As soon as Childe woke up, he frowned, sensing that something wasn’t quite right. He patted both sides of the bed, only to find them empty, even though he remembered falling asleep next to Zhongli and Neuvillette. Reluctantly, he opened up an eye, despite the tiredness that still numbed his mind and begged him to rest some more. It appeared to be still dark outside, so why were his husbands not with him?
More and more alarmed, Childe rolled over, ready to go look for them. However, all his rising worries vanished before he could even sit up, as he was met with the most adorable sight: Two small dragons, one brown, one blue and white, were snuggled up together, buried under a pillow that served as their makeshift den.
Ah. That wasn’t so surprising, all things considered. Zhongli always said it cost him less energy to stay in that form, and the previous day, Neuvillette had come back home absolutely exhausted from his last trial. Childe didn’t mind the unexpected change, not when his heart was melting just from looking at the two entangled dragons. So long as his mates were alright and were getting the rest they needed, nothing else mattered.
However, he noticed that Neuvillette was slightly shaking, and he quickly understood why when he noticed that his scaly tail wasn’t covered by the pillow. That also explained why he was so closely warped up around Zhongli: The consultant’s body always ran slightly warmer than theirs, and it didn’t bother him to serve as their personal heater. On the contrary, there was always a glint of pride in his eyes whenever he could assist him or Neuvillette in any way.
A sentiment that Childe shared, and so, with a fond smile, he reached for the covers and pulled them up so his two mates would be soundly tucked underneath it. Neuvillette relaxed instantly. His trembling ceased and he released a content sigh in his sleep. As for Zhongli, he shifted a bit closer to them both, as if drawn to their presence
Once Childe had made sure the two of them would remain snug and comfortable, he wrapped his arms around his beloved dragons, his touch light enough not to wake them, and he closed his eyes, at peace now that he knew all three of them were safe.
His mates’ soft purring lulled him back to sleep in no time.
