nice of Chief Kong. I need to thank him as soon as possible", Taehyung made a mental note.
"We rushed to you, while Chief Kong, Hoseok and Jimin cuffed him . Chief took him away", Namjoon said. "You were unconscious at first. The paramedics ran in, set you up on the backboard, and we carried you to the ambulance". The rest Taehyung knew. "Tae", he called. He continued when Taehyung returned his gaze. "Were you awake the whole time...?"
"He had me drugged for some time periods. But...", Taehyung exhaled, planting his gaze at his lap, "When he threw a whole bucket of water on me", one hand briefly rose to his now-dried hair, "when he used a box cutter aganst my back", his hand went to his shoulder as he winced, "when he punched me", now his hand went to his stomach, "or when he stabbed me on the thigh...", he lowered his hand back down to his side. "I was awake through it all-", his voice broke, shutting his eyes but couldn't prevent the tears from flowing out.
"Oh, Tae", Jin stepped forward and gently hugged him. He didn't put any weight or moved Taehyung at all, the boy was already in enough pain. "Shhhhh, you're okay", he leaned and kissed him on the crown. Taehyung's non-IVed hand rising and weakly holding onto Jin's scrubs. They gave Taehyung a couple of minutes to calm down.
"What's the damage?", Taehyung sniffled, his eyes going to Soojin. Only then, Jin moved back to give him some space again.
"The cuts will take a week or two to heal. New bandages should be applied twice daily, I'll give you a cream that will speed up the process and fight off any possible infection", Soojin began. "You have 17 broken ribs, which will take about three weeks to heal-"
"1-17", Taehyung repeated, his eyes wide.
"17", Soojin confirmed. "That's seven more than Jungkook". Taehyung's eyes went to the youngest, before returning to Soojin. "As for the knife... Thankfully, it missed any arteries or bones, and from what we can tell there's no nerve damage. However ", she emphasized, noticing the younger perk up, "there was significant injury to your muscle. You're gonna be in pain, you'll have to move with help only , frequently clean and switch the gauze. You might also need physical therapy"
"How long will he be on desk duty?", Jin asked, with a tone that meant 'You better be listening', accompanied by a warning glare towards his youngest brother.
"2 months", Soojin replied. "One month for the wound to heal, and one more just to make sure you're slowly getting stronger before you can be back to active duty, taking into account the physical therapy time if you need it". Taehyung could only nod.
"Also, both yours and Jungkook's guns are secured back at the station. We retrieved them", Hoseok informed. The youngest Kim visibly relaxed.
"How long was I unconscious?", a thought seemed to flash through Taehyung's mind.
"We found you yesterday", Hoseok replied. Taehyung counted with his fingers. "Why?"
"I didn't miss it, did I?", Taehyung glanced at the others, his eyes stopping on Yoongi.
"Miss what-", Yoongi mumbled, until it clicked. "Hey! You almost...", he sighed. "We almost lost you . Again . And that's what you're worried about?". Taehyung gave an apologetic smile. "No. No, you didn't", he gave in. Taehyung's face brightened up.
"I probably will, though", Taehyung's face dropped. "I don't think I'll be out in two days", a few tears made their escape again. "Except if...", he raised his gaze at Soojin.
"NO", Jin exclaimed. "No", he lowered his voice. "I can't believe you... Birds of a feather do flock together", his eyes went from Taehyung to Jungkook and back to Taehyung.
"Seokjin, that's not your decision to make", Soojin spoke up.
"I'm sorry, Soojin. I didn't mean to undermine you", Jin regained his composure. "Of course. You're the primary physician, it's your decision"
"Do you promise that you won't attempt to move on your own and you'll let the others know any requests you have?", Soojin turned to Taehyung.
"Yes, noona", Taehyung nodded.
"Do you promise you'll have someone clean your wounds and switch your bandages, just like I advised?", Soojin asked.
"Yes, noona", Taehyung repeated.
"Do you promise to stay on desk duty for two months until both me and Yoongi clear you to get back full throttle?", Soojin asked this time.
"Yes, noona", Taehyung repeated for the second time.
"You'll have to be on a wheelchair for two weeks, before I allow you to put even the slightest weight on that leg", Soojin briefly nodded at Taehyung's left leg. "Will you comply?"
"I'll do anything, noona. Whatever orders you give, I promise I'll follow them well", Taehyung lowkey begged. "Please". Okay, more like high-key now .
"They really do flock together", Soojin glanced at Jin before she extended a hand towards him. Jin sighed and reluctantly handed her the document. "Don't get it twisted, I'm keeping you admitted today. You're getting discharged tomorrow evening ", she emphasized. "What's the occassion, by the way?", she looked at Yoongi.
"Promotion", Yoongi replied.
"Oh, congratulations!", Soojin smiled. Yoongi lowered his head in appreciation. "Alright, that's enough for one day. You", she eyed Taehyung, "and you", then Jungkook, "and actually all of you need rest"
"You heard her", Jin said, going to help Jungkook up. "Come on, out"
"You, too", Soojin glared at him.
"Soojin", Jin called.
"Not having it", she shooed him with her hands. They were all out of the room, but the door was still open. "Rest well, Taehyung. See you tomorrow". Taehyung smiled, his eyes slowly closing. He was asleep in the next few seconds. Soojin pulled the door to close.
"Soojin", Jin tried to protest.
"Off you go", Soojin insisted. Jin didn't budge. "I'm leaving, too. The night shift is here, they'll take good care of Taehyung until tomorrow morning", she reassured. Jin deflated, giving in.
"I'll take Jungkook with me", Jimin went to take on Jungkook's weight. "I'll keep an eye on him"
"We would take him", Jin eyed Namjoon.
"No, hyung", Yoongi shook his head. "I could take him, too"
"Not with your parents visiting, hyung", Jimin reminded.
"Exactly. I don't mind taking Jungkook, either", Hoseok piped up.
"You're one to talk. Your pregnant sister is visiting because she hasn't seen you since Chuseok", Yoongi sassed.
"For all those reasons, I'll take Jungkook, since I have the space", Jimin pointed out.
"Excuse me, but do you mind not talking about me like I'm not around or as if I'm an object?", Jungkook protested.
"Shush", his present hyungs said unanimously.
"I can take care of myself, you don't have to...", Jungkook mumbled, his voice trailing off when he noticed their glares. Considering his situation... "Okay, I'll come with you, Jiminie hyung"
"You didn't really have much of a choice", Jimin sassed.
"Alright, now that that's settled... Good night, boys", Soojin smiled.
"Good night, noona", the youngers wished her.
"Good night, Soojin", came from Jin, before he, the boys and her went their separate ways.
"Aaaaaaaay, there's the man of the hour!", Jin exclaimed, after the ceremony was over and they could have Yoongi all to themselves. Yoongi could only smile. Him and the boys in their formal clothes, Taehyung too, although seated on the wheelchair, Jin in a casual outfit. Soojin had been invited, too, but unfortunately couldn't make it due to an emergency of one of her patients. Yoongi's parents also couldn't be there, which saddened him a bit, but he got to spend some time with them while they visited so he wasn't too disheartened.
"Thank you, all, for being here", Yoongi said, after a salute, a handshake and a hug with each of them.
"As if we would miss this, hyung", Taehyung smiled.
"You better-", Yoongi pointed at him, not finishing what he was about to say. He cleared his throat. "Okay, who's next?"
"Who's next for what, hyung?", Jimin asked. The boys were frowning in question.
"For a promotion", Yoongi snapped his fingers. "Are you gonna go for Sergeant?", he eyed Hoseok.
"Noooo", Hoseok immediately refused. "Detective is my calling"
"Taehyungie hyung? Are you gonna try for Detective?", Jungkook wondered. "It will get confusing, though... Imagine someone calls for Detective Kim and both you and Namjoonie hyung turn around. So maybe Namjoonie hyung should go for Sergeant as well"
"Me, a Detective?", Taehyung questioned. "I don't know"
"You'll be a good Detective", Namjoon lightly nudged him. "You're a great Officer"
"And you'd make a great Sergeant", Hoseok said, his eyes going from Namjoon to Yoongi.
"I can attest to that", Yoongi raised his hand.
"Uhhhhhh", Taehyung and Namjoon looked at each other, trying to process.
"How about we leave things as they are?", Taehyung suggested. "Who knows what the future holds?", he shrugged, the action making him wince.
"True. We have all the time in the world", Namjoon agreed. "Let's leave it up to destiny. Destiny brought us together, so we'll keep trusting her and letting her do her thing"
"Hear, hear", the others said in unison.
