“Calm” was not a word most would use to describe the Owl House or its residents. “Hectic” was far more likely to be said, “chaotic” also fitting, and “a complete mess, honestly Edalyn, how do you find anything in here?” if you’re Lilith.
But the House and its residents had their moments, and after a few days weeks of chaos, anxiety, odd jobs, relearning magic, near-death experiences, and life-altering revelations, calm is exactly what they needed.
The day didn’t start calm. Breakfast was a near-deafening affair of nearly burning food and batting Hooty away while they were eating, in between debating possible glyph combos. When the last crumb was consumed, the house demon followed Luz part way to school, until he got distracted by a rogue bug and spent the better part of the morning yelling at it and various other wildlife to be his friend.
Eda spent the day sorting through the selkie gris that she hadn’t immediately sold. Both she and the Night Market vendor she had sold some to had been surprised by the sheer amount of random shit in the gris, and she called out her finds as she tossed them in various piles around the living room, heedless of how loudly the objects crashed to the floor.
Lilith, ever one to jump at a chance to research, helped King look through any and every book and scroll they could find on what hidden history may exist about his father, cross-referencing passages with the pictures she took in his tower. The process involved far more excited squealing over obscure facts, debates over who is right, and groaning over the lack of new information than most would deem necessary. Or appropriate.
Luz, the second she returned from school, was her usual whirlwind self. She updated the House on her friends and the classes she had that day, while her hands refused to still for even a moment between restocking her glyphs and starting her pile of homework. Chowing down on an afternoon snack did nothing to stop her verbal barrage, and Hooty was more than happy to pick up any projectile crumbs.
This all occurred on the main couch in the living room, the one sitting proudly under Eda’s wanted poster — which by now also boasted not only both of Luz’s banned posters from Hexside, but also Lilith’s old Emperor’s Coven flyer, no matter how much Eda protested it being hung on the Wall of Crime. Despite there being plenty of space around the room, there was just something about that day that demanded they all sit there, together.
When King started yawning, no one was surprised. He had stayed awake through no less than three of his usual naps, after all. He curled up in Eda’s lap as she pulled an anchor out of the selkie gris, proving no hindrance or bother to either of the witches or the human.
Lilith drifting off also wasn’t much of a surprise; Eda and Luz doubted she’d gotten more than a few hours of sleep a night since leaving the Emperor’s Coven. Luz gently pushed the witch until she was laying against the arm of the couch, knowing from experience how painful it is to wake up after sleeping while sitting.
Eda was surprised when Luz’s chatter began to die down, doubly so when she looked over and saw her rubbing sleep out of her blurring eyes. Eda wiped her hands on the towel she kept in her hair, then gently pulled Luz to lean on her shoulder. The teen started to protest, but decided against it and relaxed into her mentor’s arms as Eda leaned against the arm of the couch.
King woke briefly when Luz laid on him, just long enough to move to the empty spot between her and Lilith, where being crushed is less of a worry.
And that was how the Bad Girl coven stayed for most of the afternoon: a tangle of limbs on the couch, piles of abandoned projects on the table and floor in front of them. Even Eda’s snoring wasn’t enough to disturb any of them.
Hooty must have known, somehow, of their sleeping state, because he warned Willow and Gus of such in a low voice when they dropped by after what would have been dinner.
The two witchlings found the sight of such a chaotic household temporarily so... domestic, to be one that would best not be disturbed.
(But not one to not be immortalized, if the picture that Luz woke up to on her crystal ball is any indication.)
