Stormy nights

Summary:

Mango had problems sleeping at night when it was storming, but so did Purple.

Mostly just some Mango and Purple spending time together, bonding over fears in a way :]

Notes:

Hi hello, I wrote this kinda quickly when it was raining cause the thunder was freaking me out, so I projected and wrote this. Idk why, hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

Mango had never really minded stormy weather for the majority of his life.
In fact he usually found them quite peaceful, up until Gold was born. He remembers when it would start thundering late at night and he'd wake up to Gold trying to climb into arms and hide from it.

He'd wipe away Gold's fearful tears and tell he'd be okay as he carried Gold to the living room. He'd set him on the couch and go make him a cup of hot coco and read him a story until Gold would fall asleep laying against him.
Mango would either carry Gold to his bed or, if he was too tired himself, he'd get comfortable and fall asleep on the couch too.

Mango missed those days, now whenever he hears the heavy rain and thunder rumbling his heart aches just a little worst. He'd lay in bed, curled up until he either fell asleep for fatigue or laying there all night fighting tears.
He couldn't stand it tonight. It had been down pouring for hours with no end and Mango was exhausted but couldn't find the true urge to sleep.

He finally sat up, glancing at the clock on his nightstand, Four thirty am. Yep, definitely had been a while considering he got in bed at ten twenty pm.
He slowly slid out of bed, slipping his slippers on as he walked to the kitchen, maybe he could grab a drink and some melatonin.

He was in the hallway to the kitchen, he could hear the rain pounding against the window as he walked by it.
But, he noticed that the kitchen light was on, did he forget to turn it off before bed?
No, when he stepped into the kitchen he could now see Purple sitting at the kitchen table, he had a glass of water next to him.

Purple slightly turned his head to Mango as he slightly raised his hand and waved, "Hey Mango."
Mango waved back as he walked to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water before sitting down at the table, across from Purple.

"Can't sleep either?" Mango spoke softly before taking a sip of his water. Purple shrugs slightly in response, "not really, I know it's childish but, the sound of thunder still bothers me. I can't help it, it makes me all anxious and nervous. I can't understand why."

Purple crossed his arms on the table as he leans his head on them, groaning slightly. Mango calmly watches him, remember how Gold was afraid too.

"Do you, want to read? I know you're not too fond of overly sweet stuff, but want some hot chocolate or maybe tea?"
Purple perked up slightly, tilting his head up towards Mango as he listens to his offer. He thinks it about it before sitting up a bit more, nodding slightly, "yeah, that'd be nice. I'll take you up on that offer of hot coco too, please."

A small, soft smile tugged at Mango's lips as he nodded, standing up and going to one of the cabinets. He grabbed a mug and set it down on the counter before he crouched down and went into a second cabinet and grabbed a packet of coco mix.

It was almost like muscle memory as he began to softly hum.
Purple watched in awe as he easily glided around the kitchen, going to the fridge and grabbing the milk carton.

Mango easily tore open the coco mix's packet and poured it's contents into the mug. He set the now empty bag and poured in the milk, eyeballing about a cup of it.
He took a spoon from the drawer next to him as he gently stirred it while walking to the microwave.

Purple was leaning his head against his hand as he watched Mango put the mug into he microwave and hit a number on it.
Mango mumbled as he took the empty packet and tossed it into the trash can as he walked back to a cabinet. He grabbed the marshmallows before speaking up, "hope you don't mind it being microwaved and not stove top, I know they have a slightly different flavor, but none of the pots are clean-"
Mango was cut off as the microwaved beep loudly, his head snapped towards it before he turned his attention back to Purple.
"-And it's way too early for me to be doing dishes. Oh, how many 'mellow's would you like?"

He held up the marshmallows before setting them on the table. He walked to the microwave and grabbed the mug by the handle, steam wafted out of the microwave as he did so. "Hm, maybe Three?"

He set down the cup in front of Purple as he nodded, picking up the bag. "I can do it."
Mango's hand stopped unraveling the top of the bag as he blankly stared at Purple before looking back at the bag. He shook his head before holding the bag towards him, "oh, right, sorry. I'm used to Gold preferring when I'd put them in, he'd already be out in the living room with his bedtime story and waiting for me."

Purple chuckled a bit as his hand gently took hold of the bag and grabbed four marshmallows. He carefully plopped three of them in and ate the extra one. "It's okay, my mom used to do a similar thing for me.."

Purple smiled softly as he gently blew on the drink before bringing it to him lips and taking a sip. Mango walked out to their living room and picked up two books from the bookshelf, one was Sherlock and the other was some flower book Purple had been reading recently.

As Mango was searching for said flower book he could hear Purple's soft foot steps behind him.
He heard Purple set the cup down on the coffee table in front of the couch before letting himself fall backwards onto the couch.

Mango picked up the flower book and turn his attention to Purple, who was now sitting on the left side of the couch. Mango walked over and handed him the book as he sat down next to him, shifting into the couch until he was comfortable.

Purple picked up the book and opened it to where he had left off, speaking quietly and softly before he began reading, "Thank you, Pa."

Mango's eyes soften as he smiles at him and opens his own book, beginning to read, "Why of course, son." Now Purple glanced up before chuckling softly.

The two sat comfortably in the silence, only occasionally being broken when the rain got particularly heavy or when thunder rumbled. But neither of the two minded, they had someone who cared about them right by their side.
