Work Text:
“Ready?” Amity asked, smiling at Hunter as she stood across from him, her hair up in a tight ponytail and body all warmed up for their agreed upon rematch.
“As I’ll ever be,” he responded, letting out a breath and digging his heels in while Luz approached the center of the playing field.
“Okay, guys. I wanna see a clean fight. Go!” she announced, bolting back off to the sidelines with Willow and Gus as soon as she had commenced the fight.
Amity pushed off fast with abominations trailing her and Hunter took the opportunity to flash behind her. Amity knew Hunter’s favorite strategies by now, though. She was able to jump and turn when he tried to sweep her legs and reached back to grapple his shoulders for a brief moment before pushing him back with abominations, trying to get him in place to pin him down on his stomach so he couldn’t keep teleporting. He didn’t like to teleport to places that he couldn’t see clearly.
Unluckily for Amity, Hunter slipped right out from under her abominations and made his way over to the side to set up for trying to get behind her once more. He was fast, and Amity wasn’t fast enough to counter by guarding her back. He got her arms behind her back and eased her down to the ground carefully.
“Fair and square?” he asked, knelt down beside her and helping her back up as soon as she looked back up at him.
She let out a sigh and took his help to get back to her feet. “Fair and square,” she relented quietly. “Good job. I guess you’ve still got it.”
Hunter rubbed the back of his neck and looked away bashfully. “Flyer Derby keeps me in shape,” he admitted. “But it feels nice to be a little clumsier with real combat. I’m glad we got to retry that on even footing, though. You’re a really good friend of mine, I hope you know that.”
Amity smiled at him and wiped some of her own abomination goo off of her face from where she was held lightly on the ground. “You’re a really good friend of mine, too, Hunter,” she said, following through and wiping the goo on Hunter’s shoulder playfully.
“Hey,” he chuckled, laughing alongside her while Luz and Gus exchanged snails on the sidelines. “Darius is gonna kill me.”
She rolled her eyes. “Darius can get abomination stains out of anything. Besides, I know those are your work clothes. You’ve never cared about getting them dirty before,” she said.
He smiled and started to walk over to the rest of his friends. “Okay, we’ve got that out of our systems. What’s next on the agenda?” he asked.
“Lunch?” Willow suggested. “And then library, if everyone else is okay with that.”
Amity nodded and smiled wide. “Yeah, I like the sound of that!” she said.
Hunter agreed. “Lunch and library sounds great,” he said. “Let’s get going. I don’t have lessons until five, anyways.”
