[4] Game Plan

Summary:

After the events of the Nonary Game, Clover Field has had quite an eventful life, almost as eventful as that game, surprisingly.
And now, she was planning for potentially one of the most dangerous things in her entire life.

This is a short story for 999 Week, to bridge the gap between 999 and VLR for Clover. Enjoy.

[You don't have to have played VLR to enjoy this story, although in this specific case, I'll highly recommend having done so.]

Notes:

i got the busiest day yesterday so i couldnt upload this fic. gonna probably be uploading fic 5 for 999 week later today as well if things go as planned

Work Text:

Her brother went on ahead, leaving their home as he headed to their work, their day job. As far as Light knew, Clover would follow right after him, though she would take a bit of time to clean the house a bit, but that was a lie. She wouldn’t be going to work today, or at least not that work. She’d be going to her real work, as an SOIS agent.

A while after her brother had left, there was a knock at the door, followed by the familiar voice that made her soon after relax.

“Are you ready for this, Clover?”

“I was born ready.” Clover speaks with conviction, a trait that always seemed a little goofy at first, considering her small size and young age, but truth be told, she was feeling more ready than ever.

An incident had occurred a while ago. One that put her own life at risk. Her brother, if he knew she was going right back into danger not so long after, would likely argue with her the whole night, and try to stop her, so… she simply didn’t tell him what she was doing!

Yes, she was lying, and damn it if it didn’t hurt to do that, but this was her job . She joined for the purpose of catching bad guys, and these people were bad guys. They used, hurt and kidnapped people, with seemingly no care, but still managing to be just under the radar that most government organizations wouldn’t be able to do anything against them. But Clover wasn’t in just any organization, she was in one that took things to a different level. One that utilized espers to get their information and perform their missions, and it was one where several old friends from ten years ago, from the experiments with esper children. It was almost like a community, and she was happy to participate, to be a part of it.

And despite the risks, it felt like her duty now. No, it didn’t “feel” like it, it was her duty. It was her mission, and she would do her best to fulfill that mission.

To fulfill the mission, and impress her mentor.

Alice.

Alice came into her home, dressed in a… strange outfit, a tactic she learned during her training at SOIS, about how sometimes, hiding in plain sight is not what you should strive for, but being so attention-calling that no one wants to pay attention, or even better, they underestimate you.

Usually you wouldn’t assume a woman dressed in almost nothing besides a bikini that looks like it came right out of those old Flintstones cartoons to be at all smart, and that was the image she wanted to convey, because the truth was that she was, and Alice was the smartest person she knew in her entire life. Her brain was almost a natural calculator, and it amazed Clover how someone could do something so wonderful with no struggle whatsoever.

“You remember the debriefing we had the other day, right, Clover?” Alice asks, as she sits herself down on the sofa in the living room. “We have to do this soon, and fast . We can’t give them any opportunity, because chances are, they might know we’re coming, but not when . If we’re lucky, they’ll still be unprepared by the time we strike, but if we’re not, we can still count on the fact that this is not anywhere close to being long enough to prepare many defenses anyway. Our chances are higher now than they’ve ever been.” She spoke with authority just as she always did.

It made Clover not feel worried in the slightest. The idea of invading the headquarters of a dangerous group was really freaking scary, but if Alice was there with her, and helping the whole way through? It was doable.

“Then we’ve got a game plan! Now we just need to get the details worked out, an–”

They both heard a creak, and almost immediately an anxiety washes over them.

Something is thrown in the house, and it starts to leak out gas that was quickly enveloping the room they were in.

“N-No, not again… It’s…” Clover was trying to warn Alice, but Alice likely knew what this was anyway. Soporil, in its gas form. Extremely effective at knocking people out in seconds. She tried her hardest to fight against her wobbling legs and her heavy eyelids, but there was no winning. She was falling asleep, fast, and there was nothing to be done about it.

And as both her and Alice’s consciousness started to become dormant, they would look up to see a figure walking over to them. One wearing a long robe, and a distinct gas mask.

That same gas mask from back then…

And finally, nothingness.
