Work Text:
“I’m glad you came.” Tristan tells Yugi, looking up at the night sky. “We’ll we’ve been out all night and you told me that this place has the best view of shooting stars. Even though we are in the middle of nowhere.” Tristan glances and feels the concerned look coming from his new best friend. Ever since Tristan can remember, he has been from place to place as he was a foster child. He and his father never got along and when they would get into violent altercations, Tristan would just get shuffled back into the system. But hotels were gettin more and more expensive and realized that he was better off getting his own place.
When he was told about an abandoned trailer fifty miles from Domino by a client of his, Tristan had to jump on it. “You know I fixed this place up! Fireplace in the other room, movie projector , updated kitchen and the part that you will love the most, updated locks.” Snuggling closer to him, Yugi pouts and wraps his arms tighter around Tristan’s body. “I don’t like when you are out here by yourself. Someone could break in and hurt you.” Tristan was well-meaning but he could be a bit reckless and at times, seem like his life didn’t matter too much to him and it was enough to worry him at times. “I told you, when I get a spot closer, I will get rid of this place and stay there. But tell the truth, you just want me closer to you.” Tristan teases, sinking further down to get a better glance at the stars. “Maybe....” “Just maybe!” Tristan laughs, rocking him back and forth.
Yugi can’t help but laugh with him because he showed a side to him that no one else got to see. Tristan was usually so stubborn and closed off that no one would give him the same chance that Joey received. But when it was just the two of them. No judging eyes and hateful whispers behind their backs, Tristan was free to be himself. A free-spirited, protector that would do anything to make sure that Yugi was comfortable.
When it was just the two of them, they would go wherever the wind would take them. Arcades, movies, hole in the wall restaurants, museums, hot springs.
Anything that was late night and random was good enough for them. “No but really, I want you safe and sound.” Yugi mentions seriously, looking up at Tristan. “I know. I really am looking into more places and as soon as I find something in budget I will move as soon as I can. But right now this is the safest option for me.” “Ok. But I don’t like it.” Smiling, Tristan kisses the top of his forehead. “I know, I know. This just means you have to come over more often to make sure I’m not lonely.” “As long as you keep cooking the way you do. I won’t go anywhere.” Laughing out loud, Tristan lies back and looks up at the ceiling. Grateful that he has the privilege to have this moment. “You know I love you right.” Tristan blurts out before he can catch himself. “Yes. And I love you too Tristan.” Tristan closes his eyes and feels Yugi’s lips gently touches his. They both know that no more words need to be shared as the shooting star races across the very top of the camper. Grinning ear to ear, they stare up at the beautiful sky above them with time being nothing but an illusion.
