Summary
Every year, the Graham family spends summer in the south of France.
17 year old Will is the son of a famous pianist. He and his siblings are training to be pianists themselves, though Will wants to pursue forensics and criminology—something that his father disapproves of. After a physical altercation with his father, Will injures his hand and is left unable to play.
But he's still forced to spend the summer with his family. He hopes that this time, they will be able to come clean about everything, and finally talk about their feelings.
But the family's attention is elsewhere: a painter has been hired to paint a portrait of Will's father, and he's going to come stay with the Grahams in their summer home.
Will is content, at least, that he is going to be left to his own devices—that he doesn't have to practice playing for the time-being, and that he can focus on things that interest him more. He wants to keep to himself.
But then he meets the enigmatic painter.
