Work Text:

His eyes scanned the festival from above. He was taking up a bit of space, and the only thing he could think of was to go up to the roof of the building. It was starting to get dark, which meant that the fireworks event was about to start. His hands were firmly gripping the metal railing that surrounded the area. Everyone's voices were so far away that he was able to relax. Although, he also couldn't help but feel bad for leaving Rin and the others out of nowhere.

He had invited Rin two afternoons ago, while they were walking towards his home together. It was a short conversation that was based on " Do you want to come to a festival with me ?", " Okay ", " Good ", " Good ". And now he had walked away from the group. Was he being a bad host?

"Wow, so here you were..." A voice caught his attention. He knew perfectly well who it was, so he wasn't at all surprised to find Rin standing a few meters away from him. The redhead had put his hands in the pockets of his coat.

"Rin…"

"I was beginning to wonder if it was possible that someone could get lost in their own school," he teased, the sight of him scanning the place until he finally stopped on it. "What are you doing here?"

"What are you doing here?" Haru raised an eyebrow, demanding an answer.

"Hey, I asked first", Rin imitated his action.

Haruka took a long breath.

"I needed some air," he murmured. "There are a lot of people walking from one side to the other."

"I understand..." Rin approached him. "Do you mind if I accompany you for a while?"

Haru shrugged, before returning his gaze to the front.

"Whatever you want."

It was then that Rin surprised Haruka by putting his arms around his waist. He placed his chin on the black-haired boy's shoulder, to which he managed to make out a pink hue appearing on his cheeks.

"A moment ago…" Haru spoke. "You did not answer my question."

Rin tightens the hug.

“I was with the boys and suddenly my boyfriend had disappeared. What did you expect me to do, huh?" Haru still didn't get used to the words 'boyfriend' , 'boyfriends' , although that didn't mean he disliked them. It always sounded… cute coming from Rin's mouth. There had already been a few months since Haru dared to take the first step.

"Rin..." his mouth tried to hide an amused smile.

"I'm serious! For a moment, I thought you had evaporated into thin air or something."

"You're very dramatic," he attacked, while he frowned.

Rin smiled, then deposited a sloppy kiss on the cheek of his boyfriend.

"That's how you like me," he said back, acting flirtatious.

Haru looked at him sideways, he didn't answer anything. He couldn't object to what Rin said, but he wouldn't say that out loud. Although, a large part of him was fully aware that Rin knew that he was indeed correct. But, Haru didn't just like Rin. He was sure that he loved him. He liked everything about him.

The defiant smile that he always showed him when challenging him to another race, the way he used to laugh, showing his sharp teeth; he loved it when they sneaked out in the middle of the night to swim in Samezuka's pool, Rin's husky voice when talking on the phone. It always had an effect on him. But most of all, he adored the caring side that Rin exhibited when they were alone. He wasn't the only one who showed this facet at times like these, Haru did too.

He didn't think he would have found a dream if Rin hadn't been there. Rin had made a big change in his life ever since he came to it, begging him to participate in a medley relay. Sometimes, he wondered if Rin knew that Haru was grateful and enchanted to meet him. But through it all, he knew that he was loved and that Rin knew that he was loved too.

"Wow..." the redhead's voice brought him out of his thoughts. "I have to admit that this festival has been a complete success."

"Everyone worked very hard."

"That was easy to notice," Rin agreed, nodding. "Momo and Ai were very amazed by your drawing skills. Who would say that there was an artist among us?"

He began to sway with Haru in his arms, with amusement. Haru opened his mouth to claim, but was interrupted by the sound of an explosion. Immediately, he returned his gaze to the sky, which was adorned with brilliant fireworks. Rin also turned his eyes towards that great spectacle.

"Wow..." His smile widened. "It's lovely."

"It's true", Haruka could see Rin out of the corner of his eye.

At a certain point, Haru's body began to feel cold. Rin had separated. Haru turned around and when he did, he noticed the redhead in front of him. Rin extended a hand in his direction, inviting him to take it. Haru made his most confused face.

"What are you doing?" he ventured to ask.

"Dance with me."

"What?"

"Dance with me", he repeated, still showing that smile on his face.

Seeing that Haru didn't move, Rin gently tugged on his arm to pull him towards him.

"Rin…"

"Yeah?" He settled into a waltz position.

"You've been watching too many romantic movies," he chided, playfully.

"Blame Gou. She forces me to watch them when I go home," Haru looked at him with a raised eyebrow. They both knew very well that this was not true.

" Sure… I don't even understand why you want to dance. There's not even music."

"Haru. Just dance with me," Rin put his hands on his shoulders. Haru had no choice but to put his on the boy's waist. He could only hear the fireworks in the background. That was until Rin started humming an English song into his ear.

They began to spin aimlessly. Rin guided Haru's body with ease, while he laughed as he did so. Deep inside, Haruka was enjoying it. The redhead noticed how the boy's expression softened, so he realized that Haru wasn't having a bad time. The night was sparkling and he didn't want to let go of the moment. Haru finally rested his head on Rin's shoulder, clinging to him, as if he was afraid he would disappear.

" I love you ," Haru whispered, almost inaudible.

"Did you say something?" Rin raised an eyebrow, even though Haru wasn't looking at him at the time.

"No."

A few minutes passed in which they continued with their dance attempt. They went from one place to another, taking advantage of the space they had available. The laps were already slow. Rin could feel Haruka's heart beating against his. For Rin, there was no more romantic setting than this. He was sure that this time he could say to Haru those three words that he had been waiting to say for so long. Wasn't it too soon? I mean, they had dated for three months. But, his connection with him was already years old. It was the perfect moment, wasn't it?

He had to let him know that what he felt for Haru was more than just 'liking' .

"Haru?" The aforementioned turned to see him and those blue eyes that drove him crazy met his. Rin swallowed hard. "Haru…"

The black-haired boy looked at him, waiting for whatever Rin was going to say.

"Haru."

"Rin."

"Haru..." The words didn't come out. Why did they make it look so easy in the movies? What if Haru thought he was too intense? What if…? What if…?

Those thoughts were interrupted as soon as Rin's phone began to ring. The redhead separated from Haruka to check the number that called him. Seeing the person's name, he couldn't help but let out a ‘ fuck! '.

"Shouldn't you answer?" Haru cocked his head.

Rin alternated looking between his phone and his boyfriend. He rolled his eyes in frustration before answering the call.

"Gou?"

" Onii-chan !" His sister's voice filled his ears.

"What happened?"

Gou explained that she should go home, since everyone had finished picking up the stands and it was getting late. Rin shifted his weight from one foot to the other, glancing at Haru, who was looking at him intrigued. Minutes in which Rin argued with his sister to give him five more minutes passed slowly. Or at least that's how Haru felt. Rin ended the call with a slightly irritated " Okay, I’m going. Wait for me " and returned the cell phone to his pants pocket.

He let out a long breath, as he arranged his hair back. A habit of his.

"I'm sorry, Haru... I must..."

"Leave, I know," he murmured with a small understanding smile.

"It's just that Gou…"

"Rin, I know. Don't worry,” his voice was calm.

“Okay… Shall I call you later?” He scratched the back of his neck uncomfortably.

"Sure."

“Okay…” Rin turned to leave, but Haru called out his name seconds later.

"Wait", Haru approached him and handed him a sheet of paper folded in four. "I almost forgot it."

"What is this?"

"See for yourself."

Rin unfolded the sheet of paper to find a portrait of him done entirely in pencil. His eyes lit up as he went over the drawing over and over again. It was perfectly done, with a lot of details in it. Tears were about to come out of his eyes when he turned to see Haru, who was standing there, watching him carefully.

"Idiot. I have nothing for you."

"Let's count that ridiculous dance as a gift, okay?"

“It wasn't ridiculous! You enjoyed it!” Rin claimed, with a frown. "I saw it!"

Haru rolled his eyes in amusement before tucking a strand of hair behind Rin's ear and kissing him on the cheek. Rin blushed quickly.

"Good night, Rin. I love you. "
