“Just tell them, nothing’s gonna happen.”
“You don’t know that. Jesus Christ, what was I thinking-”
“Si, them of all people will understand and still love you. I mean I would hope so-”
“Not helping Sam!” Twelve-year-old Sierra snapped as she slapped her best friend, Samuel Lindstrom-Torres, on the chest.
“Kidding, kidding!” Samuel giggled as she put his hands up in defense. His tone turned serious. “But for real, this isn’t gonna change how your parents look at you. I have been around you guys for my entire life and I have never seen two parents love their child as much as they love you.”
Sierra nodded in agreement. “Yeah, I know that much, but stuff like this, I don't know where this could go.”
Samuel turned to Sierra and put both of his hands on her shoulders, which Sierra quickly swatted off.
“Don’t touch me right now,” Sierra said as she put her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around them.
Samuel nodded. “Alright, but I want you to listen to me when I say this.” Sierra nodded.
Samuel continued. “You’ve been planning this for the past couple of months, alright? And I know this could be a little scary right now and I know you feel like you need to tell them right now, but there’s no deadline, ok? You do what you know will be good for you.”
Sierra sighed as she put her head in Samuel’s lap. “It’s not that, Sam. I guess I'm just a little scared this will go worse than I think it will. I’ve already backed down from telling them this like, ten times already. Jesus fucking Christ, why am I making this such a big deal?” Sierra huffed through gritted teeth in frustration.
Samuel sighed as he patted Sierra’s head. “I don’t think you coming out to them will change their thoughts about you. I mean, if they said anything against it, which I know they won’t, it wouldn’t make any sense. I mean, do homophobic queer parents even exist?” Samuel questioned incredulously as he began to play with Sierra’s hair.
“Yes, Samuel, yes they do.” Sierra nodded.
Samuel did a double take as he stopped threading his fingers into Sierra’s curls and looked down at her. “Are you serious?”
“Yup. What a fucking life we live, am I right?” Sierra chuckled.
“Ok, besides the point, they will love you regardless of what you are.” Samuel changed the subject.
“I mean, yeah, of course, they, you know, support anyone who identifies as queer or not straight, but I feel like that even for parents that are supportive, it’s different when it’s your kid, you know?” Sierra said as she turned to lie on her back.
“Si, they’ll still see you as their daughter. Seriously, they love you more than anything. And honestly, I feel like they already know.” Samuel said the last part jokingly.
Sierra scoffed at that. “Come on, I’m like, super discreet.”
“You drooled at the sight of Esmeralda while we watched the Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Samuel pointed out.
“First of all, I did not drool-” Sierra began.
“I had to use a wipe to clean the drool from your chin.” Samuel deadpanned.
Sierra exhaled and groaned deeply as she arched her back dramatically. “Ok, well that was one ti-”
“I’m pretty sure you had an orgasm every time Katherine Pierce appeared on screen.” Samuel cut in.
Sierra sat up Jack-in-the-Box style as she gave Samuel a disgusted and incredulous look. “First of all, I never did, That’s disgusting that you would even think that, and second of all, I just thought she was hot, that’s all there is.”
“Or, what about when Aya showed up on the Originals? How did you feel?” Samuel asked.
“I wanted to be Rebekah so bad.” Sierra giggled as she remembered Rebekah kneeling before Aya.
“But seriously, just because I think fictional girls are hot doesn’t mean I’m obvious. It’s not like I also had a thing for girls early in life.” Sierra snapped out of her daze.
“You told me you had a dream about Jade West serenading you.” Samuel pointed out.
“And your point is?” Sierra said, a little annoyed that he brought that up.
“That was four years ago,” Samuel said.
“Ok, but that doesn’t prove anything.” Sierra sighed.
“Fine then, answer this for me. Who was your first crush ever?” Samuel challenged.
“Fictional or in real life, because there is a difference.” Sierra pointed out.
“Both, let’s go with both,” Samuel said, more convinced he’d have ammo against her.
“I guess the first time I liked a character more than I usually do was when we were watching Boy Meets World and I saw Angela and Shawn-”
“I fucking knew it!” Samuel whooped in victory.
“Hush it! And my first crush in real life was-” Sierra was more hesitant to say this one.
“Your first crush in real life was?” Samuel repeated.
“Look, if I tell you this, I don’t wanna hear not one peep, not one squawk, and not one wheeze out of you,” Sierra warned.
“Say it!” Samuel exclaimed.
Sierra mumbled out an answer that Samuel couldn’t understand. “What was that, honey? Speak up, I can’t hear you.”
“Your mom,” Sierra said as she covered her face with her hands.
Samuel shrugged. “If it makes you feel any better, your papi was my gay awakening.”
Sierra sighed before she said her next part. “I also had a crush on you for like three months when we were ten.”
Samuel had a surprised look on his face. “Aww, did you? That’s cute. And a little embarrassing.” Samuel chuckled.
Sierra scoffed at this. “Didn’t you have a crush on my cousin, Prince Johan? And what’s with your weird attraction to my family?”
Samuel put his hands up in defense. “Hey listen, you’re all hot. And if neither of us were gay, I would date you in an instant.”
“I’m bisexual, Sam.” Sierra corrected.
“Right, sorry about that. If I weren’t gay, I would totally date you. And if it makes you feel any better, I had a crush on you when we were six.” Samuel said as he wiggled his eyebrows.
“Oh my fucking god, Samuel,” Sierra said, muffled into her hands as she grabbed a pillow from her bed and covered her face with it.
Samuel laughed until he had a moment of realization. “Damn, Si, you have a type in girls.”
“Huh?” A perplexed Sierra responded as she slowly took the pillow off her face.
“Well, do you know what Esmeralda, Angela, Aya, Katherine Pierce, Jade West, and my mom have in common?” Samuel asked.
“What, they're all hot?” Sierra said as though it was obvious.
“I’m not gonna answer that because it’s my mom.” Samuel exhaled.
“Samuel, what do Esmeralda, Angela, Aya, Katherine Pierce, Jade West, and your mom have in common?” Sierra said, exasperated.
“They’re all pretty badass.” Samuel finally said.
“What does that have to do with anything?” Sierra rolled her eyes.
“Your type is women that are dominant. What else do you need to know?” Samuel said in an obvious tone.
Sierra thought for a while until she shrugged. “Yeah, I guess I do have a type. Like, seriously, they can run me over any day.”
“Down astronomically,” Samuel mumbled.
“What was that you said about my papi being your gay awakening? And your little crush on my cousin, who just so happens to be a prince?” Sierra rebutted.
“Wait, wait, wait a minute. Are we talking about me or you here?” Samuel spluttered out.
“Wouldn’t it be crazy if you two actually got together? That would be a great story for the children.” Sierra wondered.
“Alright, alright, be real for a second.” Samuel shoved Sierra.
Sierra chuckled as she rubbed her eyes with the tips of her fingers.
“Alright, let’s just get this over with before I explode,” Sierra said as she stood up and opened her door.
“Ladies first.” Sierra teased as she gestured Samuel out the door with her hand.
“Why thank you.” Samuel fake curtsied as she walked out the door. Sierra followed suit.
The anxiety in Sierra’s chest crept up slowly and became more apparent the closer the two kids were to the living room.
Sierra had the urge to just grab Samuel by the collar on the back of his shirt and drag him back upstairs and just hide under the covers. But Sierra knew that now would be a good time to do this.
As soon as they got downstairs, Sierra grabbed a hold of Samuel’s hand as she walked to the living room, where Sierra’s parents were cuddled up watching a movie.
“Dad, papi, can I talk to you guys about something?”
Simon and Wille looked up and they saw their daughter looking distressed and a bit scared while gripping Samuel’s hand.
“Of course, amor. Sit down.” Simon softly responded as he and Wille sat up.
Samuel squeezed Sierra’s hand, a way of telling her that she had this.
Sierra sat down on the couch next to her parents as she crossed her arms. Not in a defiant way, but as a way to protect herself.
“What is it, hjärta, are you alright?” Wille asked.
Sierra nodded. “I’ve been wanting to tell you guys this for a while and- you know what, I’m just gonna say it. I’m bisexual.”
A few seconds of silence followed as Wille and Simon processed what their daughter told them. And with each passing second, Sierra grew more anxious.
“Is that what you needed to tell us? Sierra, we want you to know that we still love you no matter who you’re interested in.” Simon said softly as he sandwiched Sierra’s hand into his hands.
“Can we ask you something, hjärta?” Wille asked.
“You already did.” Sierra slightly chuckled.
“Sierra,” Simon said a bit sternly.
“Alright, alright, ask away?” Sierra said.
“Did you think that we would find you repulsive in any way when you told us?” Wille asked.
Sierra nodded ever so slightly.
“Oh, Sierra,” Simon began as he scooted close to Sierra and hugged her. Sierra was caught a bit off guard but accepted the hug. Wille moved to Sierra’s other side and hugged her and Simon.
“Thank you so much for telling us about this. We love you so much.” Wille whispered. Sierra held on tighter.
Well, Sierra didn’t know what she was expecting, but she loved this.
“I love you guys, too.” Sierra’s muffled voice sounded. Wille and Simon just hugged her tighter.
Samuel looked on from the steps with a fond smile, but also a bit of jealousy. Oh to have a complete family that would love him unconditionally.
“See, I told you this would end well,” Samuel said as he walked into the living room.
“Shut up.” Sierra’s voice was muffled into Simon’s shoulder.
