Sweet Dreams

Summary:

Nami talks to Zoro in her bed before she gets up and leaves with the map.

Zoro wakes up to his captain suffocating him, but also the remnants of something soft on his lips, that smells strangely like citrus.

I see a lot of people writing their interpretations of the mansions scene or the bar scene but I thought Nami reading to a dying Zoro was bittersweet.

Chapter Text

Dreams

“In a certain country, in the northern seas,

there was an explorer named Mont Blanc Noland,

His stories were always grand adventures that sounded like lies.

Noland told his King he found a city of gold,

But when the king went to claim the treasure,

The city was gone,

And most of the king’s soldiers perished on the journey.”

Nami took a deep breath, choking back a sob as she glanced from the book towards the green haired swordsman, her dying… friend? Comrade?

“Noland was sentenced to death,

But he continued to lie to his king,

Insisting the city of gold sank into the sea,

And… even though nobody believed him,

He never stopped lying until he was dead.”

“Poor guy,” Nami’s eyes shot to the straw hat captain, “Can you imagine that? Losing a whole city of gold?” Luffy leaned against the door frame, a blue opened collared shirt and his signature straw hat on his head.

Nami glared at him, before looking away from him and setting her glare on the wall, her cheek clenching, “I don’t think that was the point of the story.”

Luffy stepped into the room, “Stories can have different points, I mean… Why did the king have to kill him?”

Nami stood up, eyes moving over Zoro’s body, “Sometimes, when you are in charge, you have to make the tough decisions.”

Luffy laughed, an obnoxious sound filled the room and Nami wanted to strangle him, “Why does everyone keep saying that?”

“Because you could have saved Zoro!” Nami shouted, standing and turning towards him, Luffy blinked quickly as she continued to shout, “He didn’t have to fight Mihawk but you let it happen!”

There was a pause, as Nami turned towards Zoro on her bed, gently grabbing his hand, “Why didn’t you stop him?”

“I… didn’t think he was going to lose.” Luffy whispered.

She tightened her grip on the swordsman's hand, “You could have tried to change his mind.”

“I would never do that.” Luffy countered as Nami’s eyes returned to his.

“So you’d rather see him like this?” Nami motioned to their dying friend, but Luffy stood firm.

“He might die, Luffy.”

“And I’d do anything to save him.”

The sound of fighting and crashes and people screaming filled the air outside, as Nami hid inside the Going Merry, flashbacks and traumas resurfaced as Nami clenched the map to the grand line in her hands. She turned and kneeled down next to Zoro, still lying unconscious on her bed. She wiped a piece of matted hair off his forehead, pushing it back before resting her hand on his cheek, “I told you in the bar I didn’t have any friends, but the truth is I couldn’t let myself have them. Because I always ended up hurting the people closest to me.” She leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss to the corner of his lips, before pulling away with a somber look on her face, “Goodbye Zoro, sweet dreams.”

As she stood up and walked towards the door, she took one more look at him and sent a silent prayer.

Please live. Please come back for me.
