Work Text:
Nile had to admit it: there was something about summer in Berlin. She enjoyed making her way through Berlin to the agreed meeting point - a park in the former DDR. Along the way, she stopped at a flea market and bought new clothes, shoes, and a delicious ice cream. She promised herself to return to the ice cream seller before leaving Berling again.
Nile found Joe sitting in the grass on a blanket and was busy with painting. Next to him was a picnic basket, and an old transistor radio was playing music.
Nile: "Hi, Joe. How are you?"
Joe looked up at Nile with a smile.
Joe: "Hi, little sister. I'm fine, and you?"
Joe got up so he could hug Nile.
Nile: "Also fine. You were right; there is something about Berlin in the summer."
Joe: "What Berlin means for you is up to you to find out."
Nile: "I already found a place that sells delicious ice cream. The best I had had since Rome."
Joe: "Speaking of Rome. Nice job with the mission."
Nile: "Thanks, and the next time you need someone to go undercover at Rome Fashion Week, think of me as the first one."
Joe: "I promise. Can I have the hard drive? Meeting up with Copley in an hour."
Nile handed Joe a neatly wrapped packet.
Nile: "A variation of an old theme. I have seen enough spy movies to know a thing or two about handing over information in a park. So, instead of a newspaper and a trench coat, I went with a packet."
Joe laughed.
Joe: "Nicky will absolutely love what you just did."
Nile: "Speaking of Nicky. Where is he? Hiding in some bushes doing sniper training?"
Joe looked at the clock.
Joe: "No, he is in plain sight. And you should see him in about ten seconds."
About ten seconds later, Nicky roller-skated by them. Nicky was wearing neon hotpants, a white tank top with a Care Bear on it, sunglasses and a cap backwards. He was in his own world because he was listening to his walkman. Nile was impressed when Nicky roller-skated backwards while blowing an air kiss to Joe without falling. Then Nicky made a pirouette before rollerskating away.
Nile: "Wow, he is beyond good."
Joe: "He had enough time to practice. And it's how he relaxes after a mission if possible. Put on his favourite outfit from the 80s before he straps on his rollerskates and puts on his walkman."
Nile: "You could call him a blast from the 80s."
Joe: "Yes, I agree."
Joe looked lovestruck after Nicky, who turned a corner.
Nile: "And those legs. I know many people who would kill for having legs like Nicky has."
Joe: "That might be, but I'm the only one who is allowed to droll over them."
Nile laughed.
Joe: "What?"
Nile: "If you can't see it, I won't tell you other than Nicky's plan is working."
Joe: "Don't know what you're talking about."
Joe got up.
Joe: "Nicky knows I'm meeting up with Copley. So, when the music ends, Nicky will come over to you, and if I'm not back at 6.15 PM, look for me."
Nile: "Got it, Old Man. It gives me plenty of time to sunbathe."
Nile pulled off her blouse and put on her sunglasses before lying down on the blanket.
Nile: "Joe, you're standing in the way of the sun."
Joe: "Remind me that one day I should tell you the tale about that time Booker decided to sunbathe. There's a lesson in that story."
Nile: "Can't wait. Oh, and when you get back, bring something cool to drink."
Joe promised, and on the way out of the park, Nicky roller-skated past him. Nicky quickly stopped up and kissed Joe before roller-skating away again. Joe looked after Nicky for a long moment, enjoying the sight of the man he loved so much, being so carefree. When Joe couldn't see Nicky anymore, he walked on with the packet.
