Chapter Text

Kagamine Rin and Hatsune Miku were inseparable.

From the moment that they first met, at a bar when they were around their early 20s, it was like they had never left each other’s side since. They essentially spent all their time together.

Rin was the first person that Miku had ever met who seemed to have such little regard for the less ‘desirable’ traits that Miku possessed. She never teased her or brought them up unnecessarily, and for that Miku was thankful. Out of all her undesirable traits, the one Miku was the most conscious of, always was… personal, to say the least.

Namely, it was the fact that Miku was a vampire.

Not the villainous type of vampire, per se, but still, drinking animal blood to survive, covering up in the day, her immortality.

Ultimately, vampires are loners. Or at least that is how it should have been. Maybe Miku wishes that that’s how it would have been.

Rin was the most gorgeous, kind, funny person that Miku had ever met. She was perfect, and Miku was so utterly in love with her. Even though she shouldn’t have been.

Love between a vampire and a human was forbidden. Vampires were dangerous, and everyone knew that. Rin probably knew that too, deep down.

Not to mention Miku’s worst enemy.

Time.

Over the years, they had gone from looking like two best friends, to a mother and her daughter, to a grandmother and her granddaughter.

Even when Rin was just 30 and Miku, still appearing 20, couldn’t shake the feeling in the back of her mind that this would all be over, in a timeframe that, to her, was the equivalent of an instant.

However, no matter how much time passed, Rin was still just as stunning as the day Miku met her, and she loved her all the same.

While the face that she saw towards the end was different to the one that she fell in love with, her bright smile, her rambunctious laugh and the spark in her eyes never changed. The warmth in her hands was consistent from the day they met to the day she last held them, and Miku wouldn’t have had it any other way.

She loved her so much it hurt, but what was the use in saying anything? In telling her?

That’s what Miku always told herself, anyway.

She wasn’t allowed to love Rin, not in the way that she did, and so she kept it a secret for her entire life.

And now, Rin was dead.

Passed in her sleep at the ripe old age of 94, she had just vanished. Dissipated from the world, leaving nothing more than the most excruciating hole in Miku’s heart.

Part of her, a very selfish part of her, wished that she could have told Rin how she felt. Maybe it would have been different. Maybe she would have understood. Maybe she would have felt the same.

She knew that it couldn’t have been different, and that Rin would never feel the same for her. She was a vampire. Her love was destined to be unrequited.

Another part of Miku wished to forget everything. Forget she ever opened her heart and gave a shit about another person, to the point where they infiltrated all her thoughts, all the time. She wished to forget that she was too scared to tell the most important person in her life that there was no way in the world that she could live without her.

And now she has to live without her.

Even if she did forget it all, about everything that the two of them had ever been through, she knew that that would just hurt her even more. They had a connection, a bond so strong, Miku she knew that even though she was gone, somewhere out there, Rin was still thinking about her, hoping Miku never stops doing the same.

She loved, and she lost. God, she lost.

Love absolutely fucking sucked.

She not only lost the love of her life, but also her best friend. The one person who she could talk to about anything. The one person she would distract from thunderstorms by pulling out a deck of cards. The one person who would tell her all about the latest cheating scandal at her work. The one person who would drop every obligation she had to drive to her house and cheer her up when something shitty happened.

Fuck, Rin was so irreplaceable. She meant more than life itself, and Miku hated herself for not telling her that before it was over.

She had to soldier on. Even if she wished death would claim her, like it had her dearest, she had no choice but to set aside her grief and continue living until Rin became but a distant memory, and maybe even dissipated from her mind altogether.

And on and on she soldiered, until the sun burnt out, and world turned to dust.

Miku never forgot.
